HMIs for on- and offshore applications.

Stahl HMI Systems presents the latest generation of Panel PCs, specially designed for applications in the oil and gas industry. ATEX- and IECEx- certified, the new, powerful ET-498 and MT-498 series Panel PCs can be used in Zone 1, 21 and 2, 22 hazardous areas.

The new units are ideally suited for operating and monitoring operations around the rig floor, such as mud logging, MWD/LWD, rig instrumentation, or well stimulation. Optimised for onshore and offshore applications, they are extremely rugged with enhanced shock and vibration resistance. The powder-coated aluminium enclosures are IP66-rated and seawater-proof. With integrated heating, the Panel PCs ensure reliable operation even at extreme temperatures of -40 °C / -40 °F.

For outdoor applications, the 21.5" capacitive multi-touch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD) is also available with a special anti-reflective coating. As an option, both HMIs types can be powered by top-of-the-range Intel Core i7 processors. The two junction boxes house multiple explosion-proof ports for increased flexibility and connection versatility. A second redundant Ethernet port, or an intrinsically safe Wi-Fi module certified according to the wireless LAN standards 802.11a/b/g/n are optionally available. To enable VoIP video conferencing, the Panel PCs can be configured with video camera and Bluetooth interfaces. Barcode scanner or RFID card reader interfaces are available for secure user authentication. A variety of mounting solutions for fixed or mobile applications on rig floors, in control rooms or containers complete the product offering.

Takeover marked in visit to Ireland

Representatives of both R. Stahl and Clifford & Snell recently visited their Ireland agents Douglas Controls & Automation in Cork, the capital of Ireland's southern province

Stewart Birell,Stahl's Regional Sales Manager, Declan Lordan Douglas Control & Automation,  Chris Manville   Account Manager UK, Ireland, Scandanavia & Benelux, Clifford & Snell and Eugene Pigott Douglas Control & Automation
R. STAHL and Digital Angel Corp signed a contract earlier this year  on the takeover of British business Clifford & Snell by R. STAHL group. Clifford & Snell is a specialist for signalling devices for explosion-protected and industrial use. Their product program excellently supplements Stahl's product line for signalling devices. Digital Angel, whose core business is RFID technologies, had been looking for a partner for this unit who is able to further expand the sustainable business.

Clifford & Snell develops and produces optical, acoustic and combined signalling devices. In regard to combination of signalling devices (horns and signal lamps) Clifford & Snell has a unique market position. The products in explosion-protected design are used in R. STAHL's traditional markets (oil & gas, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc.). The products in industrial design are required, among others, in industrial buildings, hospitals, airports, schools or on ships.

With the completion of the product portfolio in signalling devices the expert in explosion protection can realize significant increase in sales in this segment. In the medium-term R. STAHL plans to double sales in the segment for signal lamps with the takeover of Clifford & Snell, in the long-term even a triplication of sales is anticipated. Currently Clifford & Snell generates annual sales amounting to about € 4.3 million.

Besides products that have a performance and quality level comparable to R. STAHL products, the new partner makes contributions in regard to development know-how and sales structures. The present Managing Director, Trevor Gage, will in future manage business unit signalling devices in the R. STAHL group; he has extensive professional expertise.

"With Clifford & Snell we move to position 2 in Europe in the field of signalling devices. By combining the excellent competences in development and sales with our value creation and sales structure we will be able to grow disproportionately in the field of signalling devices ", says Martin Schomaker, CEO of R. STAHL.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the business and to be affiliated with the internationally respected R. STAHL group, will enable us to accelerate our product development program and advance Clifford & Snell's worldwide sales and marketing effort", says Trevor Gage, Managing Director of Clifford & Snell.

CCTV package solution for hazardous areas

Declan Lordan of Douglas C&S (IRL) tells us that STAHL has compiled a scaleable package of cameras and recording system for camera surveillance in hazardous areas on gas and oil rigs.

In addition to making operations safer, it enables users to carry out a thorough study of causes and fix any problems in the case of incidents. The system supports both live monitoring at HMI stations as well as complete documentation of events: The standard package includes four cameras whose video signals can be recorded manipulation-proof for up to ten days.

This network-compliant solution which also permits authorised remote access to images via the internet can, if necessary, be easily expanded to include twice or four times as many cameras. The recording capacity, which as a standard is covered by a 500 GB hard disk, can be easily expanded to meet a specific application's requirements. Resolutions of up to 4 CIF as well as a full PAL format with 704 x 576 pixels can be selected for the H.264 compressed digital video files. A PTZ control module is available for the remote control of the pan/tilt/zoom functions of the cameras.

The standard package includes four spherical cameras type EC-710 for zones 1 and 2, which can also withstand the extremely rough ambient conditions on offshore platforms in extreme climates. Their steel housing can withstand aggressive chemical substances and protects the cameras from substantial mechanical stress. It can be installed in ambient temperatures ranging from -30 °C to +75 °C. A heater is used to prevent condensation or frost forming on the surface.

With a diameter of only 55 mm and a mere 435 grams, the cameras can be fitted even into the smallest of spaces. The fixed viewing angle of the hardened lens is +/- 90° horizontally and 68° vertically. In addition to the EC-710 and other camera types, video server and recording technology, different HMI stations for local surveillance and suitable software solutions, R. STAHL can also provide any peripherals as part of the system solution. A broad range of cables, switches, explosion-proof terminal boxes as well as additional input devices such as keyboard or joystick for remotely controllable camera models are available
