Digitising in the field.

KROHNE made Ethernet-APL demo devices available to selected customers at the end of last year (2023). This step marks an important milestone in the company's own Ethernet APL development project for various sensor types.

Ethernet-APL technology is a revolution in the process industry: for the first time, a high data rate (10 Mbit/s) is combined with intrinsic safety for the field level. In addition, the technology enables a two-wire operation including power supply. KROHNE was a founding member of the Ethernet-APL consortium in 2018 and has thus actively promoted the technical design of the standard.

Customer interest in Ethernet-APL has been growing steadily for several years, particularly in the chemical industry, but also beyond.

"With Ethernet-APL, we are fully digitalizing the field level," explained Dr Christoph Spiegel, Head of Strategic Product Management in the Electronics Division at KROHNE. "Our demonstrators already have most of the functions that are possible with this technology. They provide the implementation of PROFINET according to the PA (Process Automation) profile 4.0 with generic or alternatively manufacturer-specific GSD file. There is also an FDI package for use with all modern asset management systems and an integrated web server with a convenient user interface for simple commissioning and diagnostics."

“We hope that we can obtain early feedback and test results via the demonstrators, including interoperability test results with various host systems," he continued. "We want to strengthen our customers' trust in KROHNE as a reliable partner that brings the latest technology into practice at an early stage. Ethernet-APL is still a very young technology, which is why we are working particularly closely with users here. Looking at the progress of the project, I am confident that KROHNE will be able to present the first Ethernet-APL devices by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024."

Electronic DP cell.

Krohne has added an electronic differential pressure (eDP) version to the OPTIBAR family, the OPTIBAR 5060 eDP. It aims at level, density and differential pressure applications within closed vessels as well as density compensated level measurement in open tanks.

Compared to classic DP installations with diaphragm seal and capillaries, OPTIBAR 5060 eDP provides a cost-efficient connection to and installation on the vessel: it requires smaller process connections, and the connection between taps is realised via an electronic signal cable instead of oil filled capillaries. The instrument starts from G½ process connections, and allows for a maximum distance of up to 25 m / 75 ft between top and bottom tap. Thus, cost and installation as well as maintenance time can be saved, especially with tall vessels that would require long capillaries.

For the eDP version, many of the features of the regular OPTIBAR 5060 series are available, e.g. optional Bluetooth communication via smartphone or tablet (with OPTICHECK Pressure Mobile app). It can be configured with metallic or ceramic process diaphragms, a wide range of (hygienic) process connections, various communication options up to FF and Profibus-PA, and housing materials from plastic to stainless steel.

It also features an integrated static pressure measurement for additional process information. It comes with various industry-specific approvals and is SIL 2/3 certified, with the possibility of remote activation of SIL mode via display, DTM or Bluetooth.

About eDP measurement: eDP is based on two discrete gauge pressure transmitters, which are mounted in the same way as a classical differential pressure transmitters on the vessel. One transmitter, usually at the bottom of the vessel, acts as the primary sensor to measure the gauge pressure in the tank. The secondary transmitter measures the gas pressure at the vessel top, and is electronically connected to the primary transmitter via a signal cable, providing fast and synchronous measurement. The primary sensor then calculates the pressure difference between both. The limits of eDP measurement are at higher gas pressures, for which classical DP transmitters such as OPTIBAR DP 7060 or OPTIBAR DP 3050 are most suitable.

Biogas flowmeter.

Krohne has updated the OPTISONIC 7300 Biogas ultrasonic flowmeter for the measurement of dry and wet (raw) biogas with variable composition. Besides the standard temperature sensor, it now features a pressure sensor that can be ordered optionally with the flowmeter and comes mounted on the flow tube.

In combination with the integrated flow computer, the additional sensor provide for advanced biogas measurement: since the methane content of biogas may vary, it may be required for the operation of the biogas facility to know the exact methane content in a methane/ CO2 mixture, e.g. when the gas is used as fuel for gas engines in a CHP unit. Here, a temperature sensor in combination with the measured velocity of sound enables direct measurement of methane content via calculation of the molar mass. By using an additional pressure sensor, OPTISONIC 7300 Biogas can also provide calculation of gas flow volume to standard conditions.

For optimal integration, all devices are offered from the own product range: for applications 0…100°C, Krohne offers an OPTITEMP TRA-P10 Pt100 sensor with OPTITEMP TT22 C (Ex-i) or an Ex-d temperature sensor with OPTITEMP TT30 C transmitter. The optional pressure sensor is an OPTIBAR P1010 (Ex-i) with 0…1.6 bara range. OPTISONIC 7300 Biogas is available in line sizes DN50, 80, 100, 150, 200 / 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8".

Monitoring ship carbon emissions.

Krohne Marine has introduced a new version of EcoMATE: the software system for fuel consumption monitoring now also includes monitoring and reporting of carbon emissions for ships. It enables crews, operators and fleet owners to monitor all vessel types with a single integrated software tool that provides automatic calculation and reporting of emission and efficiency data.

EcoMATE is compliant with the European Union (EU) regulation 2015/757 on the monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transport (EU MRV) and the global International Maritime Organization Data Collection System for fuel oil consumption on ships (IMO DCS), both aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

EcoMATE consists of four modules: fuel consumption monitoring, bunkering verification, EU MRV & IMO DCS emission reporting, and a Cloud module. The fuel consumption module provides for continuous measurement and monitoring of all fuel types consumed on board. Readings from (Coriolis mass) flowmeters mounted in supply and return lines of engines are consolidated, visualized and stored in the control room to monitor current and total usage of fuels, for example to validate efficiency.

The bunkering module provides for monitoring, verification and logging of fuel quantities received through the bunkering line: EcoMATE visualizes readings from an inline flowmeter as trend graphs during the bunkering process, e.g. mass flow or (compensated) volume flow rate, density and temperature. While all relevant data is logged and stored, reports showing total quantities of fuel types received together with verification of density can be printed or sent digital to a shore station.

The EcoMATE EU MRV & IMO DCS module helps crew, owners and operators to generate emission reports compliant to these regulations. It also incorporates a set of features easing daily operation and reporting requirements per voyage or per vessel.

The EcoMATE Cloud is a centralized web reporting tool for vessels running the EcoMATE system: data from the other three modules is automatically transmitted to a cloud where it can be viewed, downloaded or analysed via a dashboard that is accessible through any web browser. For example, trends of fuel consumption or emission in correlation with temperature, speed and/or kilowatt thrust per vessel can be shown. Vessels can be compared for the same voyage sailed months apart, and measured data from each vessel down to individual fuel consumer level can easily be analysed.

To suit different ship types, Krohne Marine offers an extended scope of supply for EcoMATE, including workstations, flowmeters, valves, supporting equipment and services depending on the installation.

Optical turbidity measurement.

The new OPTISYS TUR 1060 optical turbidity measuring system has been introduced by Krohne. The main application areas are quality monitoring or filter monitoring in drinking water, or in cooling water circuits or demineralisation processes.

The new analytical system employs 90° scattered light technology and is compliant to US EPA 180.1 and EN ISO 7027. It comes with 4…20mA and Modbus RS485 communication and features improved usability, fast measuring response time, simple and cost-efficient calibration, data logging, and low maintenance requirements.

Although OPTISYS TUR 1060 shares components with its predecessor OPTISYS TUR 1050 and can be retrofitted, the system has been completely redesigned: it provides improved usability due to cursor keys and simple start-up and operation without special knowledge. For flexible use, the measuring ranges can be adapted according to the application. It can be calibrated with reusable calibration cuvettes in less than 5 minutes, without dangerous formazine contact.

The new system has an integrated data logger for storing measurement readings and the last four calibrations up to one year, depending on selected logging interval between 1…60 minutes. Calibration data and logged data can both be downloaded via USB interface. OPTISYS TUR 1060 has the lowest maintenance requirements on the market due to a long lasting light source and automatic ultrasonic cleaning of the measuring cuvette that provides for minimal wear, high long-term stability and short downtimes.

EGM on Coriolis mass flowmeters.

Entrained Gas Management EGM technology is now available for all Krohne OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters. With the latest additions OPTIMASS 3400 and OPTIMASS 7400, now the whole OPTIMASS series offers continuous and repeatable mass flow or density measurement with 2-phase flows such as liquids mixed with gas, slurries with gases or highly viscous fluids with gas entrainments.

In the past, this presented a huge challenge for mass flowmeters: without gas entrainments, the measuring tubes in the Coriolis mass flowmeter have the desired regular oscillation. Gas entrained in the liquid dampens this regular oscillation, and as the gas content increases, it can come to a complete stop. To overcome this, Krohne developed powerful control algorithms that allow the meter to maintain oscillation and continue to measure even with complex flow conditions. This is possible even during a complete transition from a pure liquid phase to a gas phase and back, i.e. from 0…100% gas content. Mass flow and density measurements remain stable, continuous and repeatable.

Since the introduction of the EGM technology in 2012, OPTIMASS flowmeters with EGM have proven themselves in 2-phase flow and batch/loading/empty-full-empty applications in various industries:

  • Food & Beverage: raw milk, ice cream, dough, sirup, tomato concentrate, spinach, meat, margarine, mayonnaise, meat, syrup, coffee extract, coolants, sugar concentrates and molasses
  • Chemical: hydrogen peroxide processing, viscous monomers/polymers, liquid removal from stirred tanks, highly concentrated assets such as fuming HCl or HNO3, polyurethane foams, push to empty tanks
  • Oil & Gas: drilling fluids, truck loading/offloading, well heads, tank management

Together with the indication or configurable alarm for the user, EGM can also be used to improve processes by identifying transient gas entrainments.
To explain the technology and the applications in more detail, “Entrained Gas Management in Coriolis flowmeters” has been released as new course on the free Krohne Academy online eLearning platform. The course consists of one learning module with a corresponding test that allows participants to assess their knowledge, and is currently available in English and German, other languages will follow.

Smart conductivity measurement in liquids.

Extending its portfolio of process analysis sensors and systems, Krohne introduces three new SMARTPAT sensors for conductive conductivity measurement in liquids: SMARTPAT COND 1200, 3200 and 5200.

Introduced in 2013, SMARTPAT is a series of digital 2-wire loop powered sensors with integrated transmitter technology. Using a VP cable, any SMARTPAT sensor can be connected directly to the process control system via 4…20 mA/HART 7 interface. This offers advantages in both handling and costs of a measuring point. An additional transmitter on site is no longer necessary, SMARTPAT sensors can be configured and calibrated offline via PACTware FDT/DTM, on site with a HART handheld or an optional loop powered operating unit.

Targeted at the water and wastewater industries, the application area for SMARTPAT COND 1200 (measuring range for cell constant c=1: 100 µS/cm…20 mS/cm) ranges from process monitoring/control in water treatment plants (industrial and drinking water), water quality/limit values monitoring, to filter monitoring.

SMARTPAT COND 3200 (measuring range for cell constants c=0.1: 1…1000 µS/cm, c=0.01: 0.05…10 µS/cm) is aimed at quality measurement in condensate, cooling water, boiler feed water in power plants. Also, it can be used for reverse osmosis, monitoring of ion exchanger, deionization or desalination processes, e.g. in semiconductor production.

SMARTPAT COND 5200 (measuring range for cell constant c=1: 10 µS/cm…15 mS/cm) is designed for use e.g. in separation processes (caustic solution / water) or process monitoring in water or wastewater treatment in chemical, petrochemical as well as in water and wastewater industries.

Each SMARTPAT sensor is specifically designed for its area of application: approvals and certificates range from installation in hazardous areas up to zone 0 to hygienic areas. Along with the sensor family, Krohne offers a large portfolio of accessories, including loop powered indicators, USB interface cable, junction box, operating unit, standard solutions, sensor cables and mounting assemblies.

Cheers! Sparkling flow!

Over recent years wine has become increasingly popular in Britain and it seems fair to say that its image has changed significantly over this time. It has largely lost its elitist image and has emerged as an alcoholic beverage that is enjoyed by a large number of the population. A trip to the local supermarket or high street retailer will present the shopper with a wide choice of wines from all over the world, but do we really need to look so far afield to enjoy a glass of wine? It comes as a surprise to many, but award winning wine is produced in Britain.

A great alternative to
Rosé  Prosecco,
but really very English.
Based in Tenterden in Kent (GB), the award winning Chapel Down winery produces truly world-class Traditional Method sparkling wines and a range of still wines, as well as premium beer and cider. They boast some of the best winemaking facilities in England and were recently looking for a portable measurement device that could provide accurate measurement and volume monitoring of juice and wine during transfer operations.

After careful consideration, they decided to have a portable device manufactured that incorporated Krohne's OPTIFLUX 2100 electromagnetic flowmeter. The device consists of an OPTIFLUX 2100 attached to an inlet and outlet pipe and mounted on wheels. The device can then be easily moved around the winery to perform accurate measurement wherever it is required. The inlet pipe is attached to a tank and the medium is then pumped through it at a flowrate of 5-10,000 l/hr. It passes through the electromagnetic flowmeter and then via the outlet pipe into another vessel. The OPTIFLUX 2100 accurately measures the volume of the medium and once the desired quantity has been reached the pump is switched off.

Previously Chapel Down used sight glasses running down the side of the tank, which was labour intensive. By automating the process using KROHNE’s OPTIFLUX 2100 they now have consistently accurate measurement and instead of two people being required to carry out the transfer operation, the process can be carried out by one person alone.

Josh Donaghay-Spire, winemaker at Chapel Down comments, “We were keen to automate the transfer process, however we needed a flowmeter that could cope with dissolved CO2 as this makes the more traditional flowmeters ineffective.” He continues, "we were aware that KROHNE had previous experience with a similar application and that their OPTIFLUX 2100 could easily cope with the process conditions whilst providing accurate and reliable measurement. We can now not only make more efficient use of manpower but we can also calibrate certain tanks which previously didn’t have calibration charts.”

4…20mA output for VA flowmeters!

With the new option "WIM", a 4...20mA electrical output signal is now available for the Krohne variable area flowmeter VA40. While the flow rate with these glass devices could previously be read only locally, the 4...20mA output option allows for transmission of the measured value for control or evaluation purposes.

With VA40 WIM version, the height of the float is converted into an electrical signal via a Hall sensor chain. This signal can be used for a PLC/DCS, or to record the measured value over a certain period with a data logger. Along with each VA40 WIM, KROHNE supplies the calibration curve, allowing the customer to assign the exact flow value to any current value.

VA40 variable area flowmeters are used for the volume flow measurement of liquids or gases. The glass measuring tube enables visual inspection of the medium to evaluate properties such as gas entrainments or colouring. Typical applications include measurement of flushing, purging or inerting gases, heating and cooling circuits, gas measurement in industrial furnaces, or other basic applications in machine building and process industries, where this purely mechanical measuring principle has proven itself for almost 100 years.

All connection variants of the VA40 are also available with the WIM option. With the robust stainless steel taps, the maintenance-free device is mounted directly into the pipeline using flange, screw, clamp or hose connections. An installation in hazardous areas according to ATEX II2G Ex ia IIC T6 Gb and ATEX II2D Ex ia IIIC T85°C Db is possible. Retrofitting the WIM option to existing devices is not possible.
