Measuring sustainability or re-imagining imaging.

Winners announced from record number of startups worked to a high standard focusing on either Measuring Sustainability or Re-imagining Imaging. 

The winners in this year’s ABB Analytical Measurement Startup Challenge have been announced at an awards ceremony in Ottar, Sweden where 14 finalists from five continents pitched their digital innovations in the fields of measurement and imaging to a panel of judges.

The winner in the Measure Sustainability category was Global Sustainable Enterprise System (GSES), while Unleash Live took the crown in the Re-imagine Imaging category. Each will be awarded a collaboration project with ABB Measurement worth $30,000, with the goal of fast-tracking their solution and launching them to customers through the ABB Ability Marketplace^* in over 100 countries within the year. Winners will also receive mentoring support from SynerLeap (ABB’s startups accelerator) and Microsoft’s startup advisors.

The aim of this challenge was to drive the next level of insights from emission monitoring systems, providing ABB’s customers with more holistic, value-added information on their sustainability footprint. 

Global Sustainable Energy Systems (GSES), the winner in this category, was founded in The Netherlands in 2019. ABB is looking forward to working with the 14-strong GSES team over the next few months to further refine and develop its innovative approach to measuring, verifying and rating the sustainability performance of products and organisations.

Re-imagine Imaging.
The second challenge was about using digital imaging to complement ABB’s analyzer portfolio, providing customers with deeper insights, and improving safety, productivity and sustainability. 

The winner in this category is Unleash live, which was founded in Australia in 2016 and now has 28 employees. ABB is excited by the potential for Unleash live’s video analytics innovation to drive down costs, improve productivity, accuracy and safety for its clients.

Avoiding catastrophic failures in industrial facilities.

Experts in the energy sector have devised a new solution to prevent cracks in plant equipment before they develop.

IMI Critical Engineering, has launched IMI Insyt, a new digital service to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency in industrial plants. This is a digitally based prescriptive engineering service that can prevent structural integrity issues such as cracks and leaks in pipes and equipment. It works to protect industrial processes by optimizing plant operations and minimizes costly and unexpected plant downtime.

The energy industry has changed dramatically since the introduction of renewable energy sources. Historically, industrial and manufacturing plants were designed for continuous, 24-hour operation. The increasing use of renewable energy means that plants are more likely to be stopped and restarted to help supplement the supply of renewable power.

These increased startups and shutdowns can create serious issues within plants. The pipes and valves can crack during the attemperation process (Referring to the control of the required temperature of superheated or reheated steam by water spray injection.), which can cause plant shutdowns, costly repairs, a loss in revenue, and unsafe working conditions.

To combat these problems, IMI Insyt employs system-wide, physics-based analysis. Carried out by highly experienced IMI engineering experts, the service identifies improvements required for de-superheating performance and system control. It can analyze steam flow, spray-water profiling, and thermal cycling.

The data-driven analytics used by IMI Insyt identifies operational problems, design faults, and inadequate maintenance. By rectifying these issues, plants can improve plant safety and performance before any catastrophic failures occur.

The system is cloud-based and can be initiated remotely as well as on-site. Several customers in North America have already tried and tested this service which has helped them to stop cracks occurring in pipes and avoid costly repairs or plant shutdowns. At a Combined Cycle Power Plant, the Insyt team captured and analyzed the data to quickly identify the major issues requiring immediate attention in the plant.

Dream Report 5.0 is a major release from Ocean Data Systems (ODS). It delivers significant enhancements over typical maintenance releases. The most significant enhancement is the incorporation of an additional dashboard technology, tailored for use in front office applications (business analytics, database connectivity and dynamic filtering). This new dashboard also offers access to the wide range of Dream Report analytics and data sources.

Whereas Dream Report was viewed as an Industrial solution in the past, today, through this optional interface, it delivers both industrial and business analytics to satisfy all plant operations and management personnel. A variety of IT solutions have been available for business analytics and dashboards. Now, there is one solution to satisfy BOTH business and industrial analytics requirements.

Additional enhancements include “Internet of Things” connectivity (IOT, IIOT, Industry 4.0, Industrie 4.0) through a new MQTT / JSON interface, analytics sharing with other automation solutions through an OPC DA Server, XML output data formats for data transfer with automated systems, and much more.

Visual analytics application upgraded!

The 7th release of Seeq software in just the past 18 months has been announced. This has been driven by input from customers expanding their use of the Seeq visual analytics application for engineers and scientists in process manufacturing organisations. It enables them to rapidly wrangle, investigate, and share insights on production data. Target markets include oil & gas, pharmaceutical, chemical, energy, mining, food and beverage, and other process industries.
