Accreditation for calibration laboratory.

LotusWorks Management has recently extended the scope of the ISO 17025 accreditation in the laboratory and onsite at our customer facilities in order to further improve service to customers.
The scope extension included increasing Temperature Calibration from -100˚C to 660˚C, Scales Calibration up to 320Kg and adding Temperature mapping of controlled environments from -90 to 140˚C.
Members of the LotusWorks Calibrations & EHSQ Department along with the SGS Surveillance Auditors.
LotusWorks achieved this by investing in extra test equipment and spending more time bringing procedures, training and capabilities up to the IS0 17025 standard. The Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) reviewed the scope extension during the recent surveillance audit and the team was delighted when it approved all of the exertions and additions to the 17025 scope.

The extensions came as a result of a management review by LotusWorks, which was carried out in early 2015. They deliver a more comprehensive accredited service to customers and are proof of LotusWorks’ culture to continuously seek ways to improve services offered to customers.
Well done to all laboratory staff who played a significant part in getting the scope extended.

Accredited Calibrations for CO2.

The Austrian sensor specialist E+E Elektronik offers now accredited calibrations also for CO2-fraction in gas. The E+E calibration laboratory is accredited by Akkreditierung Austria according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 and is the only facility in Austria which can carry out CO2 calibrations at this high level.

The E+E calibration laboratory offers accredited CO2 calibrations for gas concentrations in the range 5 … 300,000 ppm (μmol/mol), as well as for the equivalent volume fraction in μL/L. Due to the wide calibration range it is possible to calibrate all common CO2 measuring devices such as sensors, handhelds, data loggers and spectrometers.

The calibration is performed as comparative measurement with a constant CO2 reference concentration. The CO2 reference concentration is generated by a special gas mixing pump according to DIN 51898-1_2015-05 and is freely selectable. The piston pump works with four high-precision pistons. The gas volume flow is precisely defined by the diameter of the cylinder, the stroke and the frequency, and can therefore be traced back to length, which is a fundamental physical quantity of the International System of Units (SI).

According to the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) agreements, only calibration laboratories accredited according to EN ISO/IEC 17025 can ensure the traceability of measurement results to SI and full international comparability. The accredited calibration certificate states the measurement uncertainty associated to the specific calibration process.

Accredited CO2 calibration certificates are generally required for measuring devices used for safety or for the control of key manufacturing processes. Accredited CO2 calibrations are of interest for instance in the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) regulated industries such as food and pharmaceutical. Reliable CO2 monitoring and control is paramount for biological incubators. In building automation, the accuracy of CO2 measuring devices impacts directly on the efficiency of demand controlled ventilation systems.

In addition to CO2, the calibration laboratory of E+E Elektronik GmbH is accredited for humidity, dew point, temperature, pressure, air velocity and mass flow by Akkreditierung Austria / Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 with identification number 0608.

• E+E products are marketed in Ireland by Instrument Technology.

Cybersecurity accreditation in Germany.

Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS), the accreditation body for certification bodies in Germany, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the ISA Security Compliance Insititue (ISCI) to provide accreditation for Germany-based ISCI ISASecure certification bodies.

All conformity assessment bodies (CB) for the ISCI ISASecure® industrial automation and control systems (IACS) conformity assessment (CA) scheme must meet ISO/IEC 17065 and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in addition to the ISASecure requirements for technical readiness.

The ISASecure CBs are independently assessed by ISO/IEC 17011 (EN 45011) accreditation bodies (AB) for initial accreditation and are audited annually by the AB to ensure that the CB maintains qualifications for participation in the ISASecure CA scheme.

“Establishing the ISASecure IACS certification as an ISO/IEC 17065 conformance scheme ensures that the accredited CBs providing ISASecure certifications are qualified for assessing complex industrial control systems, are credible, and have no conflicts of interest,” stated Andre Ristaino, ISCI managing director. “In addition, through the EA, ILAC, and IAF multilateral recognition arrangements among the accredited CBs, the ISASecure certificates of conformance are formally recognized by signatory labs in jurisdictions around the globe.”

The ISASecure CA scheme is a standards-based certification that assesses the cybersecurity of IACS products and systems to the IEC 62443 international standards governing control systems cybersecurity.

Unique accreditation for European lab.

Yokogawa’s European Calibration Laboratory has become the world’s first non-governmental facility to receive full ISO17025 Accreditation for power measurements at up to 100 kHz. This is in addition to its established capability for providing high-accuracy calibration at 50 Hz, especially at very low power factors (down to 0.0001) and at high currents.
There is a growing demand to remove uncertainty in power measurements, particularly with the growing focus on renewable energy markets and the need to optimise energy efficiency while complying with international standards on power quality, especially at low power factors. In addition, the inverters used in renewable energy systems are switching at higher speeds: a scenario that introduces harmonics at higher frequencies.

There is also a demand for high-frequency power measurements on devices such as switch-mode power supplies, electronic lighting ballasts, soft starters in motor controls and frequency converters in traction applications. As a result, power calibration at 50 Hz is no longer sufficient, and accredited power calibration at up to 100 kHz is necessary to address these markets.

“The recognition offered by ISO17025 accreditation is objective proof that the knowledge of our personnel and the quality of our instruments are at a world-class level”, says Terry Marrinan, Yokogawa’s Vice President, Test & Measurement, for Europe & Africa: “For customers working with tight tolerances, ISO 17025 accredited calibration of the measurement is vital to major critical measuring projects and provides the high level of quality assurance that our customers need.”

Obtaining this accreditation for the laboratory, based at the company’s European Headquarters in Amersfoort (NL), is a key part of Yokogawa’s strategy to maintain and grow its market-leading position in the European digital power analyser market.

Engineers need to be sure the measurements they make are correct to meet the exacting requirements of modern design. Their power meters need to be calibrated at the frequencies present in their specific application and not just at 50 Hz. However good the calibration result at 50 Hz, it does not say anything about high-frequency performance.

Frequency is just one factor being addressed by Yokogawa in the calibration of power meters. Whereas in the past it was sufficient merely to list voltage and current measurements in a power meter’s data sheet, today’s power environment needs to address variables such as phase shift, power factor and the effects of distorted waveforms: all factors that are included in Yokogawa’s instrument specifications.

In fact, without high-quality in-house calibration facilities, most other power instrument manufacturers cannot provide the sort of evidence that is available to Yokogawa to show that their instruments perform within their specifications. Yokogawa’s recently introduced WT3000E, for example, can be confirmed as the most accurate power analyser in the world because of its accreditation certificate.

The Calibration Laboratory’s accreditation will provide Yokogawa with an essential development tool for the future, ensuring that new products will have undergone the most rigorous compliance testing and certification before release. Yokogawa’s customers can also be totally confident that they also have easy access to accredited traceable power calibration for all their needs, avoiding time-consuming submission to national standards laboratories.

“The fact that the European Standards laboratory can offer up to 100 kHz of accredited traceable power calibration puts us in a unique position in the market, and ISO 17025 accreditation is the recognised international standard which enables us to justify these claims”, confirms Terry Marrinan: “The ability to both offer accredited calibration and to be able to explain its relevance - particularly at higher frequencies - demonstrates that Yokogawa are the experts in power measurement and that Yokogawa power meters are truly the most accurate in the world.”

In addition to wideband and high accurate power-meter calibration systems, the state-of-the-art calibration laboratory also includes systems for calibrating oscilloscopes, recorders and optical products, and is therefore capable of calibrating a wide range of instruments in the test & measurement industry.

US calibration facility receives accreditation!

Yokogawa Corporation of America has announced that its Newnan (GA USA) facility’s Calibration Laboratory has been awarded ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA). The A2LA Certificate No. 3474.01 was issued on November 26, 2013. The Yokogawa Calibration Laboratory also meets the requirements of ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006 and holds ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard provides an internationally recognized basis for laboratory accreditation. The standard is used to govern a laboratory's quality management system (auditing and corrective action procedures) and requires adherence to rigorous technical requirements.

Specifically, the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard dictates that a laboratory maintain testing facilities and equipment to a specified standard, adhere to documented protocol, train employees to proper competence levels, validate proper methodology, follow industry standard mathematical methods for calculating uncertainty, confirm that test equipment meets necessary criteria and that all equipment used for accredited calibrations is also, in fact, ISO 17025 calibrated. This equipment must also be calibrated to and traceable to independently maintained national or international standards. An ISO 17025 calibration will always provide both ‘as found’ and ‘as left’ performance test data in an approved report format.

Today, the ISO 17025 is the single-most important standard for test and measurement products. It is the global standard for the technical competence of calibration and test laboratories.

Across today’s industries, manufacturers who use test equipment are seeking ISO 17025 calibrations for the added assurance that both the products they purchase as well as those that they produce will meet specifications.

"When a customer sends in a unit to calibrate, they can be sure that the calibration has been performed by proven processes, and their unit has been managed by streamlined and repeatable methods," said Aytac Yaraneri, Yokogawa's Laboratory Process Manager.

Yokogawa’s calibration facility is used to calibrate a wide range of test equipment, including the WT3000 & PZ4000 power meter line, the DL850 ScopeCorder, and other digital oscilloscopes, each of which is used within numerous industries by a wide customer base within North America.

Certification for IEC 61850 driver

COPA-DATA has received another accreditation for its zenon hmi/SCADA software: the zenon Client Driver, developed in-house to meet the IEC 61850 energy technology standard, has been certified by KEMA.

Tested Interoperability
In order for an automation system such as zenon to be able to communicate with different protocols and standards when being used in substation systems, users need a corresponding driver. For this reason, the COPA-DATA development team developed the zenon IEC 61850 Client Driver in 2006 to enable the exchange of data using the international standard IEC 61850. After comprehensive tests, the zenon Client Driver has now been certified by the international testing and certification company KEMA. This certification confirms smooth communication with this standard and seamless interoperability with all available servers within a zenon substation project.

Certification ensures competitive advantage
Jürgen Resch, Energy Industry Manager at COPA-DATA, stresses the importance of this certification: “The zenon IEC 61850 Client Driver has already been successfully integrated into energy projects. However, the certification of the driver is now often required in tenders in the field of substation automation. Only a few companies in the world are currently able to offer this certification. This makes it all the better for us; the fact that we can also meet this criterion now. Confirmation from an independent testing body such as KEMA guarantees us significant competitive advantage and underscores our role as a pioneer in substation automation.”
