Layer 3 Ethernet switch.

The LMP-3228G-4X24S-bt-T, a 32-port managed Layer 3 Ethernet switch has been announced by Antaira Technologies. This switch brings fibre-dense aggregation, 10G backbone bandwidth, and 100W-per-port PoE++ together in one compact, extended-temperature platform. Designed for distribution points in utilities, water treatment, oil and gas, transportation, and surveillance networks, the switch lets engineers consolidate what typically requires a fibre switch, a PoE switch, and a router into a single ruggedised unit.

The switch is built around how many distribution sites work: most traffic arrives over fibre, while a few nearby devices need serious power over copper. Twenty-four Gigabit SFP slots aggregate noise-immune fibre runs from remote cabinets and enclosures, and four 1G/2.5G/10G SFP+ slots provide a 10G backbone that keeps uplinks from becoming a bottleneck as camera and sensor counts grow. Four IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ ports deliver up to 100W each, enough to power PTZ cameras with heaters, multi-radio access points, and thin clients without separate power supplies or electricians at the mounting point.

As networks are divided into segments for performance and security, Layer 3 intelligence keeps them connected and resilient: OSPF updates routes automatically as the network changes. VRRP fails over to a backup gateway, so a single hardware fault never blacks out a segment.

ITU-T G.8032 ERPS restores ring connectivity in under 50 ms, fast enough that video, SCADA polling, and control traffic continue uninterrupted. VLAN, QoS, and IGMP deliver deterministic performance for critical traffic. 802.1X, HTTPS, SSH, and SSL lock down access. SNMP, RMON, and Modbus TCP bring network health straight into existing management and SCADA tools, all configured through an intuitive web console.

The LMP-3228G-4X24S-bt-T operates from -40°C to 75°C without fans or climate-controlled enclosures, and its high EFT and ESD protection and redundant power inputs keep it running through electrical noise, surges, and power loss. The compact IP30 housing saves cabinet space, and front-facing connections let technicians see every port and LED at a glance.

The right industrial Ethernet switch.

Antaira Technologies, a global leader in industrial networking solutions, presents this engineering guide to help plant managers, systems integrators, and OT engineers specify, deploy, and operate industrial Ethernet switches with confidence.

When a network failure means halted production or compromised safety, "good enough" connectivity is not an option. Industrial Ethernet switches keep critical networking infrastructure online across environments that would destroy commercial hardware in days.

Ten Capabilities that define an industrial Ethernet Switch.

01. Interconnectivity of Devices and Networks - At its core, an industrial Ethernet switch bridges every device on the plant floor — PLCs, sensors, cameras, HMIs — into a unified, communicating network. Multi-port architectures support simultaneous connections at scale, and managed variants enable remote configuration so operators can monitor and adjust without stepping foot on the floor.

02. Long-Distance Operation - Where commercial switches top out at 100 meters, fiber-optic-enabled industrial switches extend connectivity to several miles. Remote assets, outlying substations, and geographically distributed facilities can be unified into a single manageable network without signal degradation or repeater chains.

03. Noise Immunity and EMI Resistance - Variable-frequency drives, motors, and high-voltage lines generate electromagnetic interference that corrupts data on copper runs. Industrial switches feature hardened EMI shielding and support fiber optic cabling, an inherently immune medium, ensuring clean, error-free data transmission in the noisiest environments.

04. Extreme Temperature Operation - Standard commercial hardware fails below 0°C or above 50°C. Antaira industrial switches operate reliably across -10°C to 70°C standard ranges, with extended-temperature models rated from -40°C to 75°C, engineered for foundries, cold-storage logistics, outdoor substations, and arctic deployments alike.

05. Corrosion Protection - Chemical plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and marine installations expose equipment to corrosive agents that eat through standard enclosures. Antaira switches are available with IPC-A-610-compliant conformal coating, sealing internal circuitry against moisture, salt fog, and chemical exposure before corrosion can cause downtime.

06. Vibration and Shock Resistance - Heavy machinery, compressors, and transportation platforms generate constant mechanical stress. Antaira switches are designed to MIL-STD vibration and shock specifications, with DIN-rail mountings and solid-state construction that maintain secure connections and uninterrupted data flow in high-vibration environments.

07. IP-Rated Rugged Housing - Dust ingress and moisture infiltration destroy unprotected electronics. Industrial switches are housed in hardened metal enclosures rated to IP30, IP40, or IP67 depending on the application, keeping internal components clean and dry whether deployed in a dusty quarry, a humid greenhouse, or an outdoor junction box.

08. Power over Ethernet (PoE) Capability - PoE-capable switches deliver both data and power over a single Ethernet cable, eliminating separate power runs to IP cameras, wireless access points, VoIP phones, and smart sensors. The result: faster deployment, reduced cabling costs, and centralised power management with per-port control from the switch.

09. Unmanaged Switches: Plug-and-Play Simplicity - For straightforward point-to-point connectivity where traffic management is not required, unmanaged industrial switches offer immediate, zero-configuration operation. Cost-effective and field-proven, they are the right tool for isolated machine networks, legacy equipment integration, and budget-conscious deployments that still demand industrial-grade durability.

10. Managed Switches: Full Network Control - Managed industrial Ethernet switches deliver VLAN segmentation, QoS prioritisation, SNMP monitoring, RSTP/ring redundancy, and remote CLI or web-GUI configuration. Purpose-built for complex OT architectures, they allow engineers to isolate traffic, enforce security policies, and achieve sub-50ms network recovery, all from a central console.

Industrial Ethernet switches are not a commodity — they are load-bearing infrastructure.

Specifying the wrong switch for your environment means corrosion, thermal failure, signal loss, and unplanned downtime. Antaira Technologies engineers every product in its switching portfolio to exceed the demands of the world's harshest industrial environments, from oil refineries to offshore platforms to smart-factory automation cells.

Industrial remote I/O system.

Article by Henry Martel, Field Applications Engineer, Antaira Technologies, LLC

In industrial automation, input/output (I/O) refers to the connectivity that lets control systems interact with physical equipment. "Input" is the data flowing from a field device to the controller for processing, while "output" are the commands from the controller to perform actions. An I/O module manages these communications, acting as a bridge between the controller and the devices.

There are two primary types of I/O: local and remote. When it comes to industrial settings, the latter is the more common. This article aims to help you gain a better understanding of the basics of industrial remote I/O.

What is remote I/O.
Also known as distributed I/O, remote I/O is a system where an I/O module and multiple field devices operate in a decentralized location far away from a main controller, often because the harsh industrial environment may damage the controller. More often than not, this controller is a programmable logic controller (PLC), but can also be a DCS, RTU or industrial PC.

Sensors or other field input devices are connected to the remote I/O module, sharing information such as temperature, pressure, vibration, chemical properties, light intensity, and flow rates. These data signals are transmitted back to the I/O module and the PLC. Once processed by the PLC, output data is transmitted to valves, motors and other final actuators, essentially telling them what to do in response to the input data. Signals are sent on high-speed twisted pair wires and fiber optics using Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profibus or other transmission protocols. To enable communication between remote I/O modules and the PLC, an adapter module is installed in the local PLC rack that serves as the gateway between the PLC's backplane/protocol and the remote I/O network.

Benefits of remote I/O.
Remote I/O has been the industry standard for 20+ years for very good reasons. Here are the real, practical advantages of using industrial remote I/O systems instead of traditional centralized home-run wiring:

  • Lower wiring costs: Remote I/O systems substantially reduce the amount of wiring that needs to be run. Instead of running hundreds of individual wires from field devices back to the central PLC cabinet, a single network cable is run from the PLC to the I/O modules, alon g with running short local wires from the field devices to nearby I/O modules. To expand, the company simply adds another I/O module and plugs it into the existing network. Plus, a faulty module can be hot-swapped in minutes without rewiring dozens of field cables.
  • Diverse Configuration Options: Due to the flexibility that a remote I/O setup provides, a greater variety of hardware configurations can be created. For instance, I/O can be mounted directly on the machine, eliminating local junction boxes entirely. Different topologies are also possible depending on the factory's layout.
  • Facilitating Communication in Harsh Environments: In many industrial plants, a PLC can’t be deployed close to field devices due to harsh environmental conditions. In instances of extreme temperatures, strong vibration, or moisture, the PLC must be installed in a safe space—often in or near a control room—while the I/O system is located near the instrumentation.
  • Integrated diagnostics: Diagnostics are built-in down to the channel level meaning that issues like wire breaks, short circuits, and under/over voltage is reported into PLC tags or HMI. Instead of spending hours using a multimeter, technicians identify issues quickly.

Potential disadvantages of remote I/O.
While remote I/O systems offer noteworthy benefits, they also pose a few disadvantages that you should be aware of compared to traditional point-to-point wiring. Drawbacks include:

  • Vulnerability: All of the signals being communicated in a remote I/O system rely on a single point of communication between the PLC and the remote I/O portion of the hardware. If this point becomes interrupted or lost, all of the data being received could get lost. In addition, you would likely also lose the ability to control the hardware. To minimize this risk, it is important to implement redundant communication channels within a remote I/O system.
  • Hidden costs: While remote I/O systems save a considerable amount of money by reducing wiring needs, certain hidden costs can emerge if you aren’t careful. For example, users should know that when implementing remote I/O in a system, they will need to configure all of the additional I/O modules. This can take a considerable amount of time in a large system when even one module in the system is changed.
  • Cybersecurity risks: If not appropriately segmented by VLANs or firewalls, IP-based remote I/O (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA) exposes the control system to the plant network and potentially to external attacks.
  • Latency: EtherCAT, PROFINET IRT, Sercos III and other real-time industrial Ethernet protocols are very fast; however, standard Ethernet-based remote I/O like EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP can introduce jitter and non-deterministic scan times that are problematic for fast motion control or safety applications.

Ethernet switches in remote I/O.
Managed Ethernet switches play a critical and often under-appreciated role in remote I/O systems, especially when the remote I/O is based on protocols like EtherCAT, PROFINET IRT, EtherNet/IP, SERCOS III, and Modbus TCP. Without switches, remote I/O systems can be slow, unreliable, or impossible to build over longer distances.

Switches provide from Antaira remote I/O systems with traffic segmentation and bandwidth management, QoS, IGMP snooping, diagnostics, security and redundancy. They are the high-speed, reliable “highway” carrying the real-time I/O data packets between the PLC and the remote I/O modules. Many of these switches also deliver IEEE-compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, combining data and power transmission through a single Ethernet cable to streamline installation, reduce infrastructure costs, and simplify ongoing network maintenance.

Wireless foot switches.

Controltec, part of .steute, has expanded its range of wireless foot switches to include a variant developed specifically for heavy-duty applications such as welding stations. In such applications, wireless foot switches really make sense because the lifetime of cabled foot switches can be limited due to weld spatter damaging the cables. And during normal work processes, the cables can also be a tripping hazard.

Conventional foot switches are not suitable here, however, because their protective shields are not large enough for the reinforced safety shoes worn by many operators, who still need to be able to actuate the pedals freely.

Especially for heavy-duty applications similar to these, steute has now engineered a robust and extremely enlarged protective shield from powder-coated steel. The shield is fixed to the wireless foot switch and provides enough space to operate both pedals even when wearing reinforced safety shoes as protection against weld spatter. The protective shield also guards against any unintentional actuation of the pedals. A carrying handle facilitates flexible positioning of the foot switch.

An RF GFS 2 XL wireless transmitter has been integrated in the protective shield – well protected from mechanical impact and so that its signals can reliably reach the antenna of the corresponding receiver unit. The sWave wireless technology used facilitates ranges of up to 45 metres indoors, even in adverse industrial conditions. The RF GFS 2 XL is one of the first switches to be equipped with this wireless technology – SW2.4LE-IND – in serial production.

This new wireless foot switch was originally developed as a customised project for a company producing welded structures. Having been successfully tried and tested in that application, it is now available within the steute standard range of wireless switching devices.

Ultra subminiature switches.

OMRON Electronic Components Europe has extended its portfolio of sealed basic switches, adding the D2EW-R series that contains integrated resistors to detect events such as malfunctions and tampering.

Depending on the voltage across the D2EW-R internal resistors, the system can differentiate between normal switch-open or switch-closed status and an open circuit or short circuit at the terminals. By helping detect faults such as wiring defects, equipment failures, or malicious damage, these switches can extend diagnostic monitoring in industrial automation and enhance security protection for equipment such as vending machines and smart meters.

Using the underlying architecture of OMRON’s D2EW switches, the new D2EW-R series has the same tiny 8.3mm x 7.0mm x 5.3mm outline and supports multi-angle operation without using a lever. These features save space and enhance flexibility in customer-unit design, while the sliding contact structure ensures high reliability and quiet operation. Options include polarised mounting posts or M3-screw mount that ease installation in small spaces, as well as press-fit electrical terminals, solder terminals, and moulded lead wires with straight or angled exit.

In addition, the switch mechanism has IP67 protection and is highly resistant to vibration and shock. With their built-in resistors, D2EW-R variants are rated for operation from 5V to 18V over the temperature range from -40°C to 85°C.

The D2EW-R series is a suitable solution for security applications requiring anti-theft or anti-tamper functionality, such as smart meters, safety boxes, surveillance cameras, and automated locking systems. Additionally, it is well-suited for use in factory automation systems that require failure detection and diagnostics, including industrial robots, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

The new switches join the extensive family of sealed miniature switches from OMRON that also includes D2AW, D2AW-R, D2GW, and D2QW sliding-contact types for levered and lever-free operation and 0.1A current rating. Other switches, such as the D2VW, D2SW, and D2HW, which are capable of handling higher current load, are also available.

Ethernet switches for network infrastructures.

The new LMP-0702G-SFP-24-T-V2 environmentally-hardened, Light Layer 3 managed Ethernet switch has been launched by Antaira Technologies. Engineered to withstand harsh locations, this versatile and rugged switch provides both copper and fiber Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to help future-proof the networking of industrial operations.

“The linking of IT systems, controls, and machines has increased the complexity of production-level networks,” said Brian Tutor, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, Antaira Technologies. “Our new industrial Ethernet switches have multiple ports, Power over Ethernet, and high bandwidths necessary to guarantee reliable data exchange on the plant floor.”

This switch provides greater flexibility in new builds and enhanced scalability in network expansions. It comes embedded with four Gigabit Ethernet ports featuring 802.3at/af PoE supplying 30W per port to Powered Devices, along with one data-only Gigabit Ethernet port, and two dual-rate SFP fiber ports that readily support high-speed fiber uplink over longer distances. Remote PD monitoring, diagnostics, and recovery are made possible by built-in PoE software.

The LMP-0702G-SFP-24-T-V2 features an internal DC-to-DC power booster that allows a low voltage input to provide power for connected PoE products in various applications. The switch accepts voltage inputs between 12VDC to 55VDC to power on and supply up to the full IEEE 802.3af/at PoE+ per port. The switch supports PoE power budgets of 90W at 12VDC input from a vehicle, 120W at 24~36VDC input from solar applications.

Redundancy in industrial networks.
Network redundancy is important in any network but it is critical in industrial control applications where downtime negatively affects reputation, revenue, and compliance adherence. Redundancy ensures that processing and production networks remain operational even when there are hardware failures or disruptions. The LMP-0702G-SFP-24-T-V2 improves network reliability by incorporating the ITU-T G.8032 ERPS redundancy protocol, a feature protecting switching mechanisms for Ethernet layer ring topologies. If communication fails, there is a switchover to the redundant path within 50ms milliseconds. The addition of RSTP and MSTP protocols, which prevent network loops while reducing latency, further boost overall reliability and convergence.

Advanced filtering and security functions, including VLAN, QoS, SNMP, RMON, Modbus TCP, and 802.1X/HTTPS/SSH/SSL, increase determinism and improve network management for remote SCADA systems or control networks. Support for IGMP v1/v2 and v3 facilitates faster client joins and leaves of multicast streams, along with interoperability between multiple IGMP versions on a subnet.

Antaira's most recent Light Layer 3 firmware, which allows static routes between VLANs, is compatible with the switch's version 2 hardware.

Environmentally hardened.
Along with a wide array of management features, the LMP-0702G-SFP-24-T-V2 meets IP30 protection standards, making it an ideal solution for factory automation, wastewater treatment, oil & gas, ITS and other industries. Because these environments expose network devices to punishing elements, Antaira engineered its new LMP-0702G-SFP-24-T-V2 to operate across a wide temperature range from -40° to 75° C with high immunity to electro-magnetic interference, and shock and vibration resistance.

The switches install fast in space-limited areas with an integrated DIN rail mount and front-facing interfaces. The switches can be managed via CLI, Telnet and web browser.

Eighty per cent emission reduction achieved.

Improved energy efficiency through onsite renewable energy generation and the integration of green energy purchasing, cuts electricity consumption by a fifth.

Continuing its commitment to sustainable manufacturing, ABB's Mexican production site for load centres and safety switches in Saltillo (MX) has reduced emissions by 80 percent in the past two years. The latest figures show that the site has reduced emissions by over 5,200 tons of CO₂e against baseline reporting in 2022.

The implementation of smart buildings technology and photovoltaics (PV) has significantly contributed towards cutting carbon emissions by approximately 80 percent, with electricity generated from solar energy on site, the integration of green energy purchases and optimization of energy productivity.

The site is using the smart energy management system ABB Ability™ Energy Manager to analyse energy consumption patterns and identify ways to optimize energy usage and improve efficiency in real time as demand fluctuates. In addition to data insights, the system integrates over 1,000 PV panels that supply 980 MWh annually, which is approximately 10 percent of the site's power needs, while the remaining electricity consumption is sourced from Mexican renewable projects through I-REC certificates. The installation of ABB’s Terra AC wall boxes for electric vehicles (EV) charging further underscores the site’s commitment to sustainable transportation.

The ABB Saltillo facility started its sustainability journey in 2019 with Clean Industry Certification followed by the installation of motion detectors, LED lighting, and external PV lighting in 2020. Additionally, skylights were installed in the facility’s roof, taking advantage of sunlight and eliminating the use of lights during day shifts. This has led to significant energy savings of almost 1800 MWh annually by reducing the dependence on artificial lighting.

Committed to water conservation, over 60 percent (3,760 m³) of the water consumed is directed to an onsite wastewater treatment plant, where it is repurposed for gardening at the ABB facility. These actions contribute to reducing the problem of water depletion in the region; ABB Saltillo is located in Coahuila, a state with the fourth highest water stress in Mexico.

Mike Mustapha, President, ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division, said, “Our Saltillo facility is progressing on the journey to achieve the goals set out in our ‘Mission to Zero’ program, demonstrating our commitment to a resource-conscious and sustainable future. Our local team’s sustainability efforts are a solid example of how smart buildings can achieve the dual outcomes of cost savings and sustainability - all while enhancing the safety and comfort of their inhabitants. The reduction not only reflects the electricity consumption of 947 homes for an entire year but also contributes to the State of Coahuila’s objective of reducing region emissions.”

ABB’s rigorous science-based net-zero targets align with the Net-Zero Standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) demonstrating the commitment to enabling a low-carbon society and partnering with customers to avoid emissions and increase renewables. ABB’s scalable program, Mission to Zero™, encompasses energy generation, energy management and building automation for industrial and commercial operations.

Switches for Ex and extreme environmental conditions.

The steute business division Controltec recently introduced compact and robust solenoid interlocks for explosive zones to its range of safety switchgear. The Ex STM 515 series is now being further extended to include an "Extreme" variant. This means: the STM 515 "Extreme" can be used in adverse ambient conditions, such as dust, dirt, wet and vibrations.

Prerequisites include a robust die-cast aluminium enclosure with a long lifetime even when exposed to severe mechanical wear and tear. The multiple coating (passivation, primer, powder coating) guarantees a high degree of corrosion protection, while the effective sealing achieves protection classes IP66/67. Wet and damp are thus not a hindrance when using the STM 515 Extreme – especially since the electrical connections are well protected inside a terminal compartment. Shocks and vibrations are additional ambient conditions in which this STM 515 variant continues to function reliably.

Independently of the Extreme variant, the complete STM 515 series includes practical features such as an actuator head which can be repositioned by 4 x 90°. Equally typical of steute switching devices is a modular design with diverse additional functions. For example, users can choose between the spring-to-lock and the power-to-lock principle (for tasks which are non-safety-related), and also opt for auxiliary release (from the access side) and/or escape release/emergency unlocking (from the danger zone).

Applications which can benefit from the new steute STM 515 Extreme include machines and plants in the bulk goods industry with no explosion protection requirement.

Compact Ex command devices.

A new series of Ex command devices currently being launched by the steute business division Controltec features flexible and direct integration in machine and plant enclosures within Ex zones 1 and 21.

The Ex ES 97 series is based on the Ex 97 series of position switches. This series is already well established in complex application fields, most particularly explosive zones, and has dimensions to EN 50047.

The switching system of this series (slow action, 1 NC/ 1NO, positive break NC contact) is extremely robust and durable. The separate terminal compartment to ignition protection class Ex e facilitates flexible connection of cables directly inside the terminal compartment of the command device. Thanks to the compactness of the dimensions (installation diameter just 22.5 mm), the Ex command devices are easy to integrate in the surrounding structure.

The new Ex command devices are initially available in three versions: with a push button, a latching selector and a standards-compliant emergency stop button. All variants are suitable for use in Ex zones 1 and 21 (gas Ex and dust Ex). Additional actuator variants are available on request.

This Ex ES 97 series perfectly complements the steute Controltec range of command devices for explosive zones. To date, users could choose between the Ex 14 series with connecting cable and the Ex BF 80 in a robust plastic enclosure with a terminal compartment. This is a third option in the series.

Optimal performance of industrial switches.

Henry Martel, Field Application Engineer, Antaira Technologies discusses configuring Quality of Service on Industrial Switches for Optimal Performance.

One of those essential, although frequently misunderstood, features of an industrial Ethernet switch is Quality of Service, or QoS. Essentially, QoS is a set of technologies that prioritizes network resources to an organization’s most important applications, data flows, or users. Sending prioritized packets ahead of other less important traffic guarantees the availability and consistency of network resources for mission critical applications and data integrity during periodic network congestion. Less important traffic is stored by the network administrator using the Quality-of-Service priority queuing mechanism and is eventually sent when bandwidth becomes available.

Link congestion from oversubscribed industrial switch ports was once a problem for networks. Yet as industrial networks deploy more smart devices heavily reliant on their network infrastructure for bandwidth and availability, network administrators are facing similar congestion management issues. As a result, QoS has made its way from IT to OT.

In this article, we discuss how to correctly configure QoS on managed industrial managed switches. By following the steps outlined, you will be able to configure QoS in a way that ensures more reliable, higher performance connectivity on business networks.

Quality of Service (QoS) provides the traffic prioritization capability to ensure that important data gets consistent, predictable delivery

Why Quality of Service is Important.
Periodic congestion is experienced in all computer networks, large and small. When a router or Ethernet switch is receiving more traffic than it can send out, congestion in network infrastructure occurs, resulting in possible latency and packet loss. A familiar example of congestion is when links are momentarily saturated by a network backup, or at certain times of the workday with high network traffic when employees are running the same application simultaneously.

In a large-scale distributed industrial plant, network congestion is more than a nuisance. It is a threat to productivity and profits. Multiple networked systems and automated devices must work collaboratively in perfectly timed sequences. Throughout the plant floor, various devices connected IIoT sensors rely on networks to communicate real-time information on operational status or machine maintenance requirements. If starved for bandwidth, all traffic shaping an industrial network will experience latency, causing lags in communicating timing controls and operational status. Even a few milliseconds of latency can lead to extremely expensive problems, ranging from downtime to equipment malfunctions. QoS gives critical data streams precedence within an industrial network, preventing the unwelcome consequences of latency and dropped packets.

QoS is equally useful when enabled for “inelastic” business applications like VoIP, video surveillance network data, online training, and videoconferencing, since they have minimum bandwidth requirements, maximum latency limits, minimal latency limits, and high sensitivity to jitter. QoS designates priority to the appropriate packets and strategically allocates bandwidth to ensure the best user experience. Employees depend on these services to get their jobs done, and poor QoS leads to poor work quality.

QoS Models.
The three different implementation models for Quality of Service are: Best Effort, IntServ, and Diffserv. While Best Effort is the simplest QoS approach, it can lead to slower speed and less reliable connections on busier networks. The more advanced QoS models “Differentiated Services” (DiffServ) and “Integrated Services” (IntServ) are essential in industries where reliable communication of network data across enterprise networks is crucial, as is the case with factory automation, Intelligent Traffic Systems, or Smart Cities.

  • Best effort: On a network where QoS is not enabled, data, traffic flows, and packet loss of transmissions are based on “Best Effort” delivery, meaning all transmitted data has an equal probability of being delivered and dropped. This First-in, First-out architecture of high speed of data transmission and even packet loss distribution is suitable for non-critical data flows or traffic.
  • IntServ: IntServ utilizes the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) to the existing network bandwidth, to provide end-to-end QoS and bandwidth management for real-time applications with bandwidth, delay, and packet loss requirements to achieve predictable and guaranteed service levels. Call Admission Control (CAC) prevents other IP traffic from using the reserved bandwidth. The downside is that any bandwidth reserved that is not used by an application is a wasted resource.
  • DiffServ: DiffServ QoS resolves the shortcomings of InServ and Best Effort models. It classifies IP into specific traffic flows, and marks it based on QoS requirements. Every traffic flow class is assigned a different level of service. Compared to IntServ, DiffServ can handle a larger number of traffic flow classes with relatively simple configuration that requires less administrative control. DiffServ has largely replaced IntServ in modern industrial networks.

DiffServ architecture specifies that each packet is classified upon entering the network and processed before exiting it. Depending on the type of traffic being transmitted, the classification will be done inside the layer 2 packet header or layer 3 packet header. In layer 2, the marking is Class of Service (Cos), following 802.1p CoS specifications that categorize traffic from a low to high priority. Layer 3 packets use Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) that categorizes priority as Assured Forwarding, Expedited Forwarding, and Best Effort. This is similar to CoS but DSCP also includes a drop probability assigned to each class of low, medium or high. CoS and DSCP markings will let industrial switches know what class the traffic is assigned to and what actions to take.

Configuration of QoS.
Configuring the QoS mechanisms on industrial switches can be a complex process with many concepts beyond the scope of this article. Notwithstanding that, the following truncated steps can help ensure that your switch QoS is set up correctly.

Step 1: Identify the Critical Applications.
The first step in configuring end-to-end QoS technologies on industrial switches is to perform an assessment of your network to identify those applications that require high priority. These will include high bandwidth and-heavy industrial control systems, video streaming, and VoIP, among others, that may deteriorate during periods of congestion. A best practice will involve the leaders from every business department, not just network administrators, in deciding which applications are top priorities.

Step 2: Configure Traffic Classes.
After identifying your high priority applications, the next step is to configure traffic classes on the network switch. A traffic class is a group of packets that share similar characteristics and require similar treatment. For example, a traffic class might be created for audio and video content traffic, another for VoIP voice traffic, and another for all other types of traffic. Three basic QoS class strategies can be deployed, in general, depending on the granularity of applications running on your network:
• 4-Class QoS Model (Voice, signaling, mission-critical data, default)
• 8-Class QoS Model (4-class model plus multimedia conferencing, multimedia video streaming, network the priority access control, and scavenger)
• 12-Class QoS Model (8-class model plus communication services, real-time phone calls, video call interactive, broadcast voice or video calls, management/OAM, bulk data)

Avoid configuring too many Quality-of-Service classes. It is not necessary to create QoS policies for each and every kind of traffic shaping data flow on one network. The fewer classes there are, the easier it will be to deploy and maintain.

Step 3: Assign Priorities.
Once the traffic classes have been created, priorities need to be assigned to them. By assigning a priority, the Ethernet switch will know how to handle the traffic class during congestion by reading the packet header’s CoS or DSCP. A priority command will provide a minimum or maximum bandwidth guarantee. Internally, queuing mechanisms permit the less urgent packets to be stored until the network is ready to process.

Step 4: Set Bandwidth Limits.
In addition to providing bandwidth and to assigning priorities for data traffic, it is equally important to set bandwidth limits for each traffic class. Each class in traffic types will be assigned a base (guaranteed) and maximum bandwidth. This ensures that high priority traffic does not consume all available bandwidth on the network, leaving little or no usable bandwidth for other types of traffic. Recall that the DiffServ architecture also offers the flexibility to share the unused guaranteed bandwidth of high priority applications with other lower priority applications to further congestion management prevent delays and drops.

Step 5: Test and Fine-Tune.
QoS is not a set-it-and-forget-it type project. It is cyclical, ongoing, and requires regular oversight and auditing. After QoS has been configured on the Ethernet switch, it is important to test and fine-tune the settings to ensure optimal network performance. This can involve running network tests to guarantee network performance, determine whether critical applications are receiving the necessary priority and adjusting settings as necessary.

In summary, configuring QoS on managed industrial switches requires: identifying critical applications, configuring the traffic types and classes, assigning priorities, setting bandwidth limits, and testing and fine-tuning the settings to ensure optimal network performance. By following these steps, it is possible to configure and implement QoS on industrial switches in a way that ensures an efficient, well-refined, documented network customized to meet your specific needs.
