Reservoir modelling software.

Emerson announced today the release of RMS™ 12, the latest version of its advanced reservoir modelling software solution. RMS 12 features a new automated method for capturing and modelling structural uncertainties in highly complex faulted reservoir structures with large amounts of horizontal and deviated wells. Operators can then seamlessly incorporate these structural uncertainties into Emerson’s Big Loop™ ensemble automation workflows for history matching and production forecasting. Asset teams can quantify the impact of horizon and fault uncertainty on production as well as the risks associated with field development and reservoir

The new RMS 12 structural uncertainty
technology greatly improves modelling
results, workflow efficiency and
the user experience.
The new structural uncertainty modelling technology is the result of a three-year collaboration between Equinor, the Norwegian Computing Centre (NR) and Emerson. It employs a unique mathematical framework (COHIBA) for surface modelling and depth conversion. The solution combines interpreted seismic data, velocities, geologic trends, well data and their associated uncertainties to produce an optimal structural model or an ensemble of coherent models that represent how uncertainty varies spatially.

Additional RMS 12 enhancements include:
• Streamlined passing of variables across Big Loop as well as other workflow simplifications
• Extended APIs for accessing project data and jobs using Python™
• Energistics® RESQML™ support to facilitate data exchange in multi-disciplinary multi-vendor workflows.
“We’re very pleased that our successful collaboration with Equinor and the Norwegian Computing Centre has resulted in an advanced structural modelling application that provides high-quality subsurface information to users,” said Somesh Singh, chief product officer of exploration and production software for Emerson’s Automation Solutions business. “Together with an improved user experience and enhanced automation and integration with Big Loop, RMS 12 is a powerful application that enables customers to better understand their reservoir uncertainties, optimise decision-making and lower operational cost.”

Emerson’s RMS reservoir modelling software is a geoscience and reservoir engineering solution for creating and optimising 3D reservoir models and increasing reservoir understanding. RMS provides unique flexibility to operators integrating multiple data types, capturing and propagating uncertainties across their workflows, and preserving data and geologic integrity from seismic to production.

Leading exploration and production software suite to deliver high-quality subsurface data.

A multi-year agreement with YPF S.A., a major Argentinian energy company, for Emerson’s exploration and production (E&P) software for seismic data interpretation and visualisation has been announced. This comprehensive software portfolio gives YPF a holistic subsurface view of its reservoirs and exploration areas, leading to a collaborative and integrated seismic interpretation workflow for faster cycle times. Emerson replaces other interpretation solutions at YPF and becomes its corporate interpretation software standard.
As the leading E&P company in Latin America, YPF produces almost 50% of the oil and 30% of the natural gas in Argentina. Production comes from more than 100 areas in Argentina’s five producing basins: Austral, Golfo San Jorge, Neuquina, Cuyana and Noroeste.

YPF sees Emerson’s seismic interpretation solution – combining geophysics, geology, petrophysics and engineering – as an essential contributor to its drilling success. Due to the integrated environment, seismic interpreters will access a unique database and use modelling technology to validate their interpretation and to construct more representative models of the subsurface.

“After an intensive technical and economical evaluation, we concluded that Emerson’s applications provide an interpretation platform that enables project integration, seismic interpreters’ collaboration, and provides easy access to the corporate database while accommodating multiple users. This allows us to maximise the usage of data and reduce the seismic interpretation cycle time to reach the most accurate results in an integrated and collaborative way,” said Teresa Santana, chief geophysicist of YPF.

Emerson’s leading E&P software is part of the company’s overall focus on helping the industry leverage digital transformation technologies to safely optimise operations and enhance production.

“Our goal is to help energy exploration and production companies extract the most from their field assets,” said Steve Santy, president of E&P software at Emerson. “We are proud to collaborate with YPF and to provide the tools and insights they need to increase efficiency, reduce costs and seismic interpretation time, and accelerate digital transformation.”

The first Emerson E&P software solution to be integrated into the YPF portfolio is its multi-survey seismic interpretation and visualisation suite. The agreement also gives YPF access to Emerson software solutions for processing and imaging, modelling and petrophysics.

Seismic sensors.

Omron Electronic Components Europe has announced the availability of what it believes is the world’s smallest class size seismic sensor, specifically designed to trigger the shutdown of potentially hazardous or easily damaged systems in the event of an earthquake.

Specifically designed for the growing number of autonomous IoT systems, the Omron D7S provides high precision measurement of spectral intensity, allowing it to reject impulse vibration noise and only respond to genuine seismic activity. Despite its compact size, D7S features its own internal memory and I2C interface, allowing it to be readily integrated into IoT devices. Potential applications include smart electricity and gas meters, wireless sensors, industrial control panels, electricity distribution panels, fire-prevention systems, home appliances such as heaters and gas stoves, chemical plants, expressways, bridges, tunnels, roads and many more.

Commenting, Fabrizio Petris, Senior Business Development Manager of Omron Electronic Components Europe said, “Earthquakes are extremely common around the world. On average, 50 earthquakes strike each day, or about 20,000 a year. Many are weak enough to go unnoticed but some are catastrophic. We can’t always predict when a catastrophe will strike. Using the new sensor from Omron, designers can make systems safer and minimise the risk of secondary damage after earthquakes by safely shutting off and stopping hazardous devices. The sensor can also help determine damage by mapping seismic intensity and providing building collapse information.”

A key feature of the sensor is its ability to distinguish between genuine seismic activity from an earthquake or from some other source. When an earthquake strikes, the D7S uses Omron’s unique spectral intensity (SI) value calculation algorithms to distinguish between seismic activity and other movement. The sensor includes a 3-axis accelerometer, and on the basis of the resulting measurements, calculates the SI value to assess the magnitude of the earthquake.

D7S is a highly compact, surface mountable module with overall dimensions of just 9.8 x 10.9mm, allowing it to be easily added to any system. The low power consumption of just 90 microAmps standby and 300 microAmps when processing, allows the D7S to be readily integrated into battery powered systems.

Controller for seismic applications!

Yokogawa's Single Loop Controller, the YS1700, is now qualified for non-safety seismic and safety seismic applications.

For years the YS series of controllers have provided reliable and accurate control for many industries such as power, petrochemical, water, pulp / paper, marine and municipal boilers. Now customers in the nuclear industry can have world class control with Yokogawa’s latest SLC product. The YS1700 was released for sale in 2007 and is expected to have many years of reliable service like its predecessors the YS100 and YS80 Series. Unlike its predecessors, the YS1700 has improved features such as dual CPUs with automatic fail over which provides display and manual control capability if an abnormality occurs in one of the CPUs. Other features include a hard manual backup, battery free memory backup and backwards compatibility with all previous YS control products.

The YS1700 is fully qualified for nuclear safety and seismic applications. Qualification was based on EPRI TR-107330 under and audited quality management program meeting the requirement of 10CFR50 Appendix B, NQA-1, and 10CFR21.

Control applications in nuclear facilities are numerous and the YS1700 is applicable to many of them including; feed water control, feed water heater, heater drain control, heat exchanger temperature control and many other flow, level and pressure applications.
