Refrigration motor.

The new PLSES 4500 from Leroy-Somer, is a high-speed drip-proof induction motor specifically designed for industrial refrigeration. Meeting the demand of professionals in the refrigeration sector, particularly as regards reliability and energy efficiency, the PLSES 4500 can reduce power consumption and operating cost by up to 30%.

A refrigeration installation has a strong impact on the energy bill of a company. The cold compressor, at the heart of the system, remains the most energy-consuming element, and can represent up to 80% of total consumption. OEMs or integrators seek to reduce drastically the power consumption of their machines. The other fundamental requirement in this industry is fault-free operation, as any breakdown of the cold production system would cause significant losses.

With the PLSES 4500, a new IP23 high-efficiency and high-speed induction motor controlled by a frequency inverter, Leroy-Somer provides an appropriate response to the needs of the refrigeration industry.

Based on the IMfinity® platform, the PLSES 4500 motor combines tried-and-tested induction motor technology with Leroy-Somer's recognised drive systems expertise. These motors, cornerstones of the refrigeration system, whose robust design perfectly meets or even exceeds the industrial refrigeration requirements in terms of reliability, are compliant with the latest European standards.

Dedicated to high speed, the PLSES 4500 has been designed to operate at variable speed. It was tested and qualified with Leroy-Somer Powerdrive MD2 high-power variable speed drives, guaranteeing optimum electrical and mechanical performance, obtained by using components selected to work together.

This solution using a variable speed motor drive has a positive effect on the energy bill. Offering IE3 efficiency, PLSES 4500 motors deliver their rated torque over a range from 1000 to 4500 rpm, resulting in notable power gains at the refrigeration compressor output. For its part, the frequency inverter adjusts the speed to the load fluctuations - which are typical of industrial refrigeration - by limiting electricity consumption to what is strictly needed for the application. Through improving operating conditions, the motor-drive assembly contributes considerably to reducing the energy bill generated by the refrigeration unit, as well as increasing the coefficient of performance (COP). This maximised energy efficiency can reduce power consumption up to 30%.

Furthermore, Leroy-Somer made design choices which ensure a surprise-free operation of the PLSES 4500 motor, given the constraints of industrial refrigeration:
  • - To avoid the circulation of shaft currents, a particularly common phenomenon in high-power applications, and offer thus maximum protection to the motor and the driven machine, the PLSES 4500 is fitted with insulated bearings and a grounding ring as standard for redirecting shaft currents.
  • - Laid out in such a way as to facilitate the connection of thick shielded cables, the terminal box also has a set of grounding braids that contribute to the good product immunity to high-frequency electromagnetic interference.
  • - The cooling system has been optimised to reduce losses, minimise noise levels and prevent temperature rise. The PLSES 4500 also benefits from a thermal reserve of 25 K across the entire speed range, which increases the winding lifetime.
An ideal solution for the industrial refrigeration from 100 to 480 kW, in frame sizes from 225 to 315, the PLSES 4500 motor combines performance and energy efficiency, whilst maintaining a maximum level of reliability.

Linearization and Teach!

Thanks to linearised calibration curves and very low standard dispersion rates, the new distance-measuring inductive sensors IR08, IR12 and IR18 from the Baumer AlphaProx family offer easy and reasonably priced analysis of the measurement results without any additional cost or effort for programming. Complex reference measurements are also things of the past.

A simple and innovative 1-point teaching process makes it possible to set or adapt the sensors to a special application quickly and easily, more or less at the press of a button. The sensor is only taught at one certain position. The output signal from the teaching point is linear, with the required steepness. This means that the sensor can also be installed wherever the teaching of a second point is not possible on account of the dynamic range of the application. An example of this is the measurement of the deformation of a shaft. Installation tolerances are eliminated directly in the sensor, guaranteeing reproducible measurements and reducing installation costs.

The steepness of the calibration curve can be adapted individually to different applications using an easy-to-operate 2-point teaching function. The sensors assume an exactly defined value at the minimum and maximum distances, and between these the output signal is linear. For applications in which, beside the analog signal, a switching signal is to be generated at certain points on the calibration curve, for example to indicate a critical range, Baumer also offers AlphaProx models with an additional digital output. This combination of two outputs in one sensor allows the sensor to be installed even in places where there is no room for two sensors, thus cutting costs as well.

Award for innovative inductive sensor.

Baumer has been selected as a recipient of a John Deere supplier innovation award for 2015.

This award is presented to a select group of suppliers who have demonstrated innovation in a product or service they provide to John Deere. A specially developed Baumer inductive sensor is a key enabling technology for one of the latest John Deere product innovations. The inductive sensor measures a distance on a target with high speed and high precision. This enables equipment condition assessment. Thus maintenance, output quality and cost of operation of the equipment is being optimized.

Award selections are based on four factors – creativity, feasibility, collaboration, and bottom-line impact. John Deere created the supplier innovation awards in 2010 to promote innovation in the company’s supply base and recognize suppliers who think creatively. The innovative sensor solution was made possible by close collaboration between the OEM and Baumer, Frauenfeld. The demanding requirements of the application ruled out the usage of standard sensors. Baumer’s capability to analyze the application and the requirements during the collaboration resulted in specifically optimized inductive sensors. These Baumer sensors allow for fast and high resolution distance determination even during operation.

Baumer, based in Frauenfeld (CH), supplies a full-portfolio of sensor solutions including inductive sensors, ultrasonic sensors and frequency sweep oil level switches to John Deere. Baumer CEO Oliver Vietze accepted the recognition during formal ceremonies held in April 2016 in Moline,IL USA.

He said after the ceremony: “Our whole Team is very proud of beeing recognized for our innovation capability. It confirms our profound sensor and technology expertise. But it takes more to be really innovative. Product development in agriculture needs to take into account the demanding environment and other industry requirements such as reliability goals, product development processes and project management expectations. This award recognized the level of excellence Baumer achieved in all of these areas.”

Inductive sensor

Eaton’s Electrical Sector has launched a new iProx inductive sensor series that embodies both power and versatility. Thanks to an integrated microprocessor and the unique Smart SenseTM technology, each iProx sensor has a large detection range and intelligence that can be adapted to each application. Cylindrical devices with switching distances of up to 29 millimeters are available, twice the switching distance of other inductive sensors of the same size.

iProx sensors offer a large number of additional functions that can be activated using optional programming tools. The ProxView software for Microsoft Windows and Windows Mobile devices can be used to program any sensor for a wide range of applications so that it is also possible to adapt and iProx sensors as 100 % replacements for other inductive sensors, thus considerably reducing stock-keeping requirements.

The iProx product range is extremely diversified and includes several models as 3-wire or 4-wire DC devices, different thread diameters from M12 to M30, and a wide range of connection options. All iProx sensors can detect metal targets reliably. Their high quality design with a stainless steel cylinder, a 300 ° visible dual-color LED (operational readiness and output status), as well as corrosion resistant front plates made from Ryton and a shock absorbent cast material ensure a rugged design and optimum suitability for industrial applications.

The connection configuration on DC-iProx models is automatic, so that it detects NPN and PNP terminals automatically and switches the sensor accordingly (NPN = sinking) or PNP = sourcing). Sensing range, band detection background object detection (metal), delay and speed detection can all be configured, thanks to the microprocessor-based Smart-SenseTM technology. iProx sensors are resistant to both high interference levels (up to 20V/m) as well as extreme temperatures (-40°C). Sensors of the iProx series are UL/CSA approved and carry the CE mark.

The iProx Series is designed for OEMs, machine and system builders, and is provided with a teach function that simplifies the programming of the sensor in the application environment. iProx sensors can also be set so that disturbing metallic objects can be ignored in the foreground or in the background. “Switch range” mode makes it possible to restrict the switching of iProx to a small range of its total detection range. Enhanced time control functions such as delays and speed detection can also be enabled without the use of external controllers.
