Temperature data loggers in laboratory.

Cansford Laboratories, working within the family legal sector, carries out drug and alcohol testing for workplaces, governments, and individuals. Samples of hair, nails, oral fluid, and dried blood spots are stored in refrigerators throughout different processes of analysis and quality control. Temperature must be monitored to ensure that it remains within the set acceptance criteria to comply with the company’s Quality Management System and laboratory standard ISO 17025:2017.

The Tinytag Plus 2 data loggers with built-in temperature sensors are used ensure compliance with the specific storage temperatures required and Cansford Laboratories’ internal standard operating procedure (SOP). In addition to their use in storage facilities, Tinytags are used to monitor ambient room temperatures, especially that of the laboratory, as the equipment produces a significant amount of heat while running. The data gathered also provides the opportunity to examine and validate the performance of air conditioning systems and how well they maintain constant temperatures.

The loggers were selected for their wide temperature range – from -40 to +85°C – which makes them suitable for multiple monitoring locations. They are also compact and durable, making them ideal for unobtrusive use across the laboratory, office, fridges and freezers.

Automatic data collection using Ethernet connectivity!

Gemini Data Loggers has announced its new Plus LAN data loggers. Plus LAN loggers collect data automatically: they plug into a network point and send data directly for viewing in the Tinytag Explorer Connect software – an easy to use Windows program – by any permitted user on a network.

They monitor across multiple locations with the data viewed at the convenience of the user’s own desk. Loggers in the range record temperature, relative humidity, and also low voltage, current and count inputs, making them ideal for use with third party sensors to record properties such as pressure, flow rates and footfall. A choice of accompanying thermistor, PT100 and PT1000 probes means they are suitable for specific monitoring applications.

Plus LAN loggers can be mixed and matched with existing Tinytag Radio indoor and outdoor data loggers within a system to meet particular site layout and infrastructure requirements. They are ideal for applications where radio signals may be problematic due to network range or physical obstructions. For example, LAN loggers can be used in metal-lined walk in fridges/freezers, or where a remote monitoring point is required outside the range of an existing Radio System, wherever a convenient network point is available.
Plus LAN loggers are powered through their LAN connection using a plug-in Power over Ethernet (PoE) adaptor and have battery back-up for reliability if this should fail. As with the Radio loggers, LAN loggers will keep recording locally in the event of communications problems, and will transmit their data once the connection is restored. Immediate alarm notifications are generated if conditions fall outside user-defined limits.

Radio logger range launched!

Gemini Data Loggers has announced the launch of new radio loggers – Ultra Radio. Building upon the capabilities of Gemini’s existing Radio System, the new Ultra Radio units have a low profile, compact design, making them ideal for discreet indoor environmental monitoring in a variety of premises. Loggers in the Ultra range monitor voltage, current and count as well as temperature and humidity and are powered by readily available alkaline batteries, with mains powered versions also available.

Tinytag radio data loggers are ideal for use in premises with a medium to large number of monitoring points, gathering environmental data automatically using wireless communications. Data is sent via a receiver for direct viewing on a PC, across a Local Area Network, or remotely across the internet. The system self-configures to form a mesh network and is flexible, allowing loggers to be moved or added as requirements change. Data will re-route in the event of a temporary obstruction and the loggers also record the data locally, enabling robust recovery if communications problems occur. Alarm warnings can be sent via email, which in turn can be used to generate text messages, enabling corrective action to be initiated.

The unobtrusive design of the Ultra Radio range means the loggers are ideal for indoor monitoring in public buildings, offices, workplaces, retail premises and schools. A wall mounting bracket is included so that they can be positioned securely. The Ultra Radio units include two dual channel temperature and relative humidity loggers: one unit with internal sensors, and one for use with external probes. There are four single channel temperature loggers: a unit incorporating an internal sensor; and the others for use respectively with a thermistor probe; or a PT100 or a PT1000 probe – both of which are new to the Tinytag radio range.

New to the Ultra Radio System are loggers each monitoring count inputs, and low voltage and current, making them ideal for use with third party sensors to record properties such as pressure, flow rates and footfall. Loggers monitoring different parameters may be combined in each system to meet many varied applications. This versatility makes it an effective solution for example, in monitoring not only temperature/RH conditions, but also footfall, in public buildings such as museums, exhibitions areas and art galleries.

The receiver and loggers in the Ultra Radio range are compatible with existing Tinytag Radio products, and can be mixed and matched within a single system. This Tinytag Radio System is therefore a very versatile solution for meeting the varied demands of the application, the type of premises and the monitoring parameters and ranges required.

Versatile & cost-effective logging!

Gemini’s Tinytag Ultra 2 Thermocouple data logger is ideal for accurate temperature monitoring in a range of manufacturing/process applications. It supports type K, J, T and N thermocouples, providing fast response monitoring for ranges from -270°C to 1370°C. A built-in temperature channel allows simultaneous monitoring of process and ambient temperatures and its connection supports standard and miniature thermocouple plugs. Recorded data is downloaded to a PC via a USB cable and viewed with easy to use Tinytag Explorer software.

Lime manufacturer Singleton Birch is using the thermocouple logger as part of research and development work to monitor the temperature rise of calcium oxide when water is added. The rise in temperature indicates how reactive the lime is at different stages, which means it can then be determined for what final application the lime can be used. Continuous, accurate monitoring is required with data downloaded after every test, and the Thermocouple logger has proved an effective solution.

Temperature in lime production!

The Tinytag Ultra 2 thermocouple data logger recently launched by Gemini Data Loggers is suitable for accurate temperature monitoring in a range of manufacturing applications across a variety of industries.

The versatile logger has proved to be an effective solution for lime manufacturer and supplier Singleton Birch for detailed research into lime production.

The Lincolnshire-based (GB) company extracts the raw material – calcium carbonate – from their quarry and then burns it in kilns to make lime – calcium oxide. Their product range includes quicklime, hydrated lime, natural hydraulic lime, graded chalk, aggregates and other specialist products and services. The thermocouple logger is used in the laboratory to gather information as part of research and development work to monitor the temperature rise of calcium oxide when water is added. The rise in temperature needs to be accurately measured as this indicates how reactive the lime is at different stages, which means it can then be determined for what final application the lime can be used. The temperatures need to be logged at different intervals throughout the process. In order to gather as much data as possible, continuous monitoring is required with data downloaded after every test.

The thermocouple logger is ideally suited to the demands of the process. The temperatures being monitored start at 20°C and peak at about 80°C: as soon as the lime is added to the water the temperature rises rapidly and needs to be measured. Matt Austin, a Chemist with Singleton Birch comments “I chose the Tinytag thermocouple logger as it is compact and easy to use with the Tinytag Explorer software provided. I can easily configure the unit at the parameters I have chosen through the software and then download the data when needed. It has proved to be reliable and user friendly.”

The Tinytag Ultra 2 Thermocouple data logger supports the most popular thermocouples types – K, J, T and N –providing monitoring for temperature ranges from -270°C to 1370°C, depending on the type being used. This makes it suitable for a wide range of manufacturing and processing applications, including the extremes of temperature experienced in hot industrial processes such as smelting, right through to conditions experienced in freezers.

Thermocouples are available either as bare wire, offering lower cost and faster response times, or built into probes designed for specific uses depending on their type of construction or insulation material used. The logger has a built-in temperature channel allowing the particular process and the ambient air temperature to be monitored simultaneously and a connection that supports both standard and miniature thermocouple plugs. The logger features burn-out response and like all Tinytag products it is compatible with the easy to use Tinytag Explorer software for viewing and management of data, which is downloaded to a PC via a USB connection.

Power usage monitoring made easy

Gemini Data Loggers has developed an Energy Logger, a safe and non-invasive tool for monitoring power usage of individual devices and complete premises/installations. It provides the level of performance required by experts with the simplicity of use required by energy management novices, and is suitable for assessment of energy efficiency of both single and three phase power supplies.

The Energy Logger enables clear assessment of energy efficiency for rapid identification of power hungry or inefficient equipment, peak load and unnecessary idling times – in turn allowing significant cost savings to be made through implementation of new equipment and processes.

The Tinytag Energy Logger can be used as both a hand-held unit for spot checks and as a data logger for longer term monitoring. Operation is deliberately easy; logging can be initiated by the touch of a button, so users do not need a laptop to operate the device on site. In common with all Tinytag products, the logger is configured with Tinytag Explorer software that does not require user training and which has been developed for flexibility and simplicity.

Lightweight, portable and self-configuring, the device does not require the exposure of any live wires or terminals so it is also safe. Non-invasive flexible coils are used to monitor the current in each phase of a three phase supply while the voltage information may be obtained via a standard 13A wall socket. As a result, novice users are able to quickly and simply record energy usage information, whilst expert users can use the unit to record more detailed information about the supply. For example, the instrument provides 'Power Factor' (PF) data which is a measure of power transmission efficiency. The PF is significant because of the way power companies bill their customers; they will usually charge a higher rate for industrial or commercial customers with a low PF.

The Energy Logger will prove an essential tool for organisations aiming for a reduction in their energy consumption and assist them with their objectives for achieving or maintaining the ISO 14001 environmental standard. In such cases the Energy Logger provides straightforward, detailed and accurate assessment of energy usage, enabling the necessary steps to be made for improved performance.

Nigel Palmer, Sales Manager at Gemini Data Loggers, is delighted with the Tinytag Energy Logger. He says "Cost reduction is obviously a major benefit of this device; not just in terms of lower electricity bills, but also, for many organisations, in compliance with the CRC EES regulations. Electricity consumption is also a significant component of a company's carbon footprint and as such the effective evaluation of energy efficiency is an important part of environmental or sustainability policy.”

The Energy Logger is the latest in a series of data loggers that have been developed by Gemini for a wide range of applications over the last 19 years. It joins a range of conventional stand-alone data loggers and a radio data logging system designed to support a range of energy efficiency applications, by monitoring temperature, humidity and other environmental parameters.
