Gas sensor specialist acquired.

Eursense has announced the acquisition of an 85% equity stake in Clairair Ltd, the British based developer and manufacturer of sensor technologies, including NDIR.

Arthur Burnley - CEO
“Clairair has an excellent reputation in sensor technology, and a product range that complements our own", explains Eursense CEO Arthur Burnley. “This move will provide Eursense with a test and manufacturing base in the UK, while also enhancing the exposure of both businesses to global markets in gas sensing technologies.”

The agreement expands the portfolio of sensors and measurement parameters available and increases investment in new technologies. For example, this year, the combined business will launch novel LED NDIR sensors for methane, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in different formats. This will include longer pathlength versions for much lower detection levels, which will mean, for instance, that a new methane sensor will be suitable for cow eructation detection and monitoring – an important area of greenhouse gas research.

Following the acquisition, Arthur Burnley will become Managing Director of Clairair. Arthur has been a company director for over 35 years in a variety of markets including gas detection, power systems (UPS), Electronic Design Software and CAD/CAE, and was a director of Alphasense for 19 years before founding Eursense in 2022.

Originally founded by Dr Alan Doncaster in 2006, Clairair is an independent sensor company, specialising in a wide range of sensing technologies including optical, catalytic, solid state, photochemical, ion and thermal methods. Clairair offers products including gas sensors, OEM transmitters and NDIR sensors, providing extensive applications support and custom solutions to meet client needs. Following the acquisition Dr Alan Doncaster will remain as Technical Director.

Welcoming Alan to Eursense, Arthur Burnley says: “We have known Alan for more than two decades and have always admired his strong technical abilities. It is an immense pleasure to bring him and his company into the Eursense organisation, and we look forward to exploiting the synergies that exist between the two businesses.”

Dr Alan Doncaster added: “We are delighted to be joining Eursense, not just because the two businesses fit well together, but also because greater investment in product development and new acquisitions represent an exciting future for us and our customers.”

Manufacturing of sensors for detecting toxic and combustible gases in KSA.

A new 699 m² manufacturing facility is being established in Dammam (KSA) by Teledyne GFD and  partners Industrial Detection Solutions (IDS). This partnership will enable the local production of high-precision sensors for detecting toxic and combustible gases, helping to protect workers and assets at oil and gas production/drilling facilities, LNG/CNG plants, and refining and petrochemical sites. A grand opening ceremony on (insert date) will officially declare the plant open 19th June 2025.

Gas detection is an essential safety aspect throughout the oil and gas industry. With so much activity in the Middle East, Teledyne GFD wanted to bring the production of key gas detection solutions closer to their point of use. This strategy also aligns with the IKTVA (In-Kingdom Total Value Add) programme that promotes local manufacturing in KSA.

IKTVA is an initiative to increase economic diversification and create a sustainable ecosystem in KSA’s oil and gas industry. The programme aims to increase the use of in-Kingdom suppliers, expand local supply chain capabilities and capacities, and drive industry collaboration through supplier development.

By partnering with Industrial Detection Solutions, Teledyne GFD will help to meet the ambitions of the IKTVA via the local manufacture of popular products like its DM-700 toxic gas sensor, and FP-700 and IR-700 combustible gas sensors.

“Our new partnership with Industrial Detection Solutions ensures that manufacturing is closer to both customers and suppliers, enabling even faster delivery of class-leading gas detection products in support of more efficient supply chains,” says Thomas Moeller, VP Sales & Marketing at Teledyne GFD. “The proven solutions manufactured in KSA will better serve a vast regional industry that recognises the importance of a robust and prevalent safety culture. We are proud to be part of KSA’s remarkable ongoing journey of economic and industrial growth, and we look forward to a successful future together.”

The DM-700 is a non-intrusive ‘smart’ sensor that detects and monitors oxygen and toxic gases in the air using electrochemical sensor technology. The intelligent, plug-in, field-replaceable cell automatically recognises gas type and range. Teledyne GFD’s FP-700 is also a non-intrusive ‘smart’ sensor, this time for the detection and monitoring of combustible gases over the range of 0-100% LEL using catalytic bead sensor technology. The IR-700 is a similar solution for combustible hydrocarbon gases. It uses miniature non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) optical sensor technology to detect and monitor gases over the range of 0-100% LEL.

All of these gas detectors support maximum safety with an innovative design that virtually eliminates sensor failure due to water ingress, corrosion, vibration or transient spikes.

Keeping an eye on the volcano!

Following the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma in 2021, the National Geographic Institute (Instituto Geográfico Nacional - IGN) has strengthened its system for monitoring volcanic activity on the island with a new gas detection tool.

The FLIR G343 OGI camera, supplied by Apliter Termografía, can identify carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in real time with high accuracy, improving risk assessment capabilities in areas affected by volcanic activity.

The challenge of gas detection in La Palma.
Volcanic activity in La Palma has created a complex situation for environmental surveillance and safety. Although the eruptive phase of the Cumbre Vieja volcano finished at the end of 2021, the emission of gases, such as CO₂, remains a challenge. Since it is a colourless and odourless gas, it can build up in areas that are difficult to access. This creates risks for both the population and the research teams working on the island. The accumulation of CO₂ in low or poorly-ventilated areas displaces oxygen from the air. This can cause dizziness, shortness of breath, disorientation and even loss of consciousness. In volcanic environments, where gas is concentrated in depressions in the ground or enclosed spaces, the risk is even higher.

Deputy Director of IGN & Commercial Director
of Apliter with the FLIR G343
In La Palma, the lack of real-time sensors made it difficult to detect these dangerous areas, which increased the risk of accidental exposure. To improve the surveillance and monitoring of these emissions, IGN needed a solution, such as an OGI thermal imaging camera, that would provide accurate data immediately and enable rapid action.

To address this challenge, Apliter Termografía supplied the FLIR G343, a specialised gas detection device using Optical Gas Imaging (OGI). Unlike traditional methods, which require sample collection and laboratory analysis, this thermal imaging camera can detect gases directly in the field. It provides real-time data that optimises monitoring and reduces exposure to risk areas.

Innovation in volcano monitoring.
Carmen López, the Deputy Director General of Surveillance, Alerts and Geophysical Studies at the National Geophysical Observatory - IGN, highlighted the importance of this new tool, stating that “No volcano observatory has a volcano surveillance tool as powerful as this camera”.

Detection of gas  using the OGI camera.
Apliter Termografía’s commercial director travelled in person to La Palma to deliver the FLIR G343 and demonstrate how it works. During the field tests, IGN researchers saw first-hand how the device can identify areas with a build-up of CO₂, optimise their everyday tasks and improve safety in post-eruption monitoring.

Impact of the thermal imaging camera with optical gas imaging (OGI) on safety and science.
By adopting the FLIR G343, IGN has managed to optimise its ability to respond to post-eruption activity in La Palma. The thermal imaging gas detection camera has not only enhanced researchers’ safety, but also aids real-time decision-making and collection of essential data for scientific studies on the evolution of the phenomenon and its long-term implications.

This success story shows how a combination of advanced technology and specialised knowledge can make a big difference in natural risk management. The collaboration between Apliter Termografía and FLIR reaffirms their commitment to safety, research and development of innovative solutions for high-risk environments.

Proven and popular gas detection.

Versatile, high-performance gas detection with easy deployment

There are many prerequisites when it comes to gas detection, not least maximum flexibility, increased performance and minimal installation costs. Add in modern expectations such as smart features and the ability to detect explosive, toxic or asphyxiant gases, and the list of potential solutions soon becomes short. Prominent among the choices, however, is the proven and popular iTrans 2 fixed gas detector from Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection.

Offering smart sensor capabilities that support an intelligent electronics platform, the iTrans 2 provides one or two points of detection from a single head for maximum flexibility, with both readings shown on the standard-issue, LED and display. Gas sensors are mountable directly to the transmitter, or remotely.

For the detection of explosive and toxic gas, or oxygen, the iTrans 2 accepts infrared, catalytic bead or electrochemical sensors. Specifically, in addition to the LEL (lower explosive limit) sensor range, the iTrans 2 is configurable with a 0-100% volume methane infrared sensor for bio-gas applications and CO2 infrared sensors ranging from 0.5% to 100% volume. All are pre-calibrated using smart technology to enable automatic sensor recognition and data transfer. The device displays sensor life data automatically after each calibration.

Offering cable-saving and time-saving installation, the iTrans 2 is suitable for almost any application via common configurations that include 3-wire (4-20mA) and 4-wire (digital ModBus) models. Both allow for full utilisation of the gas detector’s features and options, and use with all iTrans 2 sensors.

iTrans 2 offers analogue 4-20mA and digital RS-485 Modbus (9600 baud) outputs. The HART communication protocol is optional, enabling remote communication across the 4-20mA signal for diagnostics, commissioning and calibration. A simple magnetic wand further aids ease of use by allowing full transmitter configuration and calibration without opening the explosion-proof housing.

The housing comes as standard in epoxy-coated aluminium, with an optional 316 stainless steel version available for corrosive environments. Operating temperature is -40°C to +75°C. Although this robust specification is ideal for many heavy industry applications, the iTrans 2 is equally at home in smaller systems and boiler rooms, for example. Indeed, this tried and tested gas detector is suitable for sectors that extend from oil and gas, offshore drilling, utilities and petrochemical, through to water and wastewater treatment, and food and beverage production. Certifications include CSA, ATEX, IECEx, INMETRO, CCC and China Ex.

Notably, the microprocessor-controlled transmitters are capable of plug and play, stand-alone operation or multi-point system configuration. The monitor’s stand-alone operational ability arrives courtesy of optional on-board relays that can activate alarms, horns or fans, and can also shut down a system without the need for return wiring to a central control panel.

With so much versatility and functionality, whatever the application or requirement, the iTrans 2 from Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection has already proven itself as the market’s most comprehensive and competent tool for the job.

Gas detector at safety integrity level.

A new GD1 laser-based gas detector, with full SIL2 3rd party approval, has been unveiled by Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection (GFD). This ground-breaking development means that the GD1 SIL2 is the market´s first open-path gas detector for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) safety-related applications.

The global importance of SIL (Safety Integrity Level) has grown substantially in the oil, gas, petrochemical and other process industries over the past 10 years. It makes sense, therefore, that devices such as gas detectors demonstrate their suitability and competence in line with the latest SIL2 third-party certification.

The GD1 from Teledyne GFD first entered the market in 2011, with well over 1600 units since deployed at oil and gas exploration and production (Onshore & Offshore) companies throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world.

With its new certification, the GD1 is now suitable for use in systems with SIL2 requirements. To provide some context, a typical SIL1 ATEX-certified gas detection device/system will come complete with the functional approval according to IEC 60079-29-3 and require regular maintenance. The step from SIL1 to SIL2 requires built-in automatic self-testing of hardware components and this means reduced maintenance intervals for sensors, and reduced downtime.

GD1 complies to the latest standard for IEC 60079-0:2017 (IECEx).

Teledyne GFD´s innovative GD1 will prove attractive in SIL2 applications for several reasons, not in the least its unique customized tunable laser diode that eliminates environmental effects from sun, rain or fog. In fact, the GD1 can operate with up to 98% obscuration, boosting overall site safety. This capability is possible because light emitted by the detector travels as a cone from one point to another, rather than as a conventional straight beam. In other words, the beam expands after transmission and is almost a meter in diameter when it reaches the receiver mounted 75m away. It can therefore penetrate harsh environments that competitor solutions may find difficult.

With its fast and fail-safe laser, the GD1 performs real-time dual automatic calibration and automatic proof testing, thus eliminating the need for manual intervention and reducing maintenance costs. Further advantages include low power consumption (15W), very long lifespan and a high sampling/detection rate of 8000 times per second thanks to its ultra-stable optomechanical construction.

All these added-value characteristics mean the GD1 can replace multiple standard detectors to cover the same risk, making it an economic solution that typically demonstrates real cost savings within two years.
