A new integration between ABB Ability™ Building Pro and Samsung SmartThings Pro, building on their existing partnership has been announced. The integration enables building owners and operators to access building data, insights and controls through a more connected environment.

Building owners and operators are managing increasingly complex property portfolios while facing growing pressure to improve efficiency and meet sustainability goals. ABB and Samsung are directly addressing that challenge by connecting their respective building intelligence and enterprise IoT platforms, providing greater visibility into building performance through a familiar digital environment.

ABB Ability™ BuildingPro connects devices and data across building systems, enabling analytics and operational insights through ABB Ability™ BuildingPro Suites. Samsung SmartThings Pro brings these capabilities into the Samsung ecosystem via a secure cloud-to-cloud integration, allowing data to be shared between both platforms.

With ABB Ability™ BuildingPro Suites, operators can access analytics and operational insights to better manage building performance across offices, retail locations and larger commercial buildings.

In hospitality environments, a dedicated solution based on ABB i-bus® KNX and NETxAutomation software supports guest room integration with Samsung SmartThings Pro. The integration supports occupancy-based energy management and centralized monitoring, helping hotel operators reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency. The solution also supports a phased deployment, allowing customers to pilot the technology in a single area before scaling across a property or wider building portfolio.

For guests, the integration allows them to adjust lighting, climate, shading and entertainment through Samsung SmartThings Pro from their own smartphones. Guests can also personalize their room environment throughout their stay without having to download an additional app. This integration will be rolled out at three proof-of-concept sites throughout 2026:

Samsung's Business Experience Center in Eschborn, Germany;

Samsung's Training Center in Amsterdam, Netherlands;

ABB's headquarters in Middelfart, Denmark.

The sites will showcase how the integration can support energy efficiency, building performance and user experience in real-world settings. ABB and Samsung are thus laying the foundation for a new generation of commercial buildings where building operations and user experience are no longer separate systems, but part of a single, connected experience.

Smart buildings, smart tracking and smart metering.

Wirepas Mesh powered by Silicon Labs SoCs bring low power, high security and cost that enables high scale for smart buildings, smart tracking and smart metering; complete the Silicon Labs SoC portfolio for Wirepas partners.

Wirepas has announced its Wirepas Mesh 2.4 GHz connectivity suite will soon be available on Silicon Labs EFR32MG24 and that their Sub Ghz connectivity is now available on EFR32FG23 SoCs. The MG24 features high security, large memory and low power which makes it particularly interesting for smart building applications. The FG23 is designed for smart metering that requires high performance long range at a highly cost-effective price point with Wirepas’ advanced low memory footprint routing. The SoCs adds to Silicon Labs’ BG21 and BG22 on which Wirepas Mesh 2.4 GHz is already available and targeted especially for smart tracking.

Keeping building occupants safe and healthy.

OpenBlue Indoor Air Quality as a Service is being launched by Johnson Controls. The new offering is the first dedicated "as-a-service" Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) solution for buildings, delivering energy-efficient, turnkey clean air outcomes with an innovative financing model.

"This suite of offerings delivers the market's most comprehensive portfolio of solutions, plus expert guidance, to help customers cut building costs, raise productivity and exploit new revenue opportunities - all while delivering on their sustainability goals, resulting in healthy people, healthy places and a healthy planet."

OpenBlue Indoor Air Quality as a Service provides customers with a long-term proactive approach to IAQ to meet ever-changing health and safety compliance standards while leveraging industry leading OpenBlue technology to optimise IAQ and energy costs. The offering includes five key components:

  • IAQ assessments – Together with UL, a global safety science leader, Johnson Controls will use a combination of science and technology to assess indoor air quality, pinpoint areas of risk and determine benchmarks and KPIs that support better IAQ, energy efficiency and cost savings.
  • Solution application – Based on the results of the assessment, Johnson Controls will apply IAQ sensors, products and services required to meet customers' desired outcomes. Award-winning OpenBlue technology breaks down data silos and delivers all critical indoor air quality information in one centralised place, making it easy to control devices, display IAQ data and identify trends, helping optimise energy costs and indoor air quality levels with AI-powered recommendations for improvements.
  • Remote monitoring & advisory – To ensure desired outcomes are met, Johnson Controls will leverage its global Remote Operations Centres (ROCs) to provide 24/7 monitoring of critical IAQ values and recommendations for improvements from our team of experts.
  • Annual IAQ reassessment – Acknowledging the dynamic nature of all buildings, Johnson Controls will provide annual IAQ reassessments and work with clients to enhance their operations as needed to maximise return on their IAQ investments.
  • Financing – OpenBlue Indoor Air Quality as a Service will be offered through an optional, predictable monthly financing model. Through this model, customers will not have to worry about making large upfront capital decisions. Since the model is scalable, Johnson Controls can help organisations shift their operational models from being COVID-19-reactive to productivity-proactive to meet longer-term goals.

OpenBlue Indoor Air Quality as a Service is scheduled to launch globally in February this year (2022).

Industry research continues to demonstrate the benefits of a holistic approach to indoor air quality control and management. In a survey of Johnson Controls customers, 60% are actively investing in indoor air quality-related measures. Even a 1% improvement in air quality can have a financial impact equivalent to an average building's annual utility bill, according to Harvard research. In addition, improved indoor air quality can reduce the aerosol transmission of COVID-19, acting as effectively as a population that is 50-60% vaccinated, according to peer-reviewed research published in Nature.

Energy harvesting experts strengthen British coverage.

EnOcean has appointed Simon Johnson to manage their sales in Britain. The specification specialist will be working to promote their successful energy harvesting technology into this fast-growing market including smart building projects and the emerging trend of modular homes. Simon will work closely together with John Corbett, Sales Director UK at EnOcean, and report to Jürgen Baryla, Vice President Sales.

Simon Johnson joins EnOcean from Theben AG, a specialist in smart home technology focussed on KNX, where he spent three years as Sales and Specification Specialist. Simon previously ran his own electrical contracting business. He has a keen interest in modern building control solutions, with a number of family home renovation projects to his name making him aware of the specific requirements.

“We are delighted to have Simon join the team with his high level of experience,” said Jürgen Baryla. “He has a successful track record of sales of smart building technology, as well as unique insight into installing these technologies and making them work in a real building environment. We believe he will be a real asset to our UK customers.”

Legislation and tougher controls on energy usage are likely to further boost demand, which EnOcean is ready to fulfil enabling highly flexible and maintenance-free sensor solutions. “There can be huge benefits from monitoring the usage of buildings and internal environments using cleverly deployed sensors,” added Simon Johnson. “These include increased productivity, higher comfort, reduced energy costs, proactive rather than reactive facilities management and better use of space.”
