Robust connectors stocked!

RS Components (RS) has introduced a highly robust series of connectors for industrial applications. Manufactured by Hirose Electric, a global leader in high-quality connectors, the ix Industrial™ series meets all the requirements for space-constrained applications and can support I/O signal transmission speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second.

The ix Industrial™ series is suitable for a range of industrial applications including factory automation controllers, industrial robotics, servo amplifiers, PLCs and many others such as security systems. In addition to delivering the potential to reduce installation space by up to 75% compared to RJ45 based solutions, the new Hirose series supports CAT5e (1-Gbps) and CAT6A (10-Gbps) cabling and features an optimised rugged and reliable EMI and ESD shielding design.

Other features of the series include availability with two keying codes for Ethernet and non-Ethernet applications and compliance with the IEC PAS 61076-3-124 standard. Electrical characteristics include: a current rating of 1.5A for all 10 contacts, with 3A capability on pins 1, 2, 6 and 7; voltage rating of 50V; 5000 mating cycles; and an operating temperature of from –40 up to +85°C.

The connector receptacle can be mounted in parallel with a pitch distance of only 10mm, which enables close side-by-side positioning of multiple connectors on a single PCB. The receptacle shell is PCB mounted via through-hole solder legs to enhance PCB retention, and the wire-termination unit and cable clamp are integrated into a single plug shell. Additionally, the snap-in I/O plug connector offers a positive metal lock, which provides a clear tactile click to ensure secure mating.

Large screen HMI.

The HG5G-V 15” human-machine interface (HMI) touchscreen from IDEC is the largest model in the High-Performance family. This HMI offers more display real estate so applications can readily show extensive process information with improved aesthetics and visibility.

The HG5G-V 15” TFT-LCD screen features a resolution of 1024x768 pixels, producing vivid images and giving users an additional option in the High-Performance family scaled to fit larger applications. Like all HMIs in the series, the HG5G-V offers top-performing brightness of 650 cd/m2 to deliver greater visibility, even in high-glare locations such as direct sunlight. Communications and IIoT
Communications capabilities are bolstered by the addition of BACnet/IP, suitable for a wide range of building automation and HVAC applications. Support is included for over 100 other serial and networking industrial protocols such as Modbus RTU Master/Slave and Modbus TCP/IP. Up to four protocols can be used simultaneously, allowing the HG5G-V to exchange data with many sources and systems.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) functionality allows users to configure the HMI as an FTP Client or Server for transferring programs—and for copying or moving files between local memory, an external memory device or a cloud-based file, database or data storage platform. This provides a convenient and effective remote file transfer method.

Web server functionality for HMI remote monitoring and control is accessed using any device capable of hosting a web browser including a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Accessing the HMI using this method gives a user the same functionality as if standing in front of the HMI on the factory floor. Troubleshooting and maintenance of a system is possible any time and from anywhere, saving travel time and expense.

The HMI also supports industrial internet of things (IIoT) operation by serving up web pages developed using a browser-based web page editor, and it can also generate emails. In addition to browser-based access, users can employ the WindEDIT Lite app on any iOS or Android device over Wi-Fi for two-way communications with the HMI.

Control and Connectivity
Direct control by the HG5G-V HMI is enabled by adding up to four expansion discrete or analog I/O modules. Programming to sense inputs and drive outputs is accomplished within the HMI software, providing a space saving all-in-one automation solution.

USB, Ethernet and SD memory card ports deliver comprehensive connectivity, while unique video-in and audio-out ports enable offer additional flexibility. Increased memory and a faster CPU deliver the performance required for even the most demanding applications.

With the HG5G-V 15” model joining the existing High-Performance series of HMIs sized at 5.7”, 8.4”, 10.4” and 12.1”, users have options for applications on any size equipment. This new generation includes useful improvements to line charts, bar charts, trending and security. All HMIs in the product line are configured using the same simple, intuitive WindO/I-NV4 screen creation software, so users only need to be familiar with one inexpensive software package. Another advantage is projects can automatically be converted from one HMI size to another within seconds using the same software.

In addition to building automation, other industries particularly well suited for the HG5G-V HMI are wastewater treatment, machine tool, packaging equipment, oil & gas, food & beverage, elevator control, power utilities, traffic control and transportation, and others. With extensive communication and IIoT capabilities combined with expanded I/O, the HG5G HMI can control and connect to many types of systems, provide superior local visualization and enable convenient remote access.


Metal hoods and housings for connections.

The metal hoods and housings of the Han® B, EMC and M series from Harting, now offer rear mounting options for contact inserts, a solution which greatly simplifies the preassembly of interfaces for control cabinets.

With the new Han® metal housings, it is possible to lock the prefabricated inserts directly from the rear into the bulkhead mounting housing from the interior of a control cabinet. In the past, Han® inserts had to be conducted from the inside of the cabinet through the panel cutout, before they could be preassembled outside. After that, they were pushed back and fixed into the bulkhead mounted housing.

In the newly designed metal hoods and housings, the insulation bodies are inserted into a plastic holding frame that snaps safely into the aluminum die-cast enclosure, supported by a lug. To achieve protection in accordance with class IP65/66 and to guard against the effects of UV radiation and ozone, the flange rubber seal is laid completely into the interior of the housings.

The housings of the Han® M series were redesigned according to the same principles. Han® M hoods are particularly suitable for harsh environments, for example, on the exterior of wind turbines.
By the end of this year, rear mounting inserts with a continuous 360°-degree shielding will also be available. With Han® EMC, the shielding is always on the metal hood or housing, with the hoods requiring special EMC cable glands.

With the new mounting options, the preassembly of cabinet components becomes simplified and increasingly efficient, as more elements of control cabinets, machine modules and cable harnesses can now be prefabricated separately. As a result, the proportion of prefabrication increases and the overall assembly costs decrease. Further cost savings are achieved as the new and old variants of the Han® metal hoods and housings are completely compatible with each other.

Emissions monitoring in India.

Visitors to CEM India 2019 (New Delhi 24-26 Sept.) can now register online. Focusing on continuous emissions monitoring, the event will provide access to information on new Indian environmental regulations, along with the latest monitoring methods and technologies for reliable regulatory compliance.

Following the extraordinary success of the 2017 event, organiser Marcus Pattison says: “In addition to air emissions, the 2019 event will also address the monitoring of industrial effluent, so we have had to enlarge the exhibition space, but at the time of writing only a handful of stands remain available.

The Indian Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is responsible for the planning and execution of a nationwide programme for the prevention, control or abatement of water and air pollution, and a speaker from CPCB will open the conference by providing an update on the implementation of Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) in India.

With new environmental regulations on both emissions to air and water, a broad spectrum of Indian industries will have to implement reliable monitoring programmes to demonstrate compliance. Consequently, there is an enormous requirement for monitoring equipment and technology, so CEM 2019 will be an ideal opportunity for Indian companies, consultants, regulators and researchers to find the best and most cost-effective solutions to their monitoring needs.

Over 700 visitors attended the 2017 event, 95% of which were looking to purchase monitoring equipment. Feedback from the visitors was unanimously positive; for example, a CPCB visitor said: “It was a wonderful learning experience. I learned a lot about the certified technologies relating to the advanced CEM technologies that have been adopted worldwide.”

The CEM India 2019 Conference will provide visitors with detailed information on emissions monitoring, and the Exhibition will enable them to discuss practical monitoring issues with industry experts. Empty cable reels.

Cliff Electronics is now offering its rugged cable reel empty to allow customers to create their own bespoke cable assemblies.

John Hall, General Manager of Cliff Electronics, comments; “We are a major designer and manufacturer of test lead sets supplied with many well-known brands of test meters, as well as major suppliers to popular brands of after-market test lead sets. We are frequently asked for one-off or low volume special cable reels which are not economic to manufacture. Allowing end users to buy the cable reel empty and assemble themselves is an elegant solution to these enquiries.”

Their very popular standard test leads are predominately used by electrical test and safety PAT testers, electrical contractors and test and repair houses and are popular as replacements for damaged OEM version. Offering their customers the empty cable reel allows them to load it with any cable and connector of their choice without having to meet large minimum order quantities or incur NRE charges for factory assembled custom versions. Custom cable options include fibre-optic, audio, coax and more.

With overall dimensions of 240 x 130 x 176 mm the ABS material cable reel has a simple “snap and screw” assembly and a recess is provided on both sides of the handle for product marking or branding.

Strong sales forecast!

Brad Guay
Brad Guay is no ordinary new recruit to the OTT sales team. With a degree in Meteorology from Penn State University, he has worked for the Colorado-based Center for Severe Weather Research on a tornado research project investigating ground level conditions inside tornados. Brad worked as part of a team which deployed meteorological instruments into the paths of tornadoes at close range.

Commenting on Brad’s appointment, OTT Hydromet Managing Director, Nigel Grimsley said: “We are delighted to welcome Brad to our team; with in-depth knowledge of risk management, he understands the importance of reliable monitoring data, so he is well placed to help our customers find solutions to their monitoring needs.”

More recently, Brad worked in the sales team at Risk Management Solutions in New York City. Financial institutions use RMS models to better understand catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes and floods.

Supporting 5G network.

South Korea’s leading mobile operator, KT Corporation, has selected the new Anritsu Field Master Pro™ MS2090A RF handheld spectrum analyzer to test the world’s first 5G nationwide network in the sub-6 GHz band. The Field Master Pro was selected because it supports 5G New Radio (5G NR) demodulation measurements in a field portable instrument and has continuous frequency coverage to 14 GHz for spurious and harmonic measurements, which allows the handheld spectrum analyzer to address the demanding field measurement requirements for 5G NR.

Yu Hyun-Kil, president of the Korean division of Anritsu, said, “Anritsu is very happy to be working with KT to build a 5G NR network using the Anritsu MS2090A. We will continue to work together to actively support the 5G NR field test task.”

The Field Master Pro MS2090A is being used by KT to install its 5G network and validate base station performance in the field. Among the challenging field measurement requirements for 5G NR being met with the handheld spectrum analyzer are RF spectrum and signal demodulation tests, including cell ID, beam ID, RSRP/RSRQ, SINR, and EVM, in all 5G bands. The Field Master Pro MS2090A can also be configured to cover up to 54 GHz to support the 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) radios at 28 GHz and 39 GHz.

Hall effect rotary sensor.

The  Euro-CMRK series has been launched recently as part of Variohm EuroSensor’s new Euro-CMRx range of miniature Hall Effect programmable angle sensors. It comprises a two-part ‘puck’ and separate magnet design that is suited to position feedback tasks where especially compact dimensions and extreme durability are essential.

Based on their well proven and now further improved encapsulated Hall Effect sensor technology, the CMRK’s offers minimal axial length with customisable puck mounting and magnet dimensions. Available for single- or dual-redundant CW or CCW angle measurement, and a programmable range from 30⁰ to 360⁰ in 1⁰ increments, the sensor outputs ratiometric or PWM signal levels from an industry standard 5 VDC input. With linearity to +/- 0.5% of the programmed signal range, the sensor offers a wide degree of application flexibility for decisive angle measurement in motorsports and automotive test and development, agricultural equipment, mobile construction machinery, industrial automation and more.

It features an anodised high-grade aluminium housing for added durability and the encapsulated sensor electronics helps to ensure an IP68 environmental rating. The sensors’ vibration specification meets IEC 60068-2-6 with a 20 g rating at 5...2000 Hz (Amax = 0.75 mm). With no bearings and no coupling between the sensor electronics, the completely non-contacting design offers a typical life in excess of 100 million cycles. It has a working temperature range, from -40° C to +125° C with short term operation to 150° C allowing use in the most arduous conditions.

The miniature Euro-CMRK sensor has a 16.5 mm PCD radial slot mounting for two M2 mounting bolts, a maximum mounting flange width of only 21.5 mm and axial length of just 5.2 mm. A choice of five standard magnet options include threaded and plug designs with the further option of custom or user supplied magnets. Generous alignment tolerances, with the permitted radial offset of +/- 3 mm and up to 3 mm between sensor and magnet faces, make for straightforward installation. In certain applications, the sensor electronics and magnet can be located through non-magnetic liquid or solid materials rather than air-space - adding further flexibility and enhanced protection in very space restricted or environmentally challenging applications.

Electrical connection is 500 mm long Raychem 55 cable in a three-wire version for the single channel variant and a six-wire version for the dual redundant model. Customer specified connector options and alternative cable lengths are also fully available on request.

The new puck and magnet style Euro-CMRK complements two other new Hall Effect housed designs from Variohm EuroSensor in its Euro-CMRx miniature angle sensor range. Both feature integral bearings and shafts and include encapsulated sensor electronics - offering similarly impressive environmental and electrical specifications. The Euro CMRT series has a miniature micro-threaded mounting, the Euro-CMRS has flange mounting. Whilst the dimensions for these new miniature sensors are the smallest currently available, a key design factor includes their ability for straightforward customisation and scalability to exactly match and simplify the customer’s installation requirements.

The new Euro CMRx range was designed and is produced at Variohm EuroSensor’s ISO 9001:2015 quality-certified manufacturing facility where the company manufactures sensor components and sub-systems for position, force, pressure, load, and temperature measurement.

Advanced NOx analysis.

Signal Group has announced the latest additions to its advanced Series IV gas analysers. The QUASAR instruments employ chemiluminescence detection for the continuous measurement of NOx, Nitric Oxide, Nitrogen Dioxide or Ammonia in applications such as engine emissions, combustion studies, process monitoring, CEMS and gas production.

Commenting on the launch, Signal MD James Clements said: “The sensing technology in these analysers is the result of several decades of development, delivering accurate, reliable analysers that are simple to operate. As part of the Series IV platform, they also offer market leading capability in communications and data management.”

Heated vacuum chemiluminescence is the reference method for monitoring NOx (combined NO and NO2), offering higher sensitivity with minimal quenching effects, and a heated reaction chamber facilitates the processing of hot, wet sample gases without condensation. Signal’s vacuum technology improves the signal to noise ratio, and a fast response time makes it ideal for real-time reporting applications. However, a non-vacuum version is available for trace NOx measurements such as RDE (Real-world Driving Emissions) on-board vehicle testing, for which a 24VDC version is available.

Series IV instruments are compatible with 3G, 4G, GPRS, Bluetooth, Wifi and satellite communications; each instrument has its own IP address and runs on Windows software. This provides users with simple, secure access to their analyzers at any time, from anywhere.

Internal logging and a colour touch-screen display provide users with simple onsite access to data, and a screenless version is available for systems integrators.

Oscilloscopes market redefined.

Two new oscilloscopes have been added by Tektronix, to its product line up with the launch of the 3 Series MDO and the 4 Series MSO. Engineered for a wide range of demanding applications at an affordable price, Tektronix’ new mind-range oscilloscopes have been reimagined with the award-winning user experience and industrial design first introduced in the 5 and 6 Series MSOs. Built from the engineer up, the 3 Series MDO and the 4 Series MSO round out Tektronix’ portfolio of oscilloscopes.

To meet a wide variety of development challenges, engineers need test instruments that are capable, versatile and, most of all, easy to use. The new 3 Series MDO and 4 Series MSO feature the largest display sizes in their class, highly intuitive touchscreen user interfaces, class-leading performance and advanced analysis capabilities.

4 Series MSO: Large display, up to 6 Flex Channel® inputs
Large oscilloscope displays enhance user experience and speed up debugging and analysis tasks. The new 4 Series MSO features a 13.3-in. display with 1920 x 1080 HD resolution, the largest and highest resolution in its class. It offers bandwidths up to 1.5 GHz and uses 12-bit ADCs for the highest vertical resolution in its class as well. It is the first scope in this class to offer six input channels and with innovative FlexChannel™ technology, any input channel can be converted from an analog to eight digital channels simply by connecting a logic probe.

To meet a diverse range of application requirements, the 4 Series MSO is available with bandwidths starting at 200 MHz and is well supported with options including serial decode and analysis, an arbitrary/function generator and a DVM/frequency counter. The new Spectrum View feature offers time correlated frequency domain analysis with independent spectrum controls. A power analysis package is available to automate AC line, switching device, ripple and sequencing measurements.

Bandwidth and options are all field upgradeable. All models deliver a 6.25 GS/s sample rate on all analog and digital channels. Standard record length is 31.25 Mpoints with option for 62.5 Mpoints.

3 Series MDO: New levels of versatility
With a starting price point of €3,570, the 3 Series MDO is intended to be the compact, versatile test instrument that sits on the desk of every engineer. It features a sleek industrial design and the largest display in its class at 11.6-in. with full high-definition resolution. It uses the same intuitive user interface as the rest of the portfolio with a similar set of knobs and buttons but takes up less than 6 inches of depth on a bench.

The 3 Series MDO is more than an oscilloscope and can cover a wide range of debugging and validation tasks. It offers an optional spectrum analyzer up to 3 GHz, with a separate RF input and specifications comparable to a standalone analyzer. This enables engineers to quickly debug wireless components in their designs or quickly track down sources of unwanted EMI emissions without having to use another instrument. Sixteen digital input channels are available for mixed signal analysis. Comprehensive serial protocol debugging and triggering options, optional power measurement and an optional AFG set the standard for versatility. A DVM/frequency counter is included for free with product registration.

The new 3 Series MDO is available in bandwidths starting at 100 MHz and extending to 1 GHz. Models are available with 2.5 GS/s or 5 GS/s sample rates on all analog and digital channels. Standard record length is 10 Mpoints. For investment protection, bandwidths and options are fully field upgradeable.

The critical last few inches
The distance between the front of the oscilloscope to the device under test are critical to gaining insight into troublesome circuits. Both the 3 Series MDO and 4 Series MSO use the TekVPI probe interface, giving access to the full range of Tektronix differential voltage probes, active voltage probes, and current probes, plus the recently-introduced power rail probes and optically-isolated differential probes.

DIN-Rail Power Supply for Industrie 4.0.

PULS Power has introduced their first power supply providing systems designers real-time information on power, temperature and status data, supplied directly from the power supply via their proprietary IO-Link port.

“A power supply is situated at a central nodal point in any system,“ comments Marco van der Linden,  Country manager for PULS in Britain. ”There is more than just output current flowing, a power supply can be used to record a significant amount of real-time information that is of particular interest to the end user as well as the system manufacturer.”

Product manager for gas analysis.

Keith Warren has been appointed Product Manager for process oxygen Paramagnetic and Zirconia products with Servomex.

Based at Servomex’s Technical Centre in Crowborough (GB), Keith will oversee the strategic development and sales of key products in Servomex’s SERVOTOUGH gas analysis range that includes the Oxy 1800 and 1900 oxygen analyzers, OxyExact 2200 high-performance oxygen analyzer and the FluegasExact 2700 combustion analyzer.

Most recently a Gas Analytics Business Development Manager for Mettler Toledo Process Analytics, Keith was a Servomex Product Specialist from 2006 until 2016 and is highly proficient in all aspects of Servomex analyzer technologies and their effective integration into customer applications. Keith holds a BEng Hons Degree from the University of the West of England and is also Lean Six Sigma Green Belt qualified.

Stability management in Pharma.

Pharmaceutical company Hemofarm, based in Vršac, Serbia, has started a project with the Matrix Gemini Stability Management System from Autoscribe Informatics. Hemofarm is a member of STADA Group, one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies in the world. The Matrix Gemini Stability Management System will be for stability studies across Hemofarm’s rich product range of prescription drugs (Rx), over-the-counter medicines (OTC) and consumer healthcare products (CHC products).

Identifying connections.

TE Connectivity (TE) has updated its K-Type markers, used to identify wire bundles, cables, pipes and conduits. The oval shaped profile has been designed to allow each pre-printed marker to be accurately positioned onto a carrier strip. The marker and carrier strip assembly are attached to the substrate using cable ties.

‘TE K-Type markers are designed to offer flexibility when it comes to wire and cable identification,’ said Philippe Contri, TE product manager. ‘K-Type markers are a cost-effective, versatile marking system that can be used for post termination or where retrofitting is required. They feature self-extinguishing properties and resistance to fluids including those used in mass transit, aviation and military.’

K-Type markers come in one standard size to fit on carrier strips that can hold from seven to 18 markers and are made from a plasticized PVC material, supplied as internationally color coded yellow or white with pre-printed black legends. They are suitable for industrial applications with an operating range from minus 45° C to 70° C (minus 49° F to 158° F).

K-Type markers are RoHS and REACH compliant and meet the BS 6746C:1993 standard for color chart for insulation and sheath of electric cables and the IEC 60304 Standard Colors for Insulation for Low Frequency Cables and Wires.

Impedance & potentiostat analogue front end for biological & chemical sensing.

Analog Devices has announced a new electrochemical & impedance measurement front end that enables the next generation of vital sign monitoring devices and intelligent electrochemical sensors.

The AD5940 analog front end incorporates both potentiostat and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) functionality on a single chip, allowing for sensor measurement in both time and frequency domains. The device features integrated hardware accelerators for advanced sensor diagnostics, best-in-class low noise for accurate sensor measurements and is designed for wearable “always-on” applications.

Compared to traditional discrete solutions which pose limitations and require multiple ICs to achieve similar performance, ADI’s single chip solution offers advantages in terms of system accuracy and size flexibility to measure 2-Lead, 3-Lead and 4-Lead electrochemical sensors. It’s an ideal solution for applications, where high precision biological and chemical sensing is mission-critical, such as industrial gas sensing, liquid analysis, material sensing, vital signs monitoring, impedance spectroscopy and disease management.

The AD5940 is the lowest power, highest performance Impedance and electrochemical front end with intelligent autonomous control. The analog front end combines leading levels of integration and performance for potentiostat and impedance-based electrochemical sensor managements. The on-chip potentiostat allows for a host of standard electrochemical-based measurement techniques, such as amperometric, voltametric, or impedance measurements.

It is designed to be used in healthcare-related bio-impedance systems for both skin impedance and body impedance measurements, and also to work with the AD8233 AFE in a complete bioelectric/biopotential measurement system.

The analog front end chip can measure Voltage, current and impedance. The device consists of two potentiostat loops, a low bandwidth loop with ability to generate AC signals up to 200 Hz and a high bandwidth loop with ability to generate AC signals up to 200kHz. The ultra-low power Potentiostat consumes 6.5uA in biased mode.

The AD5940 measurement channel features a 16-bit, 800 kSPS, multichannel successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with input buffers, a built in anti-alias filter (AAF), and a programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The ADC features an input voltage range of ±1.35 V. An input mux before the ADC allows the user to select an input channel for measurement. These input channels include multiple external current and voltage inputs, and internal voltage channels. The internal channels enable on chip diagnostic measurements of the internal supply voltages, die temperature, and reference voltages.

Its measurement blocks can be controlled via direct register writes through the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) interface, or alternatively, by using a pre-programmable sequencer, which provides autonomous control of the AFE chip. 6 kB of static random access memory (SRAM) is partitioned for a deep data first in, first out (FIFO) and command memory. Measurement commands are stored in the command memory and measurement results are stored in the data FIFO. A number of FIFO related interrupts are available to indicate state of the FIFO.
