Cybersecurity certified programmable controllers.

A new range of DIN rail mounting Eurotherm™ Programmable Controllers, placing precision at the heart of a process has been launched by Schneider.

EPC2000 Programmable Controllers are easy to install, commission and replace. Digital voltage regulator.

Leroy-Somer and Kato Engineering have introduced the D700, an automatic digital voltage regulator specially designed to meet the challenges of energy production in the digital age. It includes all necessary regulator functions, outstanding smart grid capabilities, and numerous additional functions and options that make it one of the most versatile products on the market.

Along with network synchronization management, the D700 features multiple regulation modes, including regulation based on the power factor at the point of delivery or at generator output (especially for networks operating in parallel). Profile monitoring and various Grid Code regulation specifications can thus potentially be programmed directly into the D700.

For the first time, all excitation types are supported up to 25 A in continuous operation (50 A in the event of short circuit). In addition, the D700 can control an external power module that makes it possible to offer static excitation systems up to 1500 A. A special double regulation board is also available to ensure total system redundancy.

The D700 also includes multiple patented solutions based on expertise and knowledge drawn from Nidec alternators. These functions, such as redundant power bridge, curve functions, simplified load sharing, and excitation limits can be used to improve global system security.

In addition to outstanding regulation functions, the D700 also includes many components and options that make it very flexible: a data logger, programmable logic, equalisation and synchronisation, remote regulation, communications bus, current compensation, and "black start" capability (without auxiliary power supply).

The D700 is designed to integrate easily into complex systems (including networked systems). In some cases, the D700 can even control certain application processes to avoid the need for an additional system (such as an automaton). The control software supplied with the D700 is intuitive, and easy to configure no matter what the requirements are. It also includes an integrated oscilloscope function.

The requirements specification of the D700 was written based on actual use cases experienced by the Leroy-Somer and Kato Engineering teams. On top of the internal specifications based on the team's own regulation expertise, customer requests received in previous years were compiled and analysed, including the most demanding and exacting requests.

The result is an extremely versatile product that offers outstanding ease-of-use in operations and during installation or troubleshooting.

Emergency pull-wire switch for Extreme environments.

With its ZS 92 S series, the steute business unit "Extreme" is presenting a new series of emergency pull-wire switches especially designed for Extreme environments. The die cast aluminium housing, for example, is very robust and multi-coated (passivation, base coat, powder coating).

During the construction process, the steute developers recalculated the entire pull-wire system and were able to considerably reduce both the force and the travel required to actuate the emergency stop function. This makes the safety switch easier to operate and also means that it reliably meets all the relevant international standards (e.g. for emergency stop switchgear, for emergency pull-wire switches and for continuous conveyor safety).

Versatility of the switching device also played an important role in its development. The ZS 92 S can be supplied with nine different positionings of the release lever and unlocking mechanism. This means that it can be installed more or less anywhere, including for the first time on the rear side of an object.

The installation dimensions are compatible with its predecessor, the ZS 91, and with other readily available emergency pull-wire switches, making it easy to retrofit existing (conveyor) plants with the new switch.

Options open to users of the ZS 92 S include an LED indicator lamp and connection of the switch to the intrinsically safe "Dupline Safe" protocol via an integrated plug-in safety bus module.

The ZS 92 S can be used in adverse ambient conditions with temperatures ranging from
-40 to +85°C and with wire lengths of up to max. 2 x 100 m. The new emergency pull-wire switch is available now, and will be followed shortly by a new belt alignment switch in the ZS 92 series. Variants for gas and dust explosive atmospheres are in preparation.

Petrol supply chain planning.

Yokogawa has announced that it has entered into a strategic agreement with Chevron to resell PETRO, Chevron’s proprietary petroleum supply chain planning software. The application supports decision-making regarding feedstock selection, operations parameters, and product mix optimisation, as well as future scenario analysis, at a multi-plant level. Yokogawa’s wholly-owned subsidiary, KBC, will manage the PETRO business with Chevron.

KBC is making the PETRO planning application available as part of its supply chain optimisation portfolio. It is anticipated that this combination of the simulation, planning and scheduling technologies will enable oil refiners and petrochemical producers to take a rigorous, holistic approach to managing their process operations – from feedstock receipt through processing and blending to quality control and outbound logistics as well as utilities and environmental aspects.

PETRO has over 30 years’ development history at Chevron, and has been implemented throughout the company’s global operations for key operational decision-making. “We attribute over $40 million per year in benefits from our use of PETRO in a typical refinery,” explains Walt Szopiak, vice president of Downstream Technology & Services at Chevron Energy Technology Company. “This agreement with Yokogawa is consistent with our on-going commitment to further evolve and refine this vital application.”

Recognising that customer issues are requiring more complex, customised, organisation-wide solutions, in 2017 Yokogawa introduced its industrial automation business concept, Synaptic Business Automation, which creates sustainable value by connecting everything within customers’ organisations. Flow in chemical, process, food and life sciences industries.

The Promass A sensor system is mounted on a base plate that acts as a “shock absorber,” effectively shielding the Coriolis measurement from outside interference, e.g. from pipe vibrations. Other contributing factors are the oscillation frequency of the measuring tube, which is significantly higher than that of traditional Coriolis flowmeters, and its completely balanced oscillation behavior. At a specified maximum measured error of ±0.1%, high precision measurements down to 8 g/min are possible, or – if the maximum error is permitted to be ±1% – even a quantity of less than 1 g/min can be measured. The device design – robust and industry-optimized
Thanks to the variety of device options, such as nominal diameter, material, process connection, certification, transmitter type or degree of protection, Promass A can be used in numerous applications. Thanks to its light and space-saving design (the smallest measuring device with a nominal diameter DN 1 [1/24"] is no larger than a wallet), Promass A can also be easily installed in extremely tight spaces, such as in skids. Chemical and process industry:
The wetted parts are manufactured from stainless steel or Alloy C22 and are compliant with the requirements according to NACE MR0175/MR0103. As a result, the entire Promass A measuring system features high corrosion resistance and is ideally suited for applications in the chemical and process industry. Since the entire sensor housing surface consists of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, Promass A is especially suited for harsh ambient conditions in the offshore and onshore sectors where aggressive, salty air is present. Food and life sciences:
Users can select from various device options, such as the IP69 degree of protection or polished surfaces with a roughness (Ra) of max. 0.38 μm (15 µin). The wetted parts are made of 1.4435 (316L) stainless steel in pharmaceutical quality. Various certificates and qualifications guarantee that Promass A completely fulfil industry-specific requirements, such as the suitability for the food industry (3 A, FDA, Food Contact Materials Regulation [EC] 1935/2004) and that of the pharma¬ceutical industry (FDA, USP Class VI, TSE/BSE certificate of suitability). In addition, the Promass A single-tube system is completely self-drainable, ensuring that no product residue is retained. This aspect is especially important in the food and life sciences industries because of their high product-quality requirements.

Web server – direct data access in the field
Proline 300/500 transmitters include a web server as a standard. Using a standard Ethernet cable and a laptop – or wireless over WLAN – users have direct access to all diagnostic, configuration and device data without additional software or hardware. This enables targeted and time-saving maintenance and service.

Heartbeat Technology – for reliable measurements and maximum operational safety
Heartbeat Technology is another highlight. This testing function is integrated into all Proline measuring devices and enables permanent self-diagnostics with the highest diagnostic coverage (>95%) as well as a TÜV-tested, metrologically traceable device verification without process interruption. Test tools with price reductions while stocks last!

ASDs adjust the speed of AC motors using pulse width modulation: this tends to generate a very noisy, or ‘chopped’ signal. Other DMMs may indicate a voltage higher than the actual supplied voltage, and frequency measurements may be erratic. Troubleshooting confusion is removed as the 87V can block unwanted high frequencies to provide accurate and stable measurements of AC voltage and frequency (to calculate motor rpm).

The Fluke Connect-enabled 376 FC Clamp Meter logs measurements to pinpoint intermittent faults precisely without the need for the technician to be present. Those measurements are then wirelessly transmitted to the Fluke Connect app on smartphones or tablets and automatically uploaded to the cloud, keeping technicians outside the arc flash zone and away from dangerous moving machinery, thus improving safety.

Single-mode Fibres.

Laser Components has extended its portfolio of Fibercore products to include single-mode fibres with wavelengths from 488 nm to 1625 nm. Many varieties are covered: for example, single-mode fibers with an ultra-low profile or large NA for improved bending resistance.

Some types have a high germanium content and thus intrinsic photosensitivity for writing fiber Bragg gratings without further hydrogen passivation.

The range of possible applications is as versatile as the number of variations: Single-mode fibres are not only used in telecommunications, but also in laser diode pigtails and connectors, fibre Bragg gratings, sensor technology, telemetry, hydrophones, biomedical applications, spectroscopy, and space travel.

Cyber security standards met.

“We are doing our utmost to support our customers’ security strategies and protect them against cyberattacks whenever we can,” Reinhard Mayer, Copa-Data.

TÜV SÜD (part of the German Association for Technical Inspection) has awarded Copa-Data, the manufacturer of zenon software for industrial automation, a certificate of conformity to the new ISA/IEC 62443-4-1:2018 security standard. This confirms that their software development, quality assurance, and support processes are securely designed in line with current industrial IT security guidelines.

Developed by the International Society of Automation (ISA) and adopted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards provides a framework for closing and reducing security loopholes in industrial automation and control systems, allowing users to take a preventive, systematic approach. January 2018 saw the publication of a new standard as part of this series: ISA/IEC 62443-4-1:2018, Security for industrial automation and control systems, Part 4-1: Secure product development lifecycle requirements.

This provides companies with process specifications to follow when developing products that conform to security requirements. The standard aims to make the entire lifecycle of products more secure. This includes security requirements definition, secure design, secure implementation (including coding guidelines), verification and validation, defect management, patch management, and product end of life.

To ensure that Copa-Data would receive its certification in line with the latest IEC 62443-4-1-standard, the project team – led by Reinhard Mayr, Head of Information Security & Research Operation at the company – had to develop a realistic, cross-industry use case. Structured with multiple layers, this practical example involved a range of different systems of the kind found in a state-of-the-art production facility. These were assembled layer by layer to form one complete, secure system. “Our objective was to define a use case that would not only reflect the real use of our software in a networked production environment and take our investments in security features from recent years into account, but would also meet the requirements of the standard,” says Reinhard Mayr.

At the heart of the use case is a production cell that forms part of a production process. It requires maximum protection against harmful influences from the production areas to which it is linked, such as control rooms that carry out monitoring, network and management levels, and cloud solutions. For this reason, the example that was used for certification purposes also contains a demilitarized zone (DMZ) that is based on zenon technology and in line with the general IT security concepts outlined in the IEC 27001 standard. “The DMZ keeps external influences away from the operational area and strengthens IT security. The strategies and concepts that we have been pursuing for many years now when developing zenon, such as security by design and defense in depth, also help to achieve this. Thanks to our many native zenon protocols, we are also able to make it more difficult for attackers to cause serious damage,” he explains.

With the aim of making industrial IT security an even more significant part of the software development process, COPA-DATA expanded its security management team and gave it more powers. Now that the new certification has been achieved and recertification will take place annually, the entire COPA-DATA security lifecycle will be constantly under scrutiny.

Head of Power Magnetics.

The Board of Directors of Schaffner Holding AG appointed Daniel G. Zeidler as Head of Power Magnetics division and member of the Executive Committee. He will take up his duties at Schaffner no later than 1 March 2019.

With the appointment of Daniel Zeidler, the Executive Committee of the Schaffner Group will be complete again, consisting of the CEO, CFO and COO as well as one Executive Vice President each for the three divisions.

Daniel Zeidler (46) holds a master degree in Industrial Management and Manufacturing from ETH Zürich and an Executive MBA from the University of St. Gallen. He spent most of his career in various positions at ABB, including General Manager of Generator Circuit-Breaker systems from 2011 to 2016. Daniel Zeidler currently heads Trasfor SA, an ABB Group company that manufactures dry-type transformers and reactors for low and medium voltage applications in the drive systems and

With the handover to Daniel Zeidler, the mandate of Patrick Jung, the interim Head of Power Magnetics division, who has successfully expedited the turnaround of the division in recent months, will end.

Optical signal analysis upgrade.

Anritsu Corporation has announced the start of new firmware downloads available BERTWave MP2110A Sampling Oscilloscope. The new firmware will increase its PAM4 analysis function from 26 Gbaud to 53 Gbaud targeting production and inspection of optical modules. As well as featuring both high-sensitivity and high-speed measurements, with this release the MP2110A will now support development and production-line inspection of next-generation QSFP-DD optical transceivers expected to be deployed in data centers.

As data traffic increases due to the spread of flat-rate video streaming and other cloud services, managing this growth requires the deployment of transmission-equipment interfaces that exceed speeds of 100 Gbit/s. New generation 200/400 GbE interfaces start to appear, and use PAM4 technology instead of the older NRZ technology. Although current optical modules such as CFP8s use 26-Gbaud PAM4 optical signals, future mass-produced QSFP-DD and OSFP modules will use 53-Gbaud PAM4 optical signals.

The BERTWave MP2110A is an all-in-one measuring instrument with built-in multi-channel Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) and Sampling Oscilloscope, supporting bit error rate (BER) measurements, Eye Mask tests, Eye pattern analyses, high sampling speed of 250 kSample/s and low-noise (3.4 μW) high-sensitivity O/E interface. The BERT and Sampling Oscilloscope are required instruments for evaluating optical modules used by optical communications systems.

As well as NRZ technology, the MP2110A also supports PAM4 signal measurements including TDECQ, which enable all-in-one quality evaluations of optical modules at speeds from 25 to 400 G. In addition, the MP2110A, thanks to its high-speed measurement and PAM4 analysis, will play a key role in improving optical module production-line productivity. Moreover, adding 53 Gbaud support for quality evaluation of next-generation optical modules helps cut capital equipment renewal costs.

The 53 Gbaud analysis function added by this upgrade is included in the PAM4 signal analysis software option (MP2110A-095).

Flying probe test platform.

In their new row of educational videos, here now Pilot V8 Next > series Seica introduce what they consider to be the most complete flying probe test platform on the market. It provides up to 20 mobile resources for testing an electronic board, including test probes which can each apply up to 2A current, high resolution cameras for automatic optical inspection, barcode and data matrix reading, laser sensors, capacitive probes, pyrometers, optical fiber sensors for LEDs, minifixtures for boundary scan and On Board Programming, high-frequency probes able to measure signals at frequencies over 1.5 GHz (an absolutely unique performance on the market).

Engineered for medium/high volume production, the Pilot V8 Next > series is available in a fully-automated version, capable of hosting from 1 to 12 racks of boards to be tested (even of different types) or for direct connection to board loading/unloading and tilt modules, compatible with any standard assembly line. The Pilot V8 Next > can be configured to satisfy the full range of different board test requirements: the HR version extends the performance to include probing of extremely miniaturized devices (down to 30 µm), while in the XL version expands the standard work area of 610 x 540 mm to 800 x 650 mm, able to accommodate and test “extra-large” boards.

All of the Next> series solutions have Seica’s Industrial Monitoring Solution on board, with the potential for remote monitoring of current and voltage consumption, mains supply, temperature, light indicators and other parameters useful to indicate correct operation, to provide information enabling predictive maintenance and in general to render the systems compatible with today’s Industry 4.0 standards.

Suspended solids sensor.

The OPTISENS TSS 2000, a new total suspended solids (TSS) sensor introduced by Krohne, is a robust, cost-effective immersion sensor for process and quality control in industrial and municipal wastewater applications.

It features a fast response time and can be used to optimize processes, increase yield or monitor limits: target applications in the water & wastewater industry include mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) monitoring, sludge discharge of primary and secondary sedimentation (clarifier) tanks, or monitoring of biological treatment in wastewater aeration basins. The new sensor can also be used to monitor product loss in open channels in the food & beverage industry, effluent in chemical, white water in pulp & paper or thickeners in metal & mining.

In combination with MAC 100 transmitter, the unit offers a complete TSS measuring point for ranges 0...4 AU / 0...18.5 g/l at a competitive price. The single-beam sensor comes with a rugged stainless steel body, scratch resistant sapphire windows and automatic sensor cleaning option. Using near-infrared NIR technology, it is not effected by colour or natural ambient light. It is factory calibrated with up to 6 linearization points with linear or non-linear fitting. Installation without assembly (hung up cable installation) is possible, but the use of fibre-glass telescopic sensor assembly SENSOFIT IMM 2000 is recommended. For more demanding applications, e.g. difficult waste water conditions or hygienic requirements, OPTISENS TSS 3000 and 7000 with 4-beam technology are available.
