Duo revolutionises measurement technology!

Loggito is a new decentralised and highly scalable data acquisition system. In combination with the web-based measurement technology software ProfiSignal Web, Delphin Technology, provide a pioneering complete package to link decentralised data acquisition with global data visualisation wherever the operator is.

As the central coordinator of a measurement network, the Loggito Logger provides internal data storage capabilities, preprocessing options for the acquired data, as well as connectivity to PCs and the cloud. With the pioneering “cloud at the edge” measurement technology, the Loggito is also capable of utilising the full functionality of the cloud. The measurement network can be extended by using either the wired Loggito USB module or the wireless Loggito Wireless module.

Devices from the Loggito series offer universal data acquisition in a compact pocket format. Depending on the selected I/O interface, up to 8 universal analog inputs are available in combination with 1 analog output and 2 combined digital inputs/outputs or up to 6 digital inputs or outputs. A 24-bit A/D converter guarantees precision measurement at a high sampling rate of 1 kHz.

Perfect interplay is provided with the browser-based client/server software ProfiSignal Web which enables measurement data to be visualised anywhere in the world on any device in individually adaptable dashboards. In addition to a range of analog and digital displays, it also uses LEDs and geometric drawing objects as well as objects to enable process interaction.

A particular strength of ProfiSignal Web is its fast and smooth portrayal of trends in y(t) diagrams for current and historical measurement data. Switching from millisecond to monthly overviews takes place within seconds.

As a special feature, the Loggito Logger can be supplied with ProfiSignal Web pre-installed. This then provides an immediate complete measurement chain from decentralised acquisition through to visualisation anywhere in the world without requiring any configuration effort.

Reporting and data analysis software wins award!

Ocean Data Systems (ODS) has announced that Dream Report has won the “Engineers’ Choice” award, by Control Engineering Magazine.

More than 90 product nominations from 43 companies were entered for consideration in the 2018 Engineers’ Choice Awards. IEC power entry modules.

Schaffner's FN 9280 and FN 9290 families of market-leading high-end IEC Power Entry Modules (PEM) are now approved to IEC62368-1

Certification to IEC62368-1 enables customers manufacturing Audio/Video, Information and Communications Technology equipment to comply more easily with the requirements of the new technology-independent ‘hazard-based’ standards approach.

A solid performance!

In its preliminary financial figures for 2017, Endress+Hauser reported a broadly supported growth in sales, solid profitability and a marked increase in employment.

The Group’s consolidated net sales rose 4.8 percent to 2.2 billion euros. Exchange rate impacts prevented the company from generating even better numbers for the year. “Expressed in local currencies, we grew more than six percent in 2017,” emphasized Chief Financial Officer Dr Luc Schultheiss.

“The consumer-driven economic boom has now reached the capital goods industry as well,” said Matthias Altendorf, CEO of the Group. Higher demand for the company’s products and services spurred a significant increase in new hires, especially in production. Endress+Hauser had 13,299 employees at the end of 2017, an increase of 296 over the prior year.

Following another upswing in the business during the fourth quarter, the measurement technology specialist entered the new year with a sizeable rise in backlog orders. For 2018, the family company expects to see growth in the mid-single-digit percent range.

The audited financial figures for 2017 will be presented on 8 May 2018 in Basel (CH).

Calibration & repair in the Netherlands!

The partnership of Anritsu Corporation with Trescal has been expanded to cover The Netherlands. Trescal will now be providing calibration and repair services for Anritsu Handheld RF products including the Site Master range of handheld Cable and Antenna Analysers, and the Master series of handheld Vector Network and Spectrum Analysers.

As a key element of the partnership Anritsu will be providing Trescal with ongoing training and certification to ensure that the highest quality of service and support for Anritsu products is offered to customers. Laboratory automation.

ROHASYS BV, a manufacturer of laboratory products for automating and robotising sample (pre) treatment based in the Netherlands, has been acquired by SEAL Analytical.

“This new partnership creates exciting opportunities for both companies,” says SEAL President Stuart Smith. “Sharing the common goals of improving laboratory accuracy, speed and reliability, this synergistic relationship will benefit the customers of both organisations.”

With 25 years of experience in environmental laboratory automation ROHASYS targets similar market sectors to those addressed by SEAL, including water, soil and food testing. Typical applications include BOD, COD, pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, filtration, organic GC sample preparation and microbiology.

In addition to a range of standard robotic laboratory instruments, ROHASYS also develops bespoke robotic solutions to improve automation in a number of laboratory applications. Products and systems are designed, built, installed and supported from the ROHASYS production facility in the Netherlands, and will now also benefit from SEAL’s technical support teams in Britain, Germany and USA.

The ROHASYS product range includes small systems for small footprints and low workloads, through to custom designed fully automated preparation, reading, filtration and weighing robots, with full LIMS integration.

Heavy current transducers.

The SINEAX DM5 series of devices are programmable universal measurement instruments for heavy current networks: classic high precision transducers for top hat rail mounting, they are suitable for almost any type of monitoring function and as well as for retrofitting in energy distribution and industry.

This transducer is the latest addition to Camille Bauer Metrawatt's large product portfolio. Just like the SINEAX M1000, the predecessor model, and a world first for this type of device, the main function of the DM5S is highly accurate representation of the basic parameters of an electrical network. It then transmits this representation securely via analogue outputs or a digital interface.

The basic accuracy of the DM5 is 0.15% for current and voltage, 0.2% for power ratings and 0.5S for energy counters. The highlights of the new series are its many selectable options and the fact that measurement values are captured continuously (zero-blind measurement). In addition, the device can be individually configured even without being connected to auxiliary power. The optimised and compact design not only saves space, but also reduces cost. DM5S supports up to 32 counters with up to 16 tariffs, while the DM5F delivers very high processing speeds of up to 15 ms. This makes it easy to implement even the most demanding applications such as turbine control systems.

The free "CB Manager" software is not just used to set up the device parameters, it also provides utility functions to support the user to get started, such as printing product identification labels, checking connections, recording measurement values as well as simulation and trimming the analogue outputs. Users can freely define the Modbus mapping of the optional Modbus interface. This ensures optimised data retrieval by fetching all the relevant data in a single access.

DM5 series devices are UL-certified and are regularly audited by an independent test lab. This ensures that they are always compliant with the latest standards and that each device works perfectly. The UL certification is combined with end-to-end monitoring of the whole production process. This ensures that only qualified components are used, and only documented production processes are performed. It allows for a constantly high level of product quality, in conformity with all safety and EMC standards.

SCADA Security Platform for OPC UA.

Bedrock Automation has published a concise, easy-to-deploy interface specification that enables users and application developers to take advantage of the security capabilities of OPC UA communications software. By following the simple procedures outlined in the Bedrock SCADA Security Platform Specification, developers can upgrade any OPC UA compliant client into a highly secure OPC UA channel, across which users can exchange data between plant floor operations and SCADA applications. Three leading SCADA software developers, Inductive Automation, ICONICS and TATSOFT, are committing and releasing support to the Bedrock interface specification.

Bedrock Automation has launched an automation revolution by inventing a universal cyber secure industrial control system from the ground up. All metal, no I/O pins, embedded security, open architec-ture…everything you need to solve all of your automation problems.
“OPC UA provides unique cyber security advantages enabling open communications across numerous industrial devices and applications and providing the end-users options for integrating authentication keys protecting those communications. The most secure OPC level is to authenticate those keys against a known root of trust, which Bedrock supplies via a certificate authority (CA), validated against cryptographic keys built into its controller,” said Thomas J. Bedrock designs and sources its own secure semiconductor components with encryption and authentication technologies embedded at the “birth” of their modules, assembled and tested by Bedrock in their cyber secure supply chain. Ease of integration
A software developer building an open communications environment with OPC UA might deploy a Bedrock OSA system as a PLC to control a process based on input from field devices. To secure communications between their SCADA applications and the control system the developer will utilize the Bedrock Cloud SaaS to generate a SCADA certificate. After verifying the identity of the requester, the Bedrock CA issues that certificate which authorizes the SCADA to access encrypted data on the PLC. The Bedrock interface specification – only 30 pages – provides everything a developer needs to secure the communications.

“Such a simple specification demonstrates that Open and Secure SCADA can be deployed today, and that an applications interface does not have to be thousands or even hundreds of pages. We are pleased to be working with innovative SCADA software providers such as Inductive Automation, ICONICS and TATSOFT, to help them and their customers take advantage of the secure communications capabilities of OPC UA and the intrinsic security of the Bedrock platform,” said Albert Rooyakkers, founder and CEO of Bedrock Automation.

Inductive Automation, based in, Folsom, Calif., has already implemented several installations around Bedrock controllers. “Using Bedrock Automation as our Certificate Authority means we can now deliver our customers yet another layer of assurance that they can achieve the business and productivity benefits of our open SCADA solutions, with minimal risk of cyber intrusion,” said Don Pearson, Chief Strategy Officer at Inductive Automation.

ICONICS, based in Foxboro, Mass., is also taking advantage of the Bedrock CA. “Security is a top priority for most automation customers today,” said Russ Agrusa, President and CEO of ICONICS. “ICONICS has partnered with Bedrock Automation to provide an end-to-end connected solution for IoT and Industry 4.0 that ensures safe, secure information exchange between PLCs and a variety of enterprise information systems.”

TATSOFT, based in Houston, Tex., the first application development platform built entirely for the Microsoft .NET framework, is planning to offer Bedrock secured SCADA solutions to its customers. “We are constantly looking for innovative ways to add value for our clients and customers, and by giving users a cyber secure option to interact with PLC functionality, we are definitely doing that. We could not do this with any other control platform, because none has authentication certificates embedded in their firmware as Bedrock does,” said TATSOFT Sr. VP Sales and Marketing, Dave Hellyer.

Enhanced capability to implement Bedrock and secure OPC UA for SCADA applications is available with the Bedrock Cybershield 3.0 upgrade, which will be announced at the ARC Forum on February 12, 2018. Cybershield 3.0 will be standard in all Bedrock systems and available to Cybershield 2.0 users as a free upgrade in Q2 2018. Process & control sector head.

Scott Pepper is the new sector head for the Process Instrumentation and Control Sector of GAMBICA,  the industry body representing the Instrumentation, Control, Automation and Laboratory Technology industries in Britain.

Scott brings relevant sector experience with him as he joins from Emerson Automation Solutions where he was a Flow Specialist / Technical Sales Engineer working in the Oil and Gas sector.

As well as continuing to support GAMBICA's existing member companies, Scott will focus on increasing the representation of the broader process instrumentation and control industry in Britain.

Fully automatic testing for IEEE802.11ax devices.

Anritsu Corporation has released three new software packages to expand the measurement standards supported by the Universal Wireless Test Set MT8870A, enabling fast and fully automatic testing in accordance with the IEEE 802.11ax test specifications.

The new packages are the WLAN 802.11ax Tx Measurement MX887033A and WLAN 802.11ax Waveform Files MV887033A for evaluating IEEE 802.11ax devices, along with a Full Automatic Measurement Program.

Installing these packages in the MT8870A offers the world’s first turnkey system for production-line testing of IEEE 802.11ax standard-compliant devices with the world’s fastest fully automated testing of RF TRx characteristics for up to 16 devices simultaneously. The Full Automatic Measurement Program eliminates the need to develop customer control programs, helping increase productivity and cut costs.

IEEE 802.11ax is a next-generation WLAN standard developed to improve average data throughput in locations with high client device densities, such as offices, sports stadiums, rail stations, etc. It is currently under review by the IEEE 802.11ax Task Group (TG), targeting release as an international standard in 2019. As the key markets for the IEEE 801.11ax standard are mobile terminals, it is expected to see widespread adoption by smartphones, tablets, AR/VR equipment and automotive. However, since these products also support cellular standards other than WLAN, effective testing of both WLAN and cellular functions is a key issue for equipment vendors.

Anritsu already offers its Universal Wireless Test Set MT8870A as an automatic test solution for cellular device production lines, supporting the WLAN IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/p measurement standards and adding this new support for IEEE 802.11ax will play a key role in providing an efficient measurement solution for all WLAN standards.

The Universal Test Set MT8870A is targeted at production-line measurements of various wireless equipment and modules. Four high-performance test units are installed in the main frame and each of these four units supports fully independent parallel simultaneous measurement of up to four wireless devices.

The XXII World Congress of the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO)—a global event examining the latest issues and developments in measurement, control and instrumentation—will be held 3-6 September 2018 in Belfast, Ireland.
This prestigious conference, hosted by the Institute of Measurement and Control and supported by a range of other professional organizations and universities, is being held in these islands for the first time in 40 years.
