Pluggable terminal blocks.

Specialist distributors JPR Electronics  are now stocking an increased range of pluggable rising clamp terminal blocks from CamdenBoss. The comprehensive range now available from JPR includes plugs and headers with pitches of 3.5, 3.81, 5.0, 5.08, 7.5, 7.62, 10 and 10.16mm.

All headers are available in vertical or horizontal versions with the option of open or closed ends. For added flexibility vertical plug types are available in standard and reversed polarisation. Wire diameters from 0.2 to 2.5mm can be accommodated depending on series, with respective current ratings from 10A to 12A.  In applications subject to vibration additional mounting flanges are available.

Moulded from green UL94-V0 flame retardant PA, the terminal blocks feature polarised mouldings and have guided pin alignment and anti-wicking pins.. All CamdenBoss pluggable terminals are approved to UL and VDE standards and meet the requirements of RoHS.

Typical applications for CamdenBoss pluggable connectors include industrial control, fire and security systems, energy management, power supplies, instrumentation, metering and test and measurement.

Major expansion in Americas for connectors!

Cliff Electronics have established a distribution agreement with Newark Element14. The wide ranging agreement will greatly increase the availability of their products in the Americas and showcase their market leading Feed Though connector range.

Measure and control flow directly at the temperature control unit.

Huber Kältemaschinenbau offers a variety of measuring equipment for installation in the temperature control circuit in order to measure and control the flow rate.

The flow rate can be displayed directly on the controller and can be requested and/or set through the digital interfaces (USB, RS232, LAN and optionally RS485, Profibus). It is also possible to control the flow rate using flow on an Unichiller or Unistat equipped with an integrated VPC byрass or external VPC bypass. The flow meters are available in different designs; depending on model and temperature control device. They cover flow rates between 0.2 and 750 liters per minute and working temperatures from -125 to +425 °C.

The flow measurement devices can be used to complete basic tasks, such as determining kinetic/dynamic features of reaction syntheses and crystallisation, inspections of heat quantities and scale-up testing. Unistats can also be assigned. The new E-grade "Explore" allows Unistats (only) to display or request the current system capacity (heating/cooling), as well as of the temperature differences, and is therefore perfectly suited to developing and optimising chemical processes.

Advanced testing of composites.

A composite testing company in Devon (GB) has expanded its range of services by supplementing laboratory test equipment with specialist rental instruments from Ashtead Technology. “We have invested heavily in the latest materials testing equipment for our Honiton lab, but we have a regular requirement for NDT equipment and financially it makes sense to hire these instruments,” says Paul Yeo, MD of Composite Test & Evaluation Ltd.

With a background in testing for the helicopter industry, Paul established the company around six years ago and has seen considerable growth over that time. “We provide consultancy and mechanical testing services for composites and non-metallic specimens, and have established a strong reputation in a variety of industry sectors including automotive, aerospace, construction and renewable energy.

“As a service provider, we rely on recommendations and referrals, and a high proportion of our income is from repeat business, so we focus heavily on the quality of our work; offering feedback and explanations in addition to test results.

“We provide a quick response to customer requests so our working relationship with Ashtead Technology has been mutually beneficial. This is because we have fast access to a wide range of technologies and by renting we only pay for them when we need them, which lowers costs for us and our clients.”

One of the bespoke testing services provided by Composite Test & Evaluation is ‘compression after impact’ testing – a procedure in which samples are subjected to impacts across a range of energy levels and subsequently assessed by non-destructive testing (NDT). This assessment is undertaken with a hired DolphiCam; an ultrasonic array inspection system for the detection of flaws. Connected to a PC, tablet or laptop via a USB port, the DolphiCam creates a high resolution colour image of defects or damage in just a few seconds; providing a variable angle 3D representation of the inspection area.

One of the advantages of Dolphicam over other systems is the easy to use software that behaves like a smartphone app and requires very little training to operate. Combined with a touch-screen laptop, which is provided as part of the rental equipment, the system is incredibly quick to set up and start analysing defects in composites.

Following a brief familiarisation course, Paul says: “The ease with which the DolphiCam can be operated makes this the ideal instrument for our application; we do not need to employ a highly qualified NDT engineer, yet we are creating very high quality reports.”

Paul’s allegiance to Ashtead’s rental fleet is not limited to composite testing; he also hired an IPLEX TX videoscope, which has an ultra-thin probe that enabled him to find a fault in the pipework… of his home.

High performance WiFi antennas.

New high performance antenna technologies and systems for a wide variety of applications including both indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi, connected home, mobile computing, telematics and IoT applications has been announced by Antenna Company.

Their patented SuperShape® technology improves gain, efficiency, isolation, and coverage versus conventional embedded antenna designs on the market. Independent benchmark tests have shown SuperShape® antennas to increase range and throughput by 50 to 100% in both line of sight and non-line of sight test conditions. Using Antenna Company’s proprietary dielectric resonator design approach, the shape and size of the antennas can be tailored to meet custom demands of performance, system integration and cost.

For indoor Wi-Fi applications, high performance antennas provide superior radiation characteristics with greater efficiency and gain compared to conventional antennas. The company offers optimized dual-band and single band antenna systems for compact, embedded designs which require high levels of isolation between multiple antennas. Portable gas detector improved!

The PS200 portable gas detector from Tyco Gas & Flame Detection is now available with a new catalytic bead sensor option that provides an increased battery life of up to 80 hours in diffusion mode and 20 hours in pump mode.

Both lightweight and durable, the instrument is ideal for protection in hotworks and confined space applications. The PS200 monitors and displays up to 4 hazardous gas conditions simultaneously, detecting all possible combinations of Methane, Oxygen, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, and a wide range of flammable gases.

Operator interface and calibration are intuitive and easy by toggling between simple one-button functions. During normal operation the large LCD screen displays battery life and real-time gas concentrations, but when a hazardous condition occurs users are alerted by three alarm functions: vibration, red flashing LEDs, and audible buzzer. To ensure the highest level of personal safety, the PS200 is also fitted with an optional man down/motion sensor that activates alarms if the instrument is not moved within a pre-set time.

Other features include an optional built in remote sampling pump for confined space entry, manual backlight screen for poor lighting conditions, a customized user identification code setup, calibration due date display and standard datalogging that can be downloaded with a USB connection to a computer. Accessory components available separately include an Auto Bump and Calibration Station, a 5-instrument multi-charger and an assortment of colored boots/instrument covers.

Stainless steel coupling housing for connectors.

Harting has added a Han® 3A stainless steel coupling housing to its Han-INOX® connector series, featuring premium non-rusting stainless steel which makes it ideally suited for applications involving corrosive fluids.

Designed for use outdoors and in the harsh industrial environments found in the food and process industries, the Han-INOX® series is based on a modular design where the basic housing is combined with an extensive range of contacts covering applications from energy supply to data transfer.
Han-INOX® connectors are available in two sizes. The smaller Han® 3A version can be used for carrying both high currents - up to 40 A at 690 V - and sensitive data signals for Ethernet communications, for example. Even high-density contact inserts with 21 contacts are available for the small version of the Han-INOX® product.

The larger Han® 10B version allows the use of both standard contact inserts with up to 42 contacts and modules from Harting’s Han-Modular® system, currently comprising over 50 different modules and covering virtually all common industrial requirements. This means that combined connections can be made involving power, data, signals and/or compressed air.

HMIs for on- and offshore applications.

Stahl HMI Systems presents the latest generation of Panel PCs, specially designed for applications in the oil and gas industry. ATEX- and IECEx- certified, the new, powerful ET-498 and MT-498 series Panel PCs can be used in Zone 1, 21 and 2, 22 hazardous areas.

The new units are ideally suited for operating and monitoring operations around the rig floor, such as mud logging, MWD/LWD, rig instrumentation, or well stimulation. Optimised for onshore and offshore applications, they are extremely rugged with enhanced shock and vibration resistance. The powder-coated aluminium enclosures are IP66-rated and seawater-proof. With integrated heating, the Panel PCs ensure reliable operation even at extreme temperatures of -40 °C / -40 °F.

Microsoft honours industrial software developer.

COPA-DATA, took away not just one, but two awards at this year's Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Toronto (CDN). The solutions for Smart City with the zenon software won the worldwide Microsoft Partner award in the ‘Public Sector: Microsoft CityNext’ category. As a founding member of the isv4industry software alliance, the Salzburg-based company also reached first place as ‘Microsoft Partner of the Year’ in Austria.

Microsoft's top partners are honoured annually at the WPC. This year, the international expert jury assessed over 2,500 nominations from 119 countries. The finalists and winners were revealed in Toronto, Canada.

Gorenjske Elektrarne is a subsidiary of Elektro Gorenjska, one of Slovenia’s leading energy utility companies. It specialises in the development of power from renewable sources, including solar and hydroelectric power. For the last ten years Gorenjske Elektrarne has counted on zenon for its local control and monitoring system. Furthermore, zenon was established as a SCADA system for decentralised monitoring of a total of 23 photovoltaic plants, 15 hydroelectric power plants and three combined cycle plants across Slovenia. Combined cycle plants use gas and steam turbines to produce up to 50 per cent more electricity from the same fuel as a traditional single cycle plant.

The isv4industry alliance, founded in 2015, was awarded the Microsoft Partner of the Year award for Austria in its first year of existence. COPA-DATA is a founding member together with augmensys, icomedias and PROLOGICS. isv4industry aims to show industrial corporations the concrete value of the newest technological developments in existing infrastructures.

Developing SCADA standards.

ISA’s Standards & Practices (S&P) Board has approved a new committee to be designated ISA112, SCADA Systems. This approval follows widespread support for the idea from a survey conducted via ISA’s InTech magazine and online media.

ISA112 will develop standards and technical reports intended to improve the overall reliability of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system design, installation, integration and operation of the infrastructure for pipelines, water and wastewater, power, oil and gas, and other industries. The standards and technical reports will provide guidance for implementing effective and reliable SCADA systems by documenting best practices in a range of industries.

S&P Board member Greg Lehmann will serve as ISA112 managing director, overseeing the startup of the new committee by drawing on his experience as founding co-chair of ISA101, Human-Machine Interface. Lehmann is Process Automation Technical Manager, Engineering and O&M, Oil & Gas, at AECOM.

“Documenting best practices in a range of industries will likely end up being the lion’s share of the work in ISA112,” points out Lehmann. “However, the first order will be to focus on the basics and the multi-industry and inter-industry aspects of SCADA systems—that is, definitions, terminology, normative/informative references and common hardware.”

S&P Board Member Ian Verhappen, Senior Project Manager of Automation at CIMA, led the survey and analysis for the S&P Board. “With the increased connectivity of the wide range of devices used to monitor and control our environment, SCADA systems are becoming a more important part of today’s control infrastructure,” Verhappen notes. “For this reason, ISA has identified a requirement for a series of standards to capture best practices on how to build a system from the many individual parts.”

Partnership for emissions monitors.

Testo has appointed Ashtead Technology as platinum distributor for its portable emissions analysers, the Testo 340 and 350. As part of the agreement, Ashtead also becomes Testo’s Preferred Rental Partner for this equipment.

“We have been renting Testo emissions analysers for over 10 years and our team have built up a wealth of application and product knowledge. They are extremely popular items in our rental fleet, providing customers with the ability to monitor and improve process efficiency or to demonstrate environmental compliance, so we are delighted to be able to also offer them for sale,” says James Carlyle, Ashtead’s General Manager.

“It is standard practice at Ashtead for staff to be trained by our manufacturer suppliers, however, the expansion of our activity with Testo will mean that we will invest further in product and application knowledge for the Testo equipment. This also means that customers will be able to rent alternative instruments whilst their own equipment is unavailable for any reason.”

The Testo 350 portable flue gas analyser is a self-contained portable emissions analyser system that can be configured with up to 6 sensors for the measurement of gases including O2, CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, H2S and hydrocarbons in combustion emissions from engines, turbines, boilers, burners and other combustion sources.

By demonstrating compliance with the performance requirements of the Environment Agency’s MCERTS scheme, the Testo 350 is certified for the measurement of O2, CO, NO, NO2 and SO2. The Testo 350 weighs approximately 4.8kg and has automatic sample conditioning systems to provide representative samples from a range of combustion sources. The entire system operates independently on rechargeable batteries, or it can be connected to either AC or DC power (11 to 40V). A handheld control unit can operate the analyser ‘docked’ in the analyser unit or remotely from the base unit via a data cable or wireless Bluetooth connection.

The control unit provides the user with a simple interface and communications. By selecting options from brief menus, users are able to quickly configure the system and start monitoring. For example, the user is prompted to select the application (burner, turbine, engine or user-defined), the fuel type and the measurement type. Automatic programs for unattended operation facilitate remote, event driven, and/or long-term testing. A Bluetooth printer provides documentation of test results, an internal data logger records up to 250,000 data points, and internal calculations can be performed automatically.

In addition to gas concentrations the Testo 350 provides on-screen information such as O2 reference corrections, combustion efficiency, excess air, flow, mass-emissions and flue gas loss.

Summarising James Carlyle says: “Our objective is for emissions monitoring to be as simple, fast and efficient as possible. By offering the Testo analysers for both sale and hire, customers are able to select the option that best meets their needs and budget.

OPC-UA embedded in valve terminals.

Festo has embedded OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) into its valve terminals, enabling plant managers and engineers to realise the benefits of smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 principles. The valve terminals, which control factory and process automation and combine fluid and motion control, can now be seamlessly embedded in any Industry 4.0 host environment, supporting factories of the future.

OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) is an industrial machine-to-machine communication protocol for interoperability. It is the data exchange standard for safe, reliable, manufacturer and platform-independent industrial communication. Driven by the requirements of Industry 4.0 and the industrial IoT, many agree that OPC-UA is at the core of future industrial communication requirements, enabling the adoption of smart manufacturing.

The OPC-UA standard opens up Industry 4.0 connectivity and its potential advantages such as increased productivity, higher flexibility and more efficient operations. Festo will be integrating the OPC-UA technology into many more of its electrical controls in the coming years.

“As we move towards Industry 4.0, communication and engineering standards are absolutely critical. The vision of IoT can only be realised if the communication of the central components is based on a common standard that can fulfil its complex requirements,” says Steve Sands, product manager at Festo. “As OPC-UA is platform and operating system independent, it can provide an open communication solution from the front-end devices, sensors and actuators, or controllers right up to the cloud.”

All Festo’s valve terminals with CPX remote I/O can be extended to include an integrated CODESYS controller. This means that OPC-UA is an available option for Industry 4.0 host environments in all factory automation and process automation applications. OPC-UA is available with the CPX terminal, valve terminals CPX/MPA and CPX/VTSA (OPC UA server), compact controller CECC (OPC UA server) and display and operating unit CDPX (OPC UA client). Festo can also provide mechatronic subsystems as complete customer solutions incorporating OPC-UA.

OPC-UA is bringing industry much closer to true ‘plug and play’ functionality with seamless integration between components that can then talk to each other, so more data can be gathered and exchanged easily. Festo is confident that this standard is the way forward and has installed the principles at its new €70 million highly optimised and automated state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Scharnhausen, Germany.

“OPC-UA is a key standard and in the same way that Industry 4.0 is based on evolution not revolution, we expect to see OPC-UA grow and develop and will be embedding it in many of our products in the future,” concludes Steve.
