Gas analysis portfolio expanded by acquisition!

Sterling (Scotland) based Cascade Technologies Ltd., a leading manufacturer of gas analysers and monitoring systems using Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) technology has been acquired by Emerson. This innovative technology measures multiple gases simultaneously, helping companies improve industrial emissions monitoring, production efficiencies and environmental compliance.

Emerson is expanding its analytical measurement capabilities by adding this innovative laser technology to its Rosemount Analytical® gas analysis portfolio.  QCL technology provides a step change in gas analyser performance through its increased sensitivity, speed of response, and fingerprinting capability. These technology advancements in the gas analysis market space provide a powerful solution for customers in various industries such as petrochemical, food and beverage, marine, automotive and pharmaceutical. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

“The acquisition of Cascade Technologies is an exciting step as we further strengthen our gas analysis portfolio,” said Tom Moser, group vice president of Emerson Process Management’s measurement and analytical businesses. “Our customers depend upon Emerson to solve their toughest analytical measurement problems. We are now better positioned to serve that need.”

Dr. Iain Howieson, chief executive officer of Cascade Technologies Ltd., added, “Joining a global leader like Emerson represents an incredible opportunity for business growth. Emerson’s global presence and market leadership will have an immediate impact on the adoption of cutting edge QCL gas analysers and monitoring systems.”

The Perfect Combination - safety EX d & Ex e

Tailor-made Ex de solutions from Pepperl+Fuchs offer all the benefits of the Ex e and Ex d ignition protection classes in an ideal setup. These solutions are designed and built locally around the world in the company's Solution Engineering Centers, to customers' specific requirements.

Both Ex d and Ex e protection
Ex de solutions from Pepperl+Fuchs are essentially flameproof enclosures (Ex d) combined with Ex e enclosures, into which terminals and control elements are installed in line with customer specifications. Special cable ducts ensure that the two enclosures are securely connected. A flange between the enclosures ensures that the Ex e enclosure is protected against explosions and prevents dirt from settling or moisture from penetrating the device.

Components for measuring and control technology, or electrical installation technology, that are not specifically designed for areas posing a risk of explosion can be installed in the Ex d enclosure. In addition to isolated barriers or FieldConnex® fieldbus modules from Pepperl+Fuchs, these components may include DCS and ESD systems or other electrical components made to user specifications. The flameproof enclosure ensures that the non-hazardous devices do not pose a threat to the environment. In an ideal scenario, the Ex d enclosure will be opened as little as possible after initial installation, as special rules under IEC 60079-14 must be observed during opening and closing.

The Ex e enclosure underneath contains only components with separate Ex certification. This makes it much easier and safer to access within the system after activation than the Ex d enclosure. Terminals as well as control and monitoring elements can be serviced or replaced at any time, subject to compliance with the relevant provisions.

With Ex de, Pepperl+Fuchs is offering users the benefits of both ignition protection classes in a tailor-made solution. Ex de provides the ideal means of combining reliable protection for non-hazardous devices with the scope to commission and modify devices in a quick and simple process.

Business boom!

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) specialist, Autoscribe Ltd, believes that its continued growth is due in no small part to the pricing structure and configurability of its flagship Matrix Gemini LIMS.

In results announced for the most recent financial year, increased turnover in Great Britain was also accompanied by an increase in orders of more than 30% from the US office, with both operations reporting increased profitability. Autoscribe’s Managing Director, John Boother, said: “In a recent survey of our customers, ‘Value for money’ and ‘The ability to configure for any type of testing’ were the overwhelming reasons given for choosing our Matrix Gemini products.”

“The company has shown sustained growth over the two most recent financial years, and even more encouragingly, we are already seeing a further UK business growth of close to 30% in the current financial year,” he continued. “Not only that, our work in progress (awaiting invoicing) is also at a record high. The increases in order intake and profitability represent an excellent return following a significant period of investment, particularly in the US organisation.”

“Product and pricing benefits are only part of the story, however,” he concluded. “We also understand the importance of the relationship between our sales team and our customers. The customer survey also showed that 87% of purchasers rated our sales team at 8/10 or better with more than 50% of these giving them a score of 10/10.”
