High-performance filter with switch or fuse.

The high-performance filter series FN 9262 (with fuse holder) and FN 9266 (with dual pole switch), have been developed by Shaffner for applications demanding high RFI attenuation performance.
They represent an enhanced version of the already market proven FN 9260 and FN 9264 filter families. One of the key applications for this filter is the medical market and the filter carries additional approvals making it easier for the end users to implement into their designs. FN 9262 B and FN 9266 B (B-types) filters meet the insulation requirements according to IEC 60601-1 1MOPP (1 means of patient protection).

Both filter series outperform the existing filters FN 9260 and FN 9264 over the whole frequency range. This increased performance lies in two key components: the advanced core material (common mode performance) and the increased X-capacitor values (differential mode performance).

The housing dimensions are identical to the existing series making an exchange between the filters simple. In addition, the PEMs (Power Entry Modules) are mechanically compatible with almost all similar style products in the market and the same as the FN 9260 and FN 9264.

With the new variant diversity (FN 9260/2/4/6) and the present attenuation properties, this filter family offers a solution for medical devices, and modern appliances for household, audio and video. They can also be used in other applications with similar requirements.

The filters have all the required safety approvals (UL 60939-3, CSA C22.2 No. 8, IEC 60939-3 and CQC), they carry a CE mark and are compatible with the RoHS II (2015/863) directive.

Basic rugged indicators.

Interfaces for industry modular storage systems.

The Commeo GmbH from Wallenhorst near Osnabrück  (D) has developed a modular energy storage system that allows applications, from mobile robots to the power supply for industrial plants and factories, to run securely and uninterrupted. The Commeo units can be used as an emergency power supply or as a mains buffer to provide compensating power when required.

In a joint project, Commeo and Harting have developed suitable interfaces for the new system by interconnecting the batteries in a particularly efficient way with downstream units. The solution consists of integrating modules from the Han-Modular® series and the Han® Docking Frame into one unit. The interface for supplying power and data can be quickly placed into the energy storage blocks, whilst the housing for the modules is recessed in the block interior with the mating side protruding centrally from the back of the block.

The Commeo system consists of energy storage blocks that have a side length of more than 20 cm, containing multiple layers of lithium-ion cells. The blocks are responsive via a bus system and are aggregated into industrial storage cabinets. Each block has its own battery management system (BMS). On the top floor of each storage cabinet is the Commeo control unit ccuHV. The two-metre high standard version of the cabinet offers space for 48 blocks. The local control unit communicates via CAN bus with each individual block and the downstream control components.

The layout of the storage block cabinets consisting of 1.5 kWh modules (in 48 V systems) permits the exact battery capacity to be reproduced or replaced as needed. The risk of overdimensioning or underdimensioning does not exist, as the efficiency of the system can be corrected afterwards. Here, the system can easily be scaled from a few KWh to more than 1 MWh. “We can add more cabinets and our battery blocks also fit in other industrial enclosures, for example, wall-mount cabinets that can be placed in small places”, said CEO Michael Schnakenberg.

Today, Commeo battery systems already safeguard the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of industrial parks or protect electrically powered systems against damage caused by fluctuations in the mains. They provide compensating voltage for renewable power generation plants and act as a buffer to the mains: when voltage is too high, they charge current and have a load-relieving effect; when a voltage drop occurs, they can feed in their storage contents. As a result, they cushion peak loads. In other projects, the Commeo storage blocks back up the power supply of industrial robots or they are applied to district electricity projects.

Commeo targets its product portfolio primarily to the mechanical and plant engineering sectors. “Our goal is to set up batteries in a modular system that is tailor-made for very special needs. We would like to be the first system provider for high-performance storage solutions in the world of automation, process industry and manufacturing”, added Michael Schnakenberg. According to Schnakenberg, Harting was the favoured supplier as it was important to have a suitable interface for this project. “The recognition factor of Harting connectors in the industrial environment is a factor. Our customers know as soon as they see these interfaces that our batteries are compatible with their other facilities.”

Thanks to the cooperation with Commeo, the application range for Han® interfaces has widened in the markets of energy generation, storage and distribution. “Our pluggable connectors have performed well in the entire sector with efficient and robust solutions for the generation, storage and distribution of energy. This ranges from the wiring of wind farms through connectivity solutions for gas and storage power plants to the suitable interfaces for E-Mobility, everything coming from one source”, says Andras Meszaros, Industrial Segment Manager Energy at HartingElectric.

Multi-gas monitor on- and off-shore.

The BM25 from Oldham-Simtronics, part of 3M Gas & Flame Detection, is a rugged multi-gas area monitor designed to ensure safety in hazardous environments.

Testimony to this fact can be provided by Al Masaood Oil & Gas, which following its formation in 1971, became one of the first oil and gas suppliers and contractors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al Masaood has supplied around 800 BM25 portable gas detectors into a host of onshore and offshore projects, including 200 of the latest-generation wireless models. The company acquires the units directly from Oldham-Simtronics.

“We selected the BM25 because we can trust and depend on its performance in the harsh environments in which we operate” states Ammar Maarouf, Department Manager, Airloop & H2S Safety Services, Al Masaood Oil & Gas. “The BM25’s robust construction and intelligent design make it one of the best detectors to be deployed in applications where area monitoring is a critical part of the safety system.”

The BM25 was designed for team protection or area surveillance, and is ideally suited to perimeter monitoring, rig overhauls, and mobile or short-term work where fixed detection systems are not practical. Providing the capability to monitor one-to-five gases simultaneously, the BM25 packs the benefits of a fixed area monitor into a rugged, user-friendly and transportable instrument; a factor that has long-appealed to Al Masaood.

Around 10 years after the introduction of the first-generation BM25, the monitor continues to be the tried and trusted go-to solution within the transportable gas detection market.

With over 900 employees, Abu Dhabi-based Al Masaood Oil & Gas provides advanced energy services into upstream and downstream operations. Its Air Loop & H2S Safety business unit also supplies, calibrates and services various application-specific products across the UAE, including portable gas monitors, for both sales-based and rental-based projects.

“Provide us with a challenge and we'll find the right solution,” says Mr Maarouf. “Portable gas detection and area monitoring has been a key competency for many years, and here we rely on various solutions from 3M Gas & Flame Detection, including the PS200 multi-gas detector, as well as the BM25.”

Up to five gases can be monitored simultaneously using the BM25; interchangeable sensors are available for AsH3, CO, CO2, H2, HCl, HCN, NO2, NH3, O2, PH3, SiH4 and SO2. When the BM25 detects a hazardous level of gas, the top-mounted beacon sends a flashing, bright signal in all directions while emitting a powerful, 103dB siren alarm.

“The standard BM25 can send alarms via alarm transfer cables, however, the latest-generation BM25 Wireless sends alarms, faults and readings using a 2.4GHz wireless signal,” explains Mr Maarouf. “This set-up can create a safety perimeter around a detected atmospheric hazard, or transmit a manually initiated emergency signal over a wide area.”

Powered by a NiMH battery pack, the BM25 multi-gas monitor offers up to 170 hours of continuous run time. Other standard features include STEL (short-term exposure limit) and TWA (time-weighted average) values, as well as a data-logging capacity of more than four months.

The BM25 Wireless provides networking and communication to the Oldham-Simtronics MX40 controller, which centralises the data and can display up to 32 measurements in real time. When a BM25 signals an alarm, the MX40 also goes into alarm mode and can, for example, control internal relays and order other monitors to transmit the alarm as well. The control panel displays real-time gas concentrations, field device status, battery levels, network RF signal quality and fault diagnostic conditions.

“To date we’ve supplied around 200 BM25 Wireless gas detectors,” says Mr Maarouf. “In fact, I think we were the first in our region to offer them. Our customers love the simplicity and the speed in which they can be deployed to keep workers safe.”

The Oldham-Simtronics BM25 Wireless can be used as a stand-alone monitor or linked into a mesh network to provide gas detection over a large area. The mesh network allows peer-to-peer connection with all other units in the network to send, receive and relay data. As a result, detectors can communicate around obstructions and alter communication paths should a monitor be removed for recharging or servicing. A total of 30 BM25 Wireless units may be meshed together in a single network, while up to 16 independent networks can co-exist without interference.

“We have used the BM25 and BM25 Wireless for so many years because they offer five-gas capability and are compact and extremely reliable in comparison with competitor units,” states Mr Maarouf. “We also like the excellent connectivity of the BM25 Wireless unit, which offers added-value for our clients as there is no need to use transfer cables for the alarm. A good stock of detectors is maintained at Al Masaood so that we can respond quickly to customer requirements.”

With 14,000 units in operation worldwide, BM25 multi-gas detectors are technologically capable and highly proven devices. This latter point is particularly important in safety-critical oil and gas applications, where any failure to detect dangerous gases could have disastrous consequences.

Bigger and brighter HMI.

New 12.1” Outdoor Graphite HMI to meet the most demanding sunlight readable applications

Red Lion Controls have released an addition to their Graphite® series of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). The new 12.1” Outdoor Graphite HMI meets the most demanding sunlight readable applications. With all cast-aluminum construction, the Graphite series provides the industry’s first rugged HMI solution to combine a wide range of versatile plug-in modules with protocol conversion, data logging and web-based monitoring and control.

Tough trigger switch!

A new miniature trigger switch for heavy duty control applications including industrial and domestic power tools has been introduced by Omron Electronic Components Europe. Its innovative design delivers exceptional dust, shock and vibration resistance within a very small overall size.
Commenting, Andries de Bruin, Senior European Product Marketing Manager at Omron said, “Omron is leading the way with a control switch that meets the needs of the new generation of brushless DC power tools enabling small overall size, protection against demanding environments and a high power output while withstanding vibration. The C3AW is one of the smallest solutions on the market offering this level of environmental protection.” He continued, “Omron manufactures this new switch using a fully automatic assembly process, guaranteeing the highest quality of production.”

Ideal for all types of brushless DC applications including industrial equipment as well as cordless DC power and gardening tools, the new Omron C3AW is a highly durable and compact solution. Rated at 10mA, 42VDC, the C3AW achieves dust resistance to IEC IP6x through with a sealed rubber cover over the moving parts and an ultrasonic welded connection between the cover cases. It can withstand shocks of up to 3000 m/s2 and vibration of up to 200 m/s2 experiencing no more than 100µs of chattering at the maximum rated shock level.

With an overall size of just 25mm wide by 13.5mm deep by 28.5mm high, the C3AW is rated for at least 300,000 operations. It can be used at temperatures between -20 and +65ºC.

The LT8708 is a high-performance buck-boost switching regulator controller which supports bidirectional power conversion in battery/capacitor back-up systems. With a wide 2.8V-80V input and 1.3V-80V output range, the LT8708 offers automotive system designers great flexibility: it may be used to regulate the input or output current in both forward and reverse directions, or the input or output voltage. The device’s flexibility also extends to the selection of power-conversion modes: discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), continuous conduction mode (CCM), hybrid conduction mode (HCM) and Burst Mode® operation may all be selected via the MODE pin.

The award was presented to Shalini Palmer, Analog Devices’ EMEA Sales Director for Mobility, at the 2019 Electronics Industry Awards event (London, 21 June).
