Proximity sensor shaft calibration.

Metrix’s newly announced 9060-SCTS shaft calibration system pairs with the industrial condition monitoring system manufacturer’s Digital Proximity System (DPS) and associated Metrix hardware to enable custom shaft calibration in the field even when shaft material is not known. Available with full support in Britain from Ixthus Instrumentation, the 9060-SCTS (Shaft Calibrator Touch Select) is used to adjust the gap in pre-set micron level increments for calibrating proximity probe systems and thanks to the powerful DPS software, allows the user to change the configuration.

The Metrix DPS combines the performance of a fully API 670 compliant eddy-current proximity measurement system with the flexibility of digital configurability. The field-configurable measurement system for position, radial vibration and speed is well proven where critical plant equipment such as motors, compressors, pumps and other rotating machines or piston based machines need to be closely monitored for optimal reliability. Typical systems for use with the DPS comprise a digital proximity transducer, interfacing cable and a choice of signal conditioner - available as a driver for a machinery protection system or as a transmitter with a 4-20 mA signal to a PLC/DCS or SCADA system.

Together with the latest free-of-charge software version of the Metrix DPS, the 9060-SCTS is used to determine the actual proximity probe system output in mV/mil or mV/μm of a machine shaft or piston rod. Comprising a self-aligning cradle and a precision ‘micrometer head’ that positions the inserted proximity sensor under test in fixed 200 micron or 0.010” increments, the system measures output at these fixed increments and is capable of ‘straight-line’ re-calibration where material properties are not known. In this way the complete DPS system is capable of supporting a multitude of older probe systems, cable lengths, and target materials with just a single device.

The 9060-SCTS is compatible with 5 to 22 mm probe tip diameters and with a special adapter plate works with reverse mount probes. For ease of use, the displacement is adjusted by twisting a gap adjustment ring and feeling for set ‘clicks’ that correspond to the required probe calibration increments. After each increment is completed the DPS software, which has probe characteristics and part number recognition built-in, is manually commanded to record the output value. An adjusting strap allows the mounting adapter to fit on shafts from 25 mm up to 300 mm diameter. The shaft calibrator is manufactured in composite plastic material that does not affect probe sensitivity.

Safe & fast predictive maintenance!

By using the capacity of cloud-based software to combine the real-time and historical data from Fluke Connect™-enabled tools and sensors, Fluke now enables maintenance engineers and managers to monitor a comprehensive picture of equipment health throughout the facility. The introduction of condition monitoring products that wirelessly transmit data from the field, combined with Fluke Connect Condition Monitoring (FCCM) software, has enabled safe, cost-effective maintenance programs.
Maintenance teams can remotely detect potential equipment failures and remedy them before they cause costly downtime. Predictive maintenance is now not only simplified, but it is safer and faster.

Monitoring all plant equipment can be difficult, especially when working with shrinking budgets and limited personnel. Quite often, critical equipment in commercial and industrial settings may display symptoms that indicate a future failure, but those indications go undetected. While many critical pieces of equipment may have fixed monitoring systems, many other important assets, such as pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, motors and blowers, may not be monitored and can require an extra level of monitoring to identify intermittent events. For this less critical, but still essential equipment, it isn’t always possible to catch events before they result in failure or downtime. This is where condition monitoring can help.

Fluke’s latest condition monitoring systems are easy to install and move around. They are changing the way the industrial world performs maintenance activities with portable, wireless sensors and connectivity gateways - a versatile system that a team can easily move around a plant. This technology enables teams to continuously monitor assets, so they can log vibration, electrical and temperature data from anywhere in a facility. The measurements can be monitored via real-time alarms sent to a phone or other mobile device. By correlating historical trends and tracking current conditions, faults can be detected, and equipment uptime increased.

Fluke has introduced two new condition monitoring products that alert maintenance team members to abnormalities before they cause equipment failures. The new Fluke™ 3561 FC Vibration Sensor is quick and easy to install and allows maintenance teams to improve uptime by adding remote, continuous vibration monitoring to virtually any rotating equipment. Vibration data from the 3561 FC is wirelessly transmitted via a Fluke 3502 FC Gateway to Fluke ConnectTM Condition Monitoring (FCCM) software allowing maintenance teams to remotely monitor asset health anytime and virtually anywhere, whether on the desktop or a smart device. The new Fluke 3540 FC Three-Phase Power Monitor is a portable device offering a scalable, remote power monitoring solution. Current, voltage, frequency, and energy consumption fluctuate when machinery experiences excess load. The Fluke 3540 FC monitors equipment for changes in key electrical variables, thus assets can be screened for performance, premature wear, or power cleanliness.

Easy access to Industry 4.0.

Aegis Software has announced the unique combination of critical technologies of IIoT connectivity and supply chain optimization that enables the market catch up on business goals related to Industry 4.0.

Industry 4.0 has been evolving for some time, though many companies continue to experience declining productivity as product-mix increases. Two fundamental issues preventing the establishment and growth of Industry 4.0 have been identified, and now resolved.

Firstly, unlike other MES, PLM & MOM solutions, that are founded upon a code-base dating back many years prior to IIoT technology, the unique Aegis FactoryLogix digital MES platform has been specifically developed as an IIoT platform, and is the first to support the IPC Connected Factory Exchange (CFX) IIoT standard. With machines reporting consistent, fully detailed data, FactoryLogix provides contextual qualification, through a combination of visibility across all machines and processes, creating a meaningful live view of manufacturing that aids advanced manual and automated decision-making, as well as edge-based data preparation for transfer to the cloud, avoiding the issue of “digital landfill”. With the impediment of lack of operational data quality resolved, today’s high-mix and demand-volatile assembly factory can now retain world-class productivity levels, with the ability to adapt and re-optimize at a moment’s notice.

With the digital MES and IIoT platform established in assembly, the second impediment to Industry 4.0 is the extension of such flexibility to the supply-chain. Aegis FactoryLogix provides perfect accuracy of material accountability and predicted consumption, which is now used to drive Just In Time (JIT) material flow management, back to material suppliers and distributors. CircuitByte’s BOMConnector product is used by both material purchasing and EMS quotation teams, to automatically discover and select, through internet-based services, the most cost effective, quality, and available materials available within heavily constrained lead-times, ensuring customer-driven demand change requirements can be met without risk. Together with data from FactoryLogix, BOMConnector allows purchasing to react to the need for urgent material requirements, as well as cope with potential material shortages in the market, providing the necessary supply-chain flexibility enhancement to ERP and MRP, making Industry 4.0 possible.

Anyone considering a current or future Smart Industry 4.0 project, establishing practical digital manufacturing and supply-chain “best practices”, must first understand the most significant step forward in terms of IIoT available for everyone, and the realization of Supply-Chain 4.0.

Detect temperatures using direct media contact.

Balluff is expanding their range of sensors for media-contacting temperature detection, in hydraulic power units for example. New are a temperature sensor with display, a temperature transmitter as well as a PT1000 sensor .The version without display is especially compact and vibration-resistant, whereas the versions with the turnable and highly readable display offers high operating convenience and flexible installation.

Depending on the version, the BFT sensors provide PNP switching outputs, analog signals 0-10V or 4-20mA or work as a PT1000 sensor. They are simple to install by threading into the process using a standard process connection with G- and NPT threads. Integrating them requires just a 4-pin M12 plug on the sensor.

Continuous monitoring of process media on machines and equipment contributes greatly to process security. Values that need to be maintained are pressure, level and temperature. When for example in a hydraulic system you need to monitor the temperature of the hydraulic fluid, you can do this reliably using our BFT media-contacting temperature sensors. Monitoring the temperature within the hydraulic loop guarantees correct fluid viscosity and thereby the best performance of a machine. Critical process conditions such as a temperature limit can be controlled directly via the switching output. An analog output provides continuous measurement results. The BFT temperature sensors also stand out when it comes to monitoring the cooling water, lubricants and compressed air, making them ideal for a variety of applications.

Analytical instrumentation and LIMS.

The new MIDAS (Matrix Instrument Data Acquisition System) module for the Matrix Gemini LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) from Autoscribe Informatics improves on the existing methods of interfacing of a wide variety of analytical instruments and equipment to Matrix Gemini. Direct entry of results data into Matrix Gemini provides higher levels of automation, eliminates transcription errors and improves laboratory efficiency.

By recording measurement data at the point that it is generated, MIDAS helps meet data integrity and validity requirements, for example as defined by the acronym ALCOA (attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original and accurate). Automated data capture also simplifies the result review and approval process. Any need to manipulate data in third party packages such as Excel is eliminated. MIDAS provides a defendable, robust and effective methodology to ensure compliance with standards such as ISO17025 and GxP.

Many laboratory instruments are able to output result files, usually in the form of a CSV or text file. Running in the background, MIDAS monitors the creation of these files and imports results directly into Matrix Gemini LIMS when a new file is detected. This includes result files based on worksheets created by the Matrix Gemini worksheet functionality. Relevant data is extracted from the instrument file, and associated with the correct data in Matrix Gemini LIMS Results are automatically checked against relevant specification limits as the data is imported.

The MIDAS module is available for all Matrix Gemini LIMS customers and, like Matrix itself, may be configured either by Autoscribe Informatics or by the users. In this way, Matrix Gemini LIMS users can setup or modify instrument interfaces themselves allowing them to easily adapt to changing operational needs in a timely and cost-effective way.

Communicating VA meter!

The functionality of the Foundation Fieldbus (FF) module for Krohne's H250 M40 variable area flowmeter has been updated from Interoperability Test Kit 5.2 (ITK 5.2) to ITK 6.3. The new version has been tested and registered with the FieldComm Group, and has also passed the stress test on a DeltaV control system.

Since the introduction of the FF interface in 2012, several thousand devices have been put into operation. Customers who would like to update existing H250 M40 FF devices to ITK 6.3 can do so by ordering a new ITK 6.3 module and simply change it in the field without removing the device from the pipeline. As it is only a new firmware, all 32 international Ex approvals of H250 M40 are still applicable.

With ITK 6.3, NE107 compliant diagnostic messages have been implemented, and execution times of the function blocks have been significantly improved so that more devices can be polled for a given schedule (total cycle time of the bus system). It is possible to operate FF ITK 5.2 and ITK 6.3 devices simultaneously in one system. Each version requires its own driver (CFF/ DD/ DTM), which must be installed once per device type.

• Krohne products are marketed in Ireland through DWN Instrumentation.

PushPull metric circular connector.

Harting has launched a new M12 PushPull metric circular connector solution that is compatible with the needs of factory automation applications. The new connector adds the benefits of fast and easy handling to the existing advantages of PushPull locking technology in a “Plug&Produce” approach to sensor or control installation.

The entire field of circular connectors is in transition. Manufacturers of connection technology are taking great strides towards tool-free PushPull locking techniques. Now, as part of ongoing standardisation efforts - which Harting is actively promoting - the push is on to find suitable universal standards for M12 PushPull interlocks. These create investment security for the customer and meet the requirements of the M12 as a familiar, standardised interface.

While previous solutions have snapped into place on the outside on protruding sockets with a characteristic ‘click’, the first steps have been taken on the road to M12 PushPull sockets which feature internal locking and which can be installed in very flat configurations without an outer collar - one of the key requirements of the automation industry.

More and more manufacturers of industrial connection technology rely on time-saving and easy-to-use PushPull concepts for their connectors. In this context, the classic screw lock of the M12 circular connector is becoming an annoying time-waster when it comes to mounting numerous interfaces. In a direct comparison of M12 PushPull to the familiar screw locking arrangement, the new locking technology can be connected some 75% faster.

In response to this trend, Harting entered the rail market segment just under three years ago with an M12 PushPull solution. In the interim, the Harting solution has become an established solution that is specially tailored to the needs of railway users.

Similar requirements have become increasingly apparent in some areas within the automation sector, offering the benefits of simple and safe operation, acoustic feedback, and time and cost savings. Harting is now meeting these demands and is actively promoting the standardisation of a comprehensive M12 PushPull market standard. The eventual aim is a single IEC 61076-2-010 standard that will provide one comprehensive solution for transportation and one for factory automation, creating investment security for users.

Safe fun at the fair! !

Force Engineering, based near Loughborough (GB), develops and manufactures customised Linear Induction Motor (LIM) based motion systems, serving a wide base of industries with applications as diverse as medical scanning equipment and baggage handling conveyors.

As a world leading expert and innovator in the field of LIM technology, a large part of Force Engineering’s activities centres on the amusement ride industry - adding heightened levels for thrill-seekers through ride launch and in-ride acceleration to 1.2 g, and equally rapid braking performance along roller coaster tracks. To help ensure the extreme levels of electrical safety and performance required for these high power systems which typical run from very high current three-phase supplies, Force Engineering embed temperature controls in its LIM winding assemblies and has chosen Variohm EuroSensor as its main supplier of customised wiring harnesses that include glass encapsulated NTC thermistors configured as temperature probe assemblies.

Fully sealed in copper tube housings
The special temperature probes are similar to standard components available as stock items from Variohm EuroSensor, however with 10K3976 series thermistors which offer a higher temperature range and stability specification than the standard probe. With the NTC chip encapsulated in hermetically sealed glass packages, these thermistors - which are supplied to Variohm from TE Connectivity, the global sensor and measurement systems company - are in turn encapsulated and fully sealed in copper tube housings by Variohm EuroSensor.

    Stainless steel housing
The 10K3976 glass thermistor has a temperature range of -40 to +250 ⁰C and is specified in applications where a fast time response is required at high levels of thermal shock. Three special probes are each wired with different length leadwires and coloured insulated, all finished with rubber shrink-sleeving. Additional cabling, without thermistors, is also included in the harness to facilitate straightforward assembly into the LIM’s manufactured by Force Engineering.

Whilst Variohm stocks and supplies a comprehensive range of glass or epoxy coated thermistors with NTC and PT sensors as components, the specialist sensor manufacturer has developed many standard products like the probes for Force Engineering as convenient assemblies that may be integrated directly into the customer’s application.

    Variohm’s ETP series temperature probes
These assemblies take the form of electrical ring terminals, hexagonal bolts and pipe clamps as well as cylindrical probes finished in PTFE, stainless steel, brass and other materials. These assemblies for instance help power amplifier manufacturers directly sense chassis or heatsink temperature through ring terminal probes. In this way the customer can overcome the potential problems of handling and installing tiny NTC or PT type temperature sensor, reduces components and suppliers from more streamlined production and reduces maintenance.

In addition to specialist temperature probe assemblies, Variohm also includes customised production by transforming other components from its wide range of sensors for linear and rotary position, pressure, load/force, and vibration etc. Modifications can range from alternative electrical connection or a modified mounting arrangement to integrating sensors with significant redesigns or combining multiple sensor technologies and other electromechanical components as fully tested sub-assemblies.
