Analytical transmitter.

The Liquiline compact CM82 transmitter has been announced by Endress + Hauser.

This transmitter accepts pH, ORP, pH/ORP, conductivity, oxygen and chlorine sensor signals from their Memosens® sensor platform. Its housing measures only 11 cm long and 2 cm wide, so even combined with the sensor, it fits into almost every assembly. Although small, it is a fully developed multiparameter transmitter, with access available via 4-20mA HART, or Bluetooth from any iOS or Android device.

Connectable to the CM82 are pH, ORP, pH/ORP, conductivity, oxygen and chlorine sensors with the blue Memosens inductively-coupled plug-in head. The Memosens technology ensures 100% reliable data transmission, with true plug-and-play and pre-calibrated sensors.

When a CM82 measuring point is configured, all settings are saved in the compact CM82 transmitter. In the case of a sensor exchange, the transmitter - and thus the measuring point configuration – can remain in place, with reconfiguration not necessary. In addition, the CM82 reads all sensor and calibration data stored in the head of a Memosens sensor. As a result, the sensor is automatically detected within seconds, and the measurement is immediately ready for use after a sensor change.

As a loop-powered two-wire device, the CM82 can be connected directly to a control component, such as a programmable logic controller (PLC), which also serves as the power supply, thus eliminating the need for a power cable. A cable for the sensor connection is also not necessary because the sensor plugs directly into the transmitter. The measuring point’s required space and wiring effort are thus minimal.

As with all other Endress+Hauser Bluetooth devices, the Liquiline compact CM82 can be operated and configured via the free SmartBlue app, which is available on Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store. Using the app, users can see all the measuring points on their tablet or smartphone. Special attention was paid to security: The Bluetooth connection is protected with the same technology that guards identity cards against unauthorized access by third parties. This high security level was confirmed by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC).

DIN-Rail power supply.

PULS Power has announced the availability of the PIC480.241C single phase input 24V, 20A output power supply. An extension of the market-leading PIANO-Series this cost-oriented power supply is just 49mm wide freeing-up maximum rail space for functional system modules.

The PIC480.241C features input transient protection, output over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection (output shut-down with automatic restart) and electronic output protection against overload, no-load and short-circuits.

As most typical industrial applications do not require multiple mains input voltages, the implementation of a regional input voltage range (200-240VAC) simplifies the circuitry and has significant advantages for reliability, efficiency and cost.

The addition of a DC-OK signal, with optional isolated contacts, makes the unit suitable for many industrial applications including: instrumentation, process, automation and other critical applications where preventive function monitoring can help to avoid long downtimes or damage.

The distance values have a high accuracy and are not influenced by the reflectance of the object. Valves for LNG industry.

Emerson has announced that it has acquired Advanced Engineering Valves (A.E. Valves). The transaction will enable them to provide their customers with the world’s broadest portfolio of valves to improve process performance and reliability. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Obsolete PSUs?

Powerstax offers users of legacy equipment and those involved with repair or refurbishment of critical or capital systems form-fit-and-function replacement power supplies incorporating the latest technology and providing major increases in reliability and efficiency.

A recent example involved the recommissioning of an ion implant system used in semiconductor device fabrication. Replacing the over 20-year-old power supplies without the need to modify the system chassis or control systems required a custom designed power supply.

The replacement product supplied made use of a modern high efficiency AC-DC “brick” module with an additional current limit circuit and an external output voltage adjustment circuit via a 10-turn potentiometer fitted to the front plate to allow it to function exactly as the original power supply. The new power supply has a 90-253 VAC universal input allowing the original input voltage select link to be removed and provides an output of 48VDC @ 7.5A.

Scanning assembly!

The Ricoh SC-10 camera inspection system is designed to both provide assembly instructions to operators and verify each step has been completed correctly. The simple, self-contained camera system is having a major impact in many different manufacturing environments in Japan is now available in Europe through Stemmer Imaging.


Typical functionality includes:
• Checking the presence of the correct number of parts necessary for assembly
• Checking the arrangement of similar parts
• Checking whether work is progressing according to work instructions displayed on the monitor
• Checking for missing parts on mounted assemblies
• Checking all of the assembled products/parts for mistakes in installation
• Visual checking to eliminate human error, saving labour rework costs
• Confirm whether packed items of the product are bundled according to the instructions
A set of work instructions are loaded into the camera and displayed on a monitor while the camera scans the work piece. The human operator follows the on-screen assembly instructions and after every action the system compares the result to the correct stored image before the next step can be taken. This reduces errors, helps operators learn new tasks and provides a digital audit trail of all operations.

The RICOH SC - 10 series automatically checks the assembly status and identifies incorrect or missing items by using either pattern matching, colour verification or identifying the presence of textures. In addition, when used in conjunction with a Barcode scanner it can record the part number and select the job instruction set, record the serial number and user ID. Each step completed is recorded in a CSV file including the time spent and an optional image of the inspection can be saved. This means that it can be used for assembly work analysis and traceability.

The camera features in-built software, which can be set up with a directly attached mouse and keyboard via USB. An HDMI monitor can be connected to display the assembly instructions and inspection state. No PC is required. Job configuration and instruction along with the inspection audit report can be stored either on the inbuilt SD card or on a network storage location via the inbuilt Ethernet port.

The Ricoh SC-10 is available in a standard and high magnification versions. The addition of the high magnification lens allows smaller parts to be inspected, for example on PCBs, and the inspection of a wider field of view.

Still nobody knows!

When the results of the referendum were announced in 2016 the implications were not apparant, to anybody, least of all to those who sought to disentangle the British state from the European Union.

Forty three years of constructive involvement in the development of this unique entity were to be cast aside. It seemed simple enough but as things progressed it seemed less and less easy to see how this could be done in an orderly fashion. How would standards developed under the auspices of the Union fare as they are developed and improved after Britain leaves with British involvement peripheral at best.

We watch aghast at the happenings in the British parliament and the lack of disciplined compromise which is arguable the great strength of true democracy. Ruefully may we recall that this has been styled the Mother of Parliaments.

We feel ruefully that the words of Mr Jean Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission (Administration of the EU), which we noted in the Summer/Autumn 2016 issue of Read-out are still unfortunately relevant and true. "I thought they had a plan!"

It is indeed disheartening that we still have no idea what is going to happen. There are three possibilities.

  1. The agreement hammered out between the British Government and the other twenty seven members of the union.
  2. No agreement - and Britain falls out of European Union.
  3. Withdrawal from the decision to leave (Paragraph 50).

Those choices must be made by 28th March 2019.

Uncertainty follows all of these uncertain choices.

Guides to Circuit Board Hardware.

Essentra Components have produced two new guides for electronics design and production engineers to assist in the selection and use of PCB hardware components. Humidity & moisture transmitters.

The high-end EE310 and EE360 industrial transmitters from E+E Elektronik are now available with stainless steel or with polycarbonate enclosure. The EE310 humidity and temperature transmitter is dedicated for demanding industrial processes control. The EE360 measures the moisture content of industrial oils and thus enables predictive maintenance of machines and plants.

Both devices feature an optional 3.5" TFT color display, which offers an optimal view of the measured values and facilitates the commissioning and configuration. The built-in data logger can save 20,000 values per measurand. The recorded data can be displayed as a graph directly on the display or downloaded via USB interface for further analysis.

The measured data is available on two analogue outputs and on the optional digital interface (RS485 with Modbus RTU or Ethernet with Modbus TCP). An optional relay module can be used for alarms and process control.

The enclosure design facilitates installation and maintenance. The front cover, which accommodates the electronics and the probe, can be replaced within seconds, while the wiring inside the back cover remains intact.

The EE310 measures relative humidity and temperature in the range -40 °C…180 °C ( 40...356 °F) and calculates further physical quantities such as dew point temperature, absolute humidity or mixing ratio. The transmitter is available for duct or wall mount, as well as with remote probes.

The EE360 measures water activity and temperature and calculates the absolute water content of transformer, lubrication and hydraulic oil, as well as of diesel fuel. The sensing probe can be employed up to 180 °C (356 °F) and 20 bar (290 psi). The ISO or NPT slide fitting and the optional ball valve facilitate the installation.

Creates 3D data really quickly!

The Ensenso XR stereo camera from IDS can calculate 3D point clouds itself. Afterwards, it transmits the data via Gigabit Ethernet or WiFi to a host PC for further analysis. The advantages of the new camera series include, for example, significantly faster 3D data generation and reduced load on bandwidth and connected PCs.

Models of the Ensenso N and X series make use of an industrial computer to calculate 3D point clouds. Since Ensenso XR cameras can handle the calculations themselves and transmit only the results, 3D data can be generated twice as fast, depending on the parameterization. Another advantage of the new camera series is that if data is transmitted via WiFi, only one cable (for power supply) needs to be connected to the camera. This is an advantage, for example, if the camera is installed on a robot arm.

"Ensenso XR inherits the modular concept and precise detail capture of the X series and provides new scope through the fast capture of 3D point clouds, from which many applications will benefit," explains Dr. Martin Hennemann, Product Manager Ensenso at IDS.

The model presented at the trade show is similar in terms of field of view and resolution to the Ensenso X series with 1.3 MP sensors and can precisely detect both entire pallets and small objects. For the detection of a packed Euro pallet measuring 120 cm × 80 cm × 100 cm, the Z accuracy was just under 1 mm at a camera distance of approximately two metres. For the start of the Ensenso XR series in spring 2019, two variants with uEye CP and uEye FA industrial cameras (protection code IP65/67) with 1.6 MP and 5 MP sensors are planned.

Contactless detection.

Omron Electronics Components Europe is addressing the growing demand for contactless position and presence detection in industrial machinery, office automation and similar applications with the launch of a new range of exceptionally compact surface mount photo-microsensors.

The new Omron EE-SX3173 and EE-SX4173 are just 13.6 x 14.7 x 8.3mm making them one of the most compact solutions for this application on the market. The devices feature a 5mm slot width and are offered with 5V or 24V DC drive. The 5V DC version is designed for consumer electronics and office equipment. The 24V DC version offers easier integration into heavy duty industrial systems. Both are offered in either dark-ON or light-ON configuration to simplify circuit design. Initially released as board-mount SMD devices, Omron is expecting to release wire-mount connector versions in the near future.

French award for innovative instrument.

The leading French technical magazine MESURES awarded Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG a prize for innovation. The award ceremony is the closing event of the annual TECHNOLOGICAL RANKING in Paris, held in the offices of the FIEEC (Federation of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Industries). Grouped in different categories, each of the innovative products was judged based on its technical features.

In 2018, the products nominated were again from well-known companies. In nine different categories, industrial analysis, industrial data processing, control and regulation, etc. prizes were awarded to products which were judged as being particularly innovative.

In the Electrical and Electronic Instruments category, Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG won a prize. The product CENTRAX CU3000/5000 was named as worthy of special mention and picked out for the cherished trophy. In his speech of thanks, Sascha Engel, CEO of Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG explained why they had chosen to present this product. Combining the highly-precise measurement of electrical values directly with a PLC maximizes the added-value for the customer in terms of flexibility, efficiency and cost optimisation.

The CENTRAX CU can be installed in decentralised as well as centralised energy automation applications. The measurement part of the instrument is capable of detecting more than 1500 measurement parameters to determine the status of the mains supply, energy consumption and mains quality. In the integrated PLC, this data is directly processed via CODESYS, both logically and algorithmically, without requiring any additional equipment.

External field devices for measuring any other values are no problem for the CENTRAX CU series. Fire-resistant shelters for chemical plant.

Novel outdoor equipment shelters from Intertec Instrumentation have been chosen to help a leading European chemical manufacturer to upgrade its distributed plant control system.

Constructed using unique composite GRP (glass fibre reinforced polyester) materials, four Intertec shelters will provide advanced fire resistance properties. This attribute will simplify the housing and protection of electronic control and instrumentation equipment at optimised satellite locations within the processing plant.

Additionally, the GRP-based fabrication materials significantly reduces the weight of the shelters compared with traditional metal- or concrete-based constructions. In this application, this weight reduction will allow the plant operator to further optimise the positioning of the control system by mounting three of the shelters at height on steelwork frames.

The shelters offer F60-rated passive fire resistance, providing a barrier to fire spread for 60 minutes. This is achieved by means of a unique composite material that combines GRP sheets with embedded layers of mineral wool.

The shelters provide large interior floor areas up to 55 m2 (5 x 11 m). To help speed this plant upgrade project, Intertec is providing the plant buildings fitted with lighting, a raised floor to accommodate cabling, and ducting for the cooling air with a sophisticated downflow cooling system to protect the electronics equipment.
