UHF RFID reader.

The new RF-R3x0 from Harting is a versatile UHF RFID reader that combines software flexibility with an extremely robust and compact design that enable its deployment in a wide range of application scenarios.

Thanks to the use of M12 industrial connectors and aluminium die-cast housings, the reader is rugged enough to meet the most demanding requirements – as found in railway applications, for example – while the flexible software concept means that a few clicks are all it takes to switch the unit to a completely different application.

Typical applications might range from a simple PLC connection to the integration of signals with an ERP system or a connection to a train control system.

The UHF RFID reader is based on four basic versions: the LLRP 1.1, which is also designed to connect to the Harting Ha-VIS middleware; a unit with OPC UA support that meets the Companion Specification for Auto ID Devices for uniform connection to ERP and PLC systems (interface description available at info@AIM.de or from the OPC Foundation); a Modbus TCP version for easy connection to PLC systems (which is also suitable for communication with older PLC systems); and a version containing embedded middleware for complete standards-based data pre-processing. Various communication facilities such as web services, database connections, UDP and TCP telegrams are available for configuration.

These latter capabilities make it very easy to create additional project-based or industry-specific solutions. Thanks to the software container concept of the Harting MICA® industrial computer platform, which serves as the basis of the new Ha-VIS RF-R3x0 reader family, there are virtually no limitations on the system’s versatility. Whether Harting’s own extensions, e.g. the interpretation of the sensor data from a Harting ETB sensor transponder or extensions created by system integrators – the diversity of applications knows no bounds.

For an easy start to a new project, the Ha-VIS RF-R300 contains all the basic functions listed above for testing. These can then be activated or licensed in an application-specific manner.

Connecting via 4G.

HMS Industrial Networks has released the new 4G LTE (Europe, North America) for its award winning remote access gateway, eWON Cosy. This enables users to access, troubleshoot, program, monitor and control machinery remotely.


Using an eWON Cosy with a 4G cellular connection allows users to access their machinery in remote places where Ethernet is not available.

The Cosy 4G router can not only connect to the newest LTE (Long-Term Evolution) networks, but it also ensures an automatic fall-back to lower cellular connectivity. If the 4G network becomes unstable, congested or unavailable, the connection will automatically switch to 3G (HSPA/WCDMA). In other words, it ensures continuity in connectivity continuity, no matter what the network circumstances are.

4G connectivity is also beneficial when it comes to latency: there is a better interaction and compatibility with the latest equipment installed by Mobile Network Operators (MNO). Furthermore, it can also provide better network coverage depending on the mobile installations provided by the MNO. As the Cosy 4G comes in 2 variants, it ensures a wide compatibility with major MNO’s and covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, North America.

Fibre-optic connectors.


Recently certified to ISO9001:2015 Cliff Electronics has added the popular and widely used ST Fibre Optic Connector to its very successful range of 24mm-diameter XLR Panel cut-out connectors. These Straight Tip connectors utilise a bayonet-style coupling enabling a simple twist-on and twist-off installation. The ST connector is one of the most popular connectors for multi-mode networks in buildings and campuses.

The Cliff range of XLR Format Standard and FeedThrough connector range allows designers to simply integrate audio, video, digital, optical, networking and data feeds into professional equipment for broadcast, lighting, audio, instrumentation and industrial applications.

Cliff offer two options, the CP30218 mounted in a countersunk hole and the CP30218X with a plain hole mount. ST connectors use a 2.5mm ferrule with a round body, the connector stays securely in place with a "twist-on/twist-off" bayonet-style mechanism. The Cliff ST connector may be front or rear mounted to control panels and is available in a plastic or rugged metal housing.

By utilizing the XLR chassis and standard panel cut-out Cliff’s wide range of standard and FeedThrough connectors can all be mounted on control panels with the same hole punched for every connector required. The new Fluke Ti400 PRO and Ti300 PRO Infrared Cameras, part of their range of Professional Series of IR cameras,  feature a more intuitive touch screen interface with a higher contrast display and compatibility with optional smart telephoto, wide-angle and macro lenses which can be interchanged without calibration. Merger to provide sensors, data acquisition, preparation, evaluation & engineering services.

HBM is to merge its activities with BKSV (Brüel and Kær Sound and Vibration) from 1 January 2019. Both owned by the British entity Spectris Plc, the new company will be named HBK (Hottinger, Brüel and Kjær).

“Brüel and Kjær and HBM are both premium hardware providers in measurement with a strong focus on software. By combining their activities, the two companies can deliver an integrated offering, combining sensors, data acquisition, preparation, evaluation and engineering services into one solution for its customers” says Eoghan Ó Lionaird, Business Group Director responsible for the Test and Measurement segment.

They are global leaders in their respective disciplines and have complementary expertise across the measurement chain. By leveraging their respective strengths, the aim is to create a business with the capabilities, breadth and scale to deliver differentiated customer value, for example, in the domains of propulsion, durability, safety and noise, vibration and harshness.

“This merger losely with the Spectris strategy of focusing on the provision of complete solutions combining hardware, software and related services and will enable us to provide a broader service with increased value to BKSV and HBM customers,” according to Ó Lionard.

In preparation of the merge, a new management team has been selected, drawing on the strengths and expertise from both HBM and BKSV. Merger preparation activities will be undertaken from now through to the end of 2018, and during this phase, both companies will operate in existing structures. All existing HBM agreements, points of contact, procedures, partnerships etc. will continue as normal.

Automated testing of multi-fibre connectors.

Laser Components recommends the new MPO switch from VIAVI Solutions for quick and easy OTDR testing of MPO multi-fibre connectors.

In combination with an optical reflectometer and a base unit such as the MTS-4000 V2, it ensures that all twelve fibres of the MPO connector are tested for their attenuation, as it automatically switches from one to the other. Thus, the fibres no longer have to be tested individually using fanout cables. This makes network testing a lot easier, especially when it comes to structured single-mode cabling in data centers, as well as the testing of MPO cables for FTTH/access networks and mobile phone front pods (FTTA/C-RAN).

Multipath push-on (MPO) connectors are used when many optical fibres have to be connected in very small spaces. An MPO connector usually contains twelve fibres. This not only saves space and weight but also saves installation time and costs.

Retro enclosures!

Two new ranges of desktop enclosures from Hammond Electronics are now available from JPR Electronics . Their retro styling offers manufacturers of high-end hi-fi equipment, audio, broadcast, set-top boxes and other consumer products as well as industrial instrumentation an alternative to conventional cases in applications where appearance can be as important as function.

Paul Raynor, Director of JPR Electronics, comments, “Many high-end and prestige products require aesthetically pleasing and interesting packaging to meet the expectations of end users. Such products rarely have the volume production to justify a bespoke enclosure. The new Hammond retro styled enclosures offer an ideal solution for these low volume high quality designs.”

The HWCAS consists of a complete walnut frame fitted with aluminium top and optional base panels and is available with either a black powder coat or natural finish. The 1444CWW and the 1441CWW families are fabricated from aluminium or steel respectively and fitted with walnut end panels to the shorter sides. The aluminium version has a natural finish; the steel has a black powder coat finish.

The HWCAS is available in two sizes, either 330 x 254 x 76mm or 432 x 254 x 76mm. The chassis corners are of dovetailed construction, reinforced with corner posts fitted with brass inserts to take the panel fixings. The 2mm thick top panel will support heavy components such as transformers without bowing. The 1444 and 1441CWW units come in six sizes ranging from 178 x 127 x 51mm to 432 x 254 x 102mm. The rigid chassis is spot welded for strength and rigidity and is complete with an integral top panel, with the result that there are no visible fixings to mar the sleek appearance.

Zoned Safety Valve Island.

Emerson has introduced the ability to integrate multiple safety zones within a single ASCO Numatics™ Series 503 valve island. This enables the creation of up to three independent electro-pneumatic safety zones, while also allowing independent non-safe sections to co-exist within one valve island assembly.
Alternative solutions enable the isolation of one zone only per island. The zoned safety approach helps the design engineer satisfy the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and comply with ISO 13849-1 while eliminating the components and complexity commonly found in existing safety circuits.

“With this functionality, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and end user can easily and cost-effectively configure up to three safety circuits in a machine using a single ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island with G3 fieldbus electronics,” said Scott Weickel, Vice President of Engineering for Machine Automation applications at Emerson. “Our simple, user-friendly zoned safety approach reduces components, saves space and improves design flexibility.”

The ASCO Numatics zoned safety valve island ensures the operator does not have to shut down the entire machine by releasing compressed air with a redundant safety/control dump valve. Instead, the valve island can be configured to shut down pilot air and power only to the group of valves that controls the machine’s motion in the operator’s vicinity.

“Because zoned safety capability is designed into the standard ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island platform, no redesign is required and the user has optimal choices when selecting valve options, accessories, and flow requirements,” said Weickel. “The flexible approach also significantly reduces safety system cost and enables valuable machine space to be saved for other purposes.”

The ASCO Numatics zoned safety valve island has been evaluated by TÜV Rheinland (Report No. 968/FSP 1228.00/16) and is compatible with category 3 PLd.

Din Rail PSUs.

Two new high quality Din Rail Power Supplies have been announced by PULS Power. They  feature an integrated high efficiency MOSFET based decoupling function facilitating N+1 redundant operation without an external decoupling unit or use of inefficient “OR-ing” diodes.

The CP10.241.R2 and CP20.241.R2 offer output power of 240W and 480W respectively and both feature hot-swap connectors ensuring no-break power in mission critical applications. NDT in smaller pipes.

Ashtead Technology has added the Phoenix Bracelet Scanner and the latest custom phased array probes to its fleet of rental NDT instruments as a response to an increased demand for the ability to inspect smaller diameter pipes.

“At just 13mm the Bracelet is an extremely low profile scanner for phased array or ToFD weld inspections of small bore pipes,” says NDT Market Manager Steve Drake. “Quick and easy to set up and run with one of our Olympus OmniScans or other PAUT units, the Bracelet can be used manually on pipes ranging from 0.5” upwards by simply adding extra links.”

The scanner comprises a series of links to make a flexible chain which wraps around the pipe, and a strap secures the Bracelet to the pipe once the axial position is established. The Bracelet can hold either one probe for single-sided inspections or linked with a second probe for dual-sided inspections. The ultrasonic probe and profiled wedge are fixed to one end of the Bracelet in an adjustable clasp.

To scan, the Bracelet is rotated around the pipe with rubber tyres providing axial grip to prevent slippage. A miniature encoder (42 steps/mm) is attached to the opposing end of the Bracelet with the encoder wheel running around the pipe surface collecting data from the circumferential axis.

Digital signal measurement.

The MX460B-R digital measurement module from HBM,  is the latest addition to its rugged and flexible SomatXR Data Acquisition System.

Suitable for measuring torque, rotational speed, angle, position, or displacement in harsh environments, the MX460B-R is a 4-channel, digital impulse and frequency measurement module which is suitable for precise acquisition of digital signals in a range of mobile applications such as vehicle testing and test benches.

Also able to acquire information resulting from pulse width measurements or crank angle sensors to facilitate TDC (Tope Dead Centre) or angle-based data analysis in combustion testing, the latest module allows torsional vibration analysis and differential angle calculation in real time.

Digitized railway!

Meeting the need for secure and reliable data connection to support railway digitisation, Westermo has launched a range of compact data networking products for onboard and trackside applications. The RT-310, RT-320 and RT-370 wireless local area network (WLAN) devices ensure reliable, continuous, high-speed data communications in extreme operational environments, supporting applications such as monitoring train speeds and track conditions, and providing onboard video surveillance and passenger hotspots.

The RT-310 and RT-370 are WLAN access points which support multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) high-speed data transfer. The RT-320 is a multiple-mode WLAN connection point, which can be configured as an access point, or as client and bridge modes. The devices have been designed to provide robust solutions in applications where it is not possible to use network cables. These include transmitting information from a moving train to wayside monitoring stations and establishing a data connection between train carriages where a specialised coupler is not available for network cables.

Supporting reliable longer-distance communications, including those from train to ground, the RT-320 provides high output power, regardless of temperature, modulation and frequency band, to achieve stable connection. To achieve seamless communication as a train moves along the track, the device provides fast handover support, enabling it to quickly switch from one trackside access point to the next. A special Inter-Consist Link (ICL) mode meets the challenge of providing stable and secure communication between consists, without incurring the cost of installing communication cabling over the couplers.

The RT-310 is ideal for providing internet access to passengers, offering high input sensitivity that enables a good connection even to weak signals, while its fast connection support prevents passengers from enduring a long wait for connectivity to be established.

The RT-370 is designed specifically for infrastructure applications and has a direct mains input and direct fibre connection to support long distance connections typically found in trackside installations.

Long-range and optimised wireless link spans enable the devices to offer highly reliable performance in mission-critical networks. Superior radio link performance is provided through high-end radio-frequency (RF) circuitry, and high-calibre RF front-end solutions for optimised operation near other WLAN, 3G or 4G networks. 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radar bands are supported and robust Dynamic Frequency Selection features support improved radar detection.

The devices are approved to the EN 50121-4 standard for trackside applications, with the RT-310 and RT-320 also approved to the EN 50155 standard for onboard applications. The products are designed to withstand the challenging environments and demands of rail applications, including constant vibration, extreme temperatures and humidity. They are rated to IP66 for prevention of water and dust ingress, incorporate a GORE-TEX® membrane to prevent internal condensation and have an operating range of -40°C to +70°C. High-level isolation between all interfaces protects against overvoltage and flashover. These features ensure reliability and an extended mean time between failures. A compact design enables easy installation into onboard applications and configuration is easy using a web management tool.

In addition to rail applications, all three devices are very well suited for deployment in other industries with severe operating conditions and tough environments, such as mining.

Stars in security!

Endress+Hauser has become the first industrial company to obtain the StarAudit certification. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) offering of the measurement instrumentation specialist was given four-star certification by EuroCloud. Within the framework of the certification, all areas that are relevant for the collection of data in cloud-based applications were reviewed.

Gresham Power Electronics has announced the introduction of its latest micro-footprint, Ultra High Density (UHD) 225W output power supply the OF(M)225.

The OF(M)225 Series of open frame switching power supplies utilises a highly advanced circuit topology to deliver 225 Watts with fan cooling and 120 Watts convection cooled in an industry standard package that has a 2.00 x 4.00 inch footprint while being just 1.0 in. high (50.8 x 101.6 x 25.4mm).

Gresham’s OF(M)225 power supplies feature cutting edge power density of 28W/in³, high efficiency up to 94% typical and feature a universal AC input with active PFC. Output voltages of 12, 15, 24, 30, 48 and 56VDC are available. All models feature an auxiliary output to power a cooling fan and an optional cover kit may be supplied to order.

The product range has been designed meet the requirements of medical, LED lighting, telecom and industrial applications.

Indication in the round!

andersDX has launched a new range of larger high performance circular displays of 3” and 4.2” diameter, aimed particularly at automotive, industrial and marine dashboards. The new displays complement andersDX existing range of TFT, PMOLED and OLED modules of just over 1” diameter, which are aimed at wearable applications.

Paul Hooper, Display Group Manager at andersDX said, “The new circular TFT module brings a contemporary look for the automotive and marine market as well as medical and industrial applications. Larger in size, they also offer a greater temperature range, wide viewing angle and high brightness. Usually seen as a volume production solution, we can offer circular modules with an affordable NRE and tooling cost structure for lower volume industrial applications.”

The new additions to the range of circular displays include 3.0” and 4.2” full-colour TFT modules which offer wide viewing angles, high contrast ratios and an extended temperature range of -30° to +85°C making them perfect for demanding environmental conditions.

The new larger displays complement the existing range of smaller circular TFT displays that vary in size from 1.22” to 1.38”, ideal for wearable electronics and small home appliances. AndersDX’s circular range includes a 1.3” circular AMOLED and a 1.13” PMOLED display.

Celebrating 30 years!

Gresham Power Electronics has a history of retaining members of staff for long periods of their working lives by providing a friendly and rewarding working environment.

Lois Shering
This is certainly true for Lois Shering, their Power Supply Department Administrator, who has now worked for the company for thirty years. Lois has grown up with the company and has got engaged, married and had a child who is now 18 while working there.

“Gresham has not only supported me over the last 30 years but has also greatly helped my daughter Nicole by being her main sponsor for her passion of ski racing” says Lois.

Lois’ daughter Nicole holds a number of British Ski Academy GBR Series indoor and outdoor championships and currently holds the top prize on the dry slope circuit of being the female “Zero” point racer.

Lois continues, “I have met and worked with many lovely people on my journey, some have come and gone while others are enjoying long service at Gresham like myself. The technology of business has certainly moved on, when I first started here commerce was carried out by telex, then fax and now by email. Power supply design and development has changed greatly over the years with constantly evolving technology and we strive to meet customer’s ongoing demands for quality, competitive prices, shorter lead-times and great after sales service.

Quality of WLAN Equipment improved.

A new 2x2 MIMO Measurement Software MX886200A-010 option for the Wireless Connectivity Test Set MT8862A has been launched by Anritsu. This latest release extends the measurement functions of the MT8862A to offer support for evaluating 2x2 MIMO WLAN equipment.
Most devices requiring high data transmission rates, such as smartphones, tablets, PCs, etc., are now using MIMO technology to increase the data transmission speed. Since MIMO uses a multi-antenna environment, assuring communications quality is particularly difficult. Consequently, WLAN equipment makers are anticipating more support calls from end users related to communications quality issues, and so urgently need support for MIMO measurements under actual operating conditions.

The Wireless Connectivity Test Set MT8862A is a measuring instrument for IEEE802.11ac/n/g/b/a WLAN equipment. Using its built-in network mode, the MT8862A offer the world’s first test solution that covers all measurements of radio-wave coverage range, output signal quality, modulation accuracy and 2x2 MIMO of IEEE802.11ac WLAN equipment under actual operation conditions. Installing the MX886200A-010 option to the MT8862A provides support for receiver sensitivity and transmit power measurements of 2x2 MIMO WLAN equipment using two MT8862A units in combination, helping WLAN equipment end users to assure communications quality and troubleshoot the cause of communications errors.

Vehicle dynamics system.

The Correvit® S-Motion vehicle dynamics test system from Kistler uses proven optical measurement technology for non-contact measurement of speed and slip angle. Correvit technology was first introduced in 1981 as the world’s first optical speed and distance sensor and Kistler have continuously improved the technique. The new version uses the latest technology to deliver the highest levels of accuracy and repeatability.

The S-Motion offers an ideal solution where high precision measurement of distance, speed (absolute, longitudinal, transverse) and angle are required for dynamic vehicle testing, e.g. steady-state circular-course driving (ISO 4138). Accelerometers built into the unit provide longitudinal and transverse acceleration data which is integrated with the optical speed and slip-angle information to provide significantly reduced signal noise and a high measurement frequency of 500 Hz with a minimal signal delay of 6ms.

In addition, an integrated GPS receiver enables the determination of position and time and integrated angular rate sensors allow pitch and roll angle and rotation around the vertical axis of the vehicle to be measured. Further signals such as levelled acceleration or curve radius and the conversion of speed to any point of the vehicle, e.g. centre of gravity or rear axis, are calculated inside the sensor.

These additional signals provide the test engineer with the ability to acquire the large number of measurands required for standard dynamic driving tests and simplifies the instrumentation of the vehicle whilst minimizing application errors.

MES enhancement helps life sciences.

Quality Review Manager, is a software application from Emerson, designed to reduce the time it takes to release therapies to patients by decreasing the time and effort required for product quality reviews. Delivered as part of the Syncade manufacturing execution system (MES), this new tool helps life sciences companies more easily adopt review-by-exception operating approaches, allowing quality and manufacturing personnel to safely release batches faster, reducing inventory and time to market.

“Quality is paramount in the life sciences industry, so exception reviews must be supported by fully connected systems that deliver data integrity,” said John Nita, vice president of sales and product management for Emerson’s life sciences business. “Quality Review Manager provides a single source of the truth, helping to streamline exception reporting and resolution, ultimately improving operating performance and helping medicines reach patients faster.”

It significantly reduces the length of reviews by simplifying the process of accurately documenting all actions taken when responding to exceptions. Today most review teams must wait until after an entire batch is complete before reviewing process exceptions. With Quality Review Manager, the quality department can review process exceptions as they occur and while the batch is still in process, providing a more accurate and timely response. Exception reviews can be completed within hours of the exception occurring rather than weeks after the batch has been completed, eliminating potential delays in releasing product to patients.

Providing a single environment for reviewing exceptions, Quality Review Manager speeds up the process of managing exception documentation by autogenerating data that provides context for each exception. Exception dashboards help prioritise reviews while focusing on the most critical exceptions affecting the process. After all exceptions are closed, Quality Review Manager supports an automated release methodology by immediately releasing finished batches once all exceptions are resolved, thereby reducing the lag between production, product release and patient delivery.

Underground Survivalists.

The New Generation Twisted-Pair Cable from Hradial Special Cables is a robust alternative to the Standard Coaxial Cable. In terms of its mechanical and functional integrity and reliable signal transmission it clearly outperforms the standard coax cable. Typical applications for the new cable are power supply systems and data transmission for TV inspection robots for underground sewers.

All too often Coaxial cables are stressed to their limit, mechanically as well as physically, and sometimes even beyond it because of the way they are constructed: whenever they are subjected to high tensile and torsional loads - which is the case if they are used on sewer inspection robots - the central coaxial conductor located at the core experiences the full brunt of these forces, thereby becoming the weakest link in the package. If there is an accident, the heavy TV inspection robot is pulled back out of the sewer by the cable. Core breakages inside of the cable are then really only a question of time.

In the case of Hradil’s New Generation Twisted-Pair Cable with its 7.4 mm diameter, however, all tensile and torsional loads are absorbed by the complete cable cross-section. Apart from its outstanding mechanical properties, the New Generation Twisted-Pair Cable has excellent EMI characteristics. Moreover, and, different from the Coax cable, there are no limitations for the Twisted-Pair Cable in terms of available lengths and no data loss. Acquisition improves smart pneumatics technologies capabilities!

Emerson has agreed on terms to acquire Aventics from Triton for a cash purchase price of €527 million*. Aventics is among the global leaders in smart pneumatics technologies that power machine and factory automation applications. Aventics significantly expands the Emerson's reach in this growing $13 billion (€11m) market.

Data recorder for vehicle testing.

The new SomatXR CX22B-R data recorder, which has been specifically designed to reliably acquire and store measured data in mobile applications, such as interactive vehicle testing is now available from HBM.

The CX22B-R provides straightforward configuration and analysis of measured data during measurements in the field which enables users to perform efficient tests and create clear and comprehensive test reports.

Offering users a flexible solution, the instrument can accurately record data from other SomatXR modules using Ethernet connection and can also be used as a gateway for direct data transmission to a PC, meaning that both centralised and distributed measurement systems can be implemented.

Pre-installed with Catman measurement software, data is acquired and stored in BIN format. However, conversion to other formats can be simply tailored to suit individual measurement requirements.

Designed specifically for use in harsh environments, the CX22B-R has an extended temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. Featuring a robust design, which is highly resistant to shock and vibration, the CX22B-R is also IP65 and IP67 protection rated and includes an integrated uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for fail safe operation in the vehicle.
