Towards ruminant gas emissions reduction!

Scientists in South East Asia have measured greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from goats and cattle in a series of research projects investigating the effects of different feeding regimes. By changing the animals’ diets, GHG emission reductions of up to 60% have been achieved.
21 different research projects have been reviewed by Gasmet Technologies* which supplied the portable FTIR gas analyzer that was used in the work. The research papers have been published by Livestock Research for Rural Development,a peer-reviewed international journal for research into sustainable developing world agriculture.

Prof. Reg Preston, who participated in much of the research, says: “With an understanding of the enteric fermentation processes that result in the formation of methane, it is possible to speculate on the effects of changes to the diets of ruminants, so these research projects were designed to test our hypotheses. In each case, the effects of various diets were measured in terms of animal performance criteria such as feed conversion and growth rates, but also in terms of GHG emissions.”

Major concern exists relating to recent increases in global methane emissions. However, livestock play an important role in Asia, which extends beyond the supply of meat and milk; they are also used for purposes such as draft power, transportation, capital, credit, social value, hides, and as a source of organic fertilizer. Nevertheless, ruminants are significant contributors to atmospheric GHG emissions. It is essential therefore to find ways to reduce these emissions, and the research projects mentioned above demonstrate how significant reductions can be achieved while improving animal production and utilising low cost, locally available resources.

Personal VOC monitor.

For applications where noise levels are quieter, it is possible to reduce the sound using the volume control within the Cub PC.

The updated Cub PC software offers a series of enhancements including the option to carry out bump tests using the selected gas or calibration gas, new gas table, the ability to send configurations to multiple Cubs at once and Cub PC lock with restricted user version.

The instrument has a dynamic range of 1 parts per billion (ppb) to 5000 parts per million (ppm) sensitivity - giving an early warning of exposure to hazardous gases, including benzene.

When worker exposure exceeds pre-set limits the Cub’s upgraded audible, vibrating and flashing LED alarms provides an alert to the gases present. Readings are displayed on a bright, back-lit LCD display with selectable data logging time. An independent alarm sounds to the employee but also records a quantifiable measure of exposure to VOCs.

The Cub is available as a ppm instrument with 10.6 eV lamp for accurate detection of a wide range of VOCs to ppm levels. The CubTAC ppm variant with 10.0 eV lamp accurately detects total aromatic compounds (TACs), including benzene, down to ppb levels. It can be upgraded to ppb sensitivity quickly and easily via Ion Science’s micro website. Docking stations are available for USB communication, charging and calibrating the Cub.

The instrument’s patented MiniPID sensor technology has been independently verified as best performing for speed, accuracy and humidity resistant operation. The Cub’s innovative anti-contamination and patented Fence Electrode Technology provide extended run time in the most challenging environments.

It meets ATEX, IECEx standards and responds to hazardous gases and vapours in less than 13 seconds. A two-year warranty is available when the Cub is registered online.

Modbus interface transmitters.

Knick Elektronische Messgeräte have expanded their slim Memosens transmitter series MemoRail for control cabinet installation with a Modbus interface version. The MemoRail Modbus A1405N is the first multi-parameter analyzer that provides operators with an economic, compact transmitter for full-featured integration of Memosens monitoring stations into the fieldbus standard. Up until now, operators could only choose between comprehensively equipped analyzers with a display or compact transmitters with limited functionality.

The new MemoRail Modbus modules from Knick, which feature a modular housing with a width of just 17.5 mm, not only transmit measured values and diagnostic data to the Modbus master, they also enable unrestricted access to device configuration and sensor calibration through the Modbus RTU protocol. Up to 32 transmitters can be connected to a Modbus master. For the measurement of pH/ORP, conductivity or oxygen, MemoRail Modbus can be combined with all Memosens sensors, whether pH glass, IsFET, oxygen, or conductivity (conductive and inductive). What's more, the DIN rail module is the only analyzer of its class that enables the connection of LDO sensors (luminescent dissolved oxygen) for the optical measurement of oxygen. The new devices come as single- or dual-channel versions with freely combinable parameters or sensors. Either two freely selectable Memosens sensors or a Memosens sensor and a SE 740 LDO can be connected. Additionally, the transmitters allow for the connection of the new SE 554 X/1-AMSN and SE 555 X/1-AMSN combination sensors that synchronously measure pH and ORP values. In this way, a dual-channel MemoRail model provides four readings as well as temperature.

The network address for rapid Modbus configuration is set via DIP switches on the front panel. The 24 V DC supply can be connected either via TBUS or via a cable connected to the terminals at the back. Red and green LEDs indicate the device status, communication interruptions, defective sensors or device settings unsuitable to the sensor as well as the device's maintenance requirements. Knick provides a 3-year warranty on the MemoRail Modbus transmitters.

More interconnecting options.

Cliff Electronics’ range of 24mm-diameter XLR Panel cut-out connectors has been further extended to now include mono and stereo ¼” jack sockets and high current terminal posts.

XLR connectors are widely used in audio and broadcast systems and are increasingly popular in instrumentation, medical and industrial products due their flexibility, security and reliability of the format. By utilizing the XLR chassis and standard panel cut-out Cliff’s wide range of standard and FeedThrough connectors can all be mounted on control panels with the same hole punched for every connector required. Repair of thermal power detectors.

Gentec-EO has appointed Laser Components as an authorized repair center for their measuring instruments. This strengthens the company's position as the main European support partner for the Canadian manufacturer.

Since 2004, the family-owned company from Olching (D) has been operating one of the world's three Gentec-EO calibration centers for laser and power measurement devices and has established itself as a Europe-wide technical support partner.

Minor maintenance work had already been carried out as part of this calibration and adjustment service. Now its capability has been expanded. In the future, defective power detectors can be repaired directly in Germany. Employees qualified by the manufacturer have access to an extensive stock of original spare parts.

Zoned Safety Valve Island.

The ability to integrate multiple safety zones within a single ASCO Numatics™ Series 503 valve island has been introduced. This enables the creation of up to three independent electro-pneumatic safety zones, while also allowing independent non-safe sections to co-exist within one valve island assembly. Alternative solutions enable the isolation of one zone only per island. The zoned safety approach helps the design engineer satisfy the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and comply with ISO 13849-1 while eliminating the components and complexity commonly found in existing safety circuits.
“With this functionality, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and end user can easily and cost-effectively configure up to three safety circuits in a machine using a single ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island with G3 fieldbus electronics,” said Scott Weickel, Vice President of Engineering for Machine Automation applications at Emerson. “Our simple, user-friendly zoned safety approach reduces components, saves space and improves design flexibility.”

The ASCO Numatics zoned safety valve island ensures the operator does not have to shut down the entire machine by releasing compressed air with a redundant safety/control dump valve. Instead, the valve island can be configured to shut down pilot air and power only to the group of valves that controls the machine’s motion in the operator’s vicinity.

“Because zoned safety capability is designed into the standard ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island platform, no redesign is required and the user has optimal choices when selecting valve options, accessories, and flow requirements,” said Weickel. “The flexible approach also significantly reduces safety system cost and enables valuable machine space to be saved for other purposes.”

WLAN Access Points.

HMS Industrial Networks has introduced two new Anybus® WLAN Access Points – industrial-grade infrastructure hubs for long range Wireless LAN connectivity. The Anybus Wireless LAN (Local Area Network) Access Points allow users to set up an industrial wireless infrastructure for multiple wireless clients. LIMS in cereal & baking!

A new case study from Autoscribe Informatics discusses the use of the Matrix LIMS in the Cereal, Milling and Baking Science Laboratory at Allied Technical Centre (ATC). It illustrates how a flexible, configurable LIMS can be adapted by the users themselves to meet changing requirements. Successive versions of Matrix have been implemented at ATC for over 20 years, beginning with V2 in the mid-1990s.

Allied Technical Centre, in Maidenhead, Berkshire (GB), is part of Associated British Foods plc. ATC provides technical leadership in a number of areas. Matrix V2 was initially purchased for registering samples and logging jobs. Following training on the configuration of Matrix, the ATC Technical Support team took ownership of Matrix and began an internal development program that has continued to the present day, extending the scope of the LIMS and utilizing Matrix to the best benefit of the laboratory.

The case study shows how Matrix has transformed the management of sample data at ATC. The major benefit offered by Matrix is the configurability and the flexibility it brings in allowing staff at ATC to evolve the system to meet their needs. The case study also shows how many of the individual functions within Matrix have been found to be particularly useful.

Noise monitoring terminal.

Svantek has launched the SV 307 integrated Noise Monitoring Terminal (NMT) designed for permanent noise monitoring applications. The small, lightweight system features a new Class 1 MEMs microphone for major cost benefits and sleeve type case for easy mounting.

Protected by an IP66-rated waterproof, removable casing, the SV 307 integrates a Class 1 (IEC 61672) sound level meter with 3G modem for fast data transfer over the internet to PC with standard connectivity. Offering optional airport and community characteristics, a Class 1 MEMs microphone with lifetime warranty enables wide frequency range up to 20 KHz with the measurement data stored on a microSD card.

The energy efficient NMT incorporates an innovative patented system check with an inbuilt reference sound source producing level of 100dB at 1 KHz. As an option, the SV 307 can perform real-time frequency analysis in 1/1 and 1/3 octave bands and save results with the time history data. In addition, it can record the audio signal as standard WAVE files for noise source recognition.

A large colour OLED display and 10 push buttons enable easy configuration of the NMT in the field removing the need for an external handset or reconnection to a PC. The large windscreen is highly efficient in reduction of a wind noise effects even at high wind speeds. Metal spikes protect the NMT from birds.

The SV 307’s waterproof casing can be easily mounted to a post and removed for quick access to the user interface. It also offers protection against extreme weather conditions whilst fulfilling Class 1 accuracy.

The SV 307 has an internal Li-Ion battery and interface for connecting solar panels. A waterproof mains adapter for charging the battery and powering the station is also included for continuous operation in the field.

Svantek’s SvanNET cloud service monitors the wireless communication, powering and access to the SV 307 data. The scope of the basic SvanNET can be extended with multipoint project management that offers data storage in the cloud, data sharing, advanced alarming and reporting features. SvanNET is an on-line solution which means it doesn’t require software installation and is accessible through a web browser. The responsive design enables use of SvanNET on various devices such as smartphones or tablets.

The SV 307 is available with a number of optional functions including an accurate GPS hardware module providing information on the localisation as well as measurement time synchronisation.

The SvanPC++ Environmental Measurements feature is designed for post processing of data recorded by the NMT. It offers a powerful calculator and an automated noise event finder for noise source identification.

The option for 1/3 octave real-time analysis allows measurement of the noise frequency contents and is used for verification of noise sources in the environment. Plus time domain signal recording to WAVE format works during measurement and is logged in parallel to a time history. Once downloaded to PC it can be played back.

The SV 307 is supplied with a factory calibration certificate and 36-month warranty card.

The analysis shows higher production rates, lower lease operating expenses (LOE) and a reduction in safety risks have the greatest impact on overall operational improvements. Improvement in these areas matters most to liquids-weighted unconventional oil and gas operators and helps them achieve top quartile performance. Top quartile is defined as achieving operations and capital performance in the top 25 percent of peer companies and requires changing historic work processes across multiple functions.

For unconventional oil and gas operators, Emerson identified key technologies to quickly improve operations in a scalable way:

  • Optimising production with automated production surveillance, modelling and analytics and implementing produced fluids management techniques to reduce lost and unaccounted-for production.
  • Improving equipment reliability by leveraging analytics and automation diagnostics to lower LOE, providing greater visibility of costs per well.
  • Using prescriptive instead of reactive maintenance to improve health, safety, security and environmental compliance (HSSE) and reduce personnel exposure.

By harnessing the power of the IIoT and other transformation technologies, advanced automation systems can optimise operations with real-time information from a pervasive sensing layer and securely feed that data to robust standard analytics applications. With this data, experts – anywhere in the world – have better insight to respond quickly and confidently to changing conditions. This provides oil and gas operators the diagnostic capabilities and data insights to predict instead of react to issues, make better decisions and reduce risks.

Streamlining brewery operations.

For more than a decade, Oregon (USA) craft brewer Deschutes has employed Emerson’s intuitive automation solutions to help sustain rapid industry growth. The brewer has leveraged Emerson hardware, software and services to streamline automation, making it easier to expand production from 100,000 to more than 300,000 barrels annually. The growth will continue for Deschutes at its new facility, to be constructed in Roanoke, (VA USA).

As Deschutes grew during the last 15 years, management required an automation solution that would allow increased production without distracting focus from producing the highest-quality beers. The organisation turned to Emerson to help standardise process control. Advanced automation solutions from Emerson helped Deschutes reduce malt delivery time by 24 percent, providing the potential for an additional 450 barrels daily.

“We love making beer, but as the brewery grew, so did our need to automate to allow the brewmasters to concentrate on brewing. Emerson’s intimate understanding of our automation system hardware and organisational goals helped us find solutions to keep pace with rapidly increasing demand for our craft beers,” said Brian Faivre, brewmaster of operations. “Better visibility into process control strategy has allowed us to refine our processes to produce consistent quality beer, helping us quickly become a leader in the craft brewing industry.”

Deschutes adopted Emerson’s DeltaV™ standard configuration library, delivering control modules that are preconfigured to operate with standard software structure across a variety of basic operating facilities. These standardised control modules provided streamlined process control and Human Centered Design principles to bring the most important and relevant information to operators’ eyes, speeding decisions to ensure optimal batch quality and efficiency. In addition, Emerson’s Rosemount™ instrumentation feeds the DeltaV system vital level, temperature and flow information to ensure optimal batch quality.

To facilitate continued expansion and improvement, Deschutes will soon upgrade to the latest available release of Emerson’s DeltaV distributed control system. The upgrade will provide more efficient controller loading, improving performance as Deschutes adds another fermentation cellar to its Bend, Oregon facility in late 2018.

DIN-Rail PoE Injectors.

Two new high quality 8-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) power injectors are now available, from PULS Power, with either an integrated premium power supply or as stand-alone device.

System builders looking for high reliability and efficient solution to supply a multitude of PoE devices will be impressed by the new PULS designs. With up to 8 ports and an integrated premium power supply at just 77mm wide, the AC input injector can do what normally requires a combination of at least two devices, reducing costs and space required on the DIN Rail. For systems with an existing system power supply the PULS stand-alone DC input PoE injection device is just 39mm wide offering designers’ maximum space savings.

Using plug-and-play automatic device detection and classification, together with proven DIN rail mounting, PULS PoE Injectors are user friendly and easy to install. As layer-2 switching methodology is not required, real-time and security critical applications can be powered with the highest levels of confidence.

The new PULS PoE devices provide high performance capacity with PoE+ and Gigabit Ethernet and are of a robust and flexible design, making these injectors suitable for a variety of applications worldwide including; industrial process and factory automation, medical and health care, smart offices, VoIP and telecoms, surveillance, airports and Factory 4.0 infrastructure.

PULS DIN rail PoE Injectors are equipped with up to 8 ports and each port delivers a power of 30W (25.5W at load) and is compliant to IEEE Standard 802.3at. This enables PoE
communication with a high number of devices using just one PoE Injector.

System designers can specify a version with or without built in power supply depending on their application and variants with less than 8 ports are available on request. Standard DIN rail mounting allows an simple and fast installation of the PULS PoE Injector in customers’ application. No complicated setup or integration into network is required.

Large biomanufacturing facility annouced.

A Hong Kong-listed global open-access biologics technology platform company, is to invest €325 million and create 400 new jobs over five years in a new biologics drug substance manufacturing facility in Dundalk (IRL). This was announced by the Taoiseach, Mr Leo Varadkar, Head of the Irish Government, on Monday 30th April 2018.

Headquartered in Wuxi City, China, WuXi Biologics is a global leading platform company providing end-to-end solutions for biologics with a mission to accelerate and transform biologics discovery, development and manufacturing to benefit patients around the world.

This state-of-the-art facility-of-the-future will be built upon the novel approach WuXi Biologics has pioneered deploying multiple single-use bioreactors for commercial biomanufacturing and is also designed to be able to run continuous bioprocessing, a next generation manufacturing technology to be first implemented globally in this campus. A total of 48,000L fed-batch and 6,000L perfusion bioreactor capacity will be installed, representing the world’s largest facility using single-use bioreactors.

The manufacturing project in a 26-hectare campus, the company’s first site outside of China, is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Speaking at today’s announcement in Dundalk, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “This is the start of something special. We will see the Factory of the Future, right here in Dundalk. It’s the first sizable Greenfield project from China in the pharma sector and I am delighted to see it located here in Dundalk. It’s also the latest in a number of investments in this town which has become a hub for a range of sectors, mainly in the new knowledge based and pharmaceutical sectors.

Louth hosts National Pen, PayPal, Xerox, Wasdell and Prometric, to name just a few. In 2017 there were 24 IDA-supported companies in the county, and the number of jobs created by them has tripled from 1,300 in 2010 to almost 4,000. It’s all part of the Government’s goal to increase regional investment and associated jobs by up to 40 per cent.”

Minister for Business, Enterprise & Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD welcomed the announcement, saying: “I was delighted to join the Taoiseach for the official announcement of WuXi’s significant investment in Dundalk. This huge €325 million investment is a great vote of confidence in Ireland and reinforces our image as a global centre of excellence in Biologics. This investment will result in the creation of over 400 highly skilled jobs over 5 years as well as approximately 700 construction jobs. This development is a further example of the success of our commitment under the Regional Action Plans for Jobs to provide quality jobs in regional locations.”
