Connectors shrunk!

In line with the trend to miniaturisation in the industrial sector, Harting has introduced a new DIN 41612 multipoint connector that is only one third the size of previous versions.

The new DIN 41612 3Q/3R type multipoint connector family is available with or without a PCB hold-down clip and is particularly designed for connecting two circuit boards located perpendicularly to or alongside each other.

These new connectors are just as robust as the full and half-width versions, providing the tried and tested reliability that users appreciate in DIN 41612 connectors. The 20 or 30 contacts with compact 2.54 mm spacing can each take a current of up to 2 A. Plugs in 3B, 3C, 3Q and 3R sizes are also available to fit.

The availability of versions made of high-temperature material means that through-hole reflow soldering technology can be used for connecting to the circuit board.

Harting also offers custom built options in addition to the standard versions.

Open Rack technology.

Over three per cent of global electricity output is currently expended on data centers – one of the fastest-growing consumers of power today. This development is being countered by the recently founded Open19 Foundation with a new concept: standardised, modular IT infrastructures ensure higher efficiency, reduced costs, and greater flexibility in the data center. Rittal is now a member of the foundation to push the innovative approach forward together with other representatives.

Rittal has joined the Open19 Foundation. Driven by the Microsoft subsidiary LinkedIn and global vendors, such as HPE and GE Digital, it was launched in May 2017 with the aim of making data centers more cost-effective, more efficient and more flexible. The open source design is based on a standardized architecture for computer and storage components in a standard 19-inch rack, in which the components from different manufacturers are compatible with each other.

Standardized design at less cost

Standardization for a shorter time-to-market

The DC power supply ensures energy efficiency. The standardized, modular configuration cuts the time-to-market while the scalability enhances the flexibility in the data center.

Weight indicators upgrade!

The VPG Transducers brand of VPG has released a next-generation upgrade for its industry best-selling Intuition Series weight indicators.

Originally launched in 2016, the fully modular Intuition Series offers reliable, versatile general-purpose weight indication, in support of a variety of commercial and industrial requirements. The indicators combine large six-digit LED and LCD displays, weighing and counting modes, along with an array of advanced features and communication interfaces, including multiple hardware and software options. The result is a truly scalable, flexible and user-friendly weight indicator solution.

Each new standard feature of the next-generation Intuition Series is derived from direct customer feedback. Increases in onboard ALIBI memory capacity now allow for the paperless storage of up 100K individual weighing records, from the previous 10K. Units are available with CE mark, as well as with International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML)/EN45501:2015 compliant “legal for trade” certification. The Series now offers seamless compatibility with most industry standard digital load cell interfaces. A seven-function keyboard with 12 numeric keys has been added, as well as a digital I/O, consisting of four dry relay outputs and two opto-isolated inputs. These improvements allow for greater ease of operation, with simplified calibration and instrumentation setups. Two series ports (RS232) have been added for enhanced printing and networking functionality, as well as a full RS485 duplex interface. A plug-and-play setup now allow for various option cards to be easily added or removed, facilitating increased “on demand” customization capabilities. Both a battery housing and charger board, as well as a mounting bracket, have been added. With these and other new features, Intuition Series weight indicators can effectively support process weighing batch functions of up to eight steps, with choice of local or remote display capabilities. Other additional new features include piece counting mode, time and date stamp, and user and operator password protection.

Intuition Series weight indicators are expressly designed for ease of field service. To ensure their survivability in harsh environments, their full modular hardware and software infrastructure underwent two full years of rigorous field testing prior to release. Nearly every module or component within the Intuition Series, whether electronic or mechanical, is easily field replaceable. This includes, among others, the power supply, A/D, CPU, and communication interface. In addition to their durability and long service life, Intuition Series weight indicators include full diagnostic capabilities, 100% customizable hardware and software, and custom labeling capabilities. Typical applications include process weighing, bulk weighing, batching, and weighbridges. They may be specified within virtually any commercial or industrial weighing application where visual indication accuracy is of concern, and particularly, those with “legal for trade” certification requirements.

Acquisition creates a uniquely comprehensive automation portfolio.

The acquisition of B&R (Bernecker + Rainer Industrie-Elektronik GmbH) has been completed by ABB. B&R is the largest independent provider focused on product- and software-based, open-architecture solutions for machine and factory automation worldwide. The transaction, which was announced on  last April, is financed in cash and expected to be operationally EPS accretive in the first year.

Twenty year leak detectors replaced with latest models.

Air Liquide Electronics, has recently replaced two 20-year old Ion Science gas leak detectors with the company’s latest GasCheck G instruments. Chosen for the robust, reliable and upgradeable design, the Dallas-based semiconductor manufacturer is using the high performance handheld instruments to check for gas leaks after high pressure cylinder changes.

Jana Wu, TGCM Gas Specialist at Air Liquide comments: “We had two 20-year old Ion Science GasCheck B detectors that still worked okay but had started to suffer from the wear and tear you would expect after two decades. We did a benchmark against other old detectors around the factory and we were impressed to discover that the Ion Science units were the only ones still operational.

“Based on our experience with the old Ion Science instruments, we decided to upgrade to the company’s newer GasCheck G2 gas leak detectors which would give our cylinder technicians a little more confidence in leak testing results.”

Ion Science’s GasCheck G gas leak detector represents the latest in handheld gas detection technology. Its advanced system of micro thermal conductivity enables advanced sensitivity for the rapid, effective detection of gas leaks down to cc/sec, mg/m³ or parts per million (ppm) levels.

“We chose the GasCheck G2 model because it provided an actual reading instead of a bar graph type output plus it is upgradeable to the G3 model if required,” Jana adds. “One of our favourite features is the instrument’s ability to provide cc/sec or ppm measurements. It can also be adjusted for sensitivity which is an advantage.”

Designed for the search and location of gas leaks, the GasCheck G leak detector provides effective detection of almost any gas or mix of gases. Robust and reliable, the GasCheck G leak detector gives stable, repeatable readings. The instrument’s LCD display, LED indicator, and audible sounder clearly indicate when a gas leak is present.

Air Liquide uses the Ion Science GasCheck G gas leak detectors every time a cylinder is changed which is on a daily basis. The company’s cylinder technicians use the readings on the GasCheck G’s display to ensure there is no leak after connecting to the cylinder.

GasCheck G automatically zeros to the ambient air around it when switched on and is ready to detect immediately. The instrument’s easy to use graphical interface and intuitive keypad allows for simple function, selection, and adjustment.

Upgradeable throughout the range, the GasCheck G gas leak detector is available in three distinct versions; G1, G2 and G3 with varied capabilities. Features can be easily added by upgrading the instrument without it having to be returned to the factory.

Reducing chloramines in swimming pools.

Wycombe Leisure Centre in Buckinghamshire (GB) is using Hanovia’s SwimLine UV disinfection technology to keep chloramines at bay in its three indoor swimming pools. This ensures effective control of these unpleasant by-products of chlorine dosing in indoor pools, which are responsible for the typical ‘chlorine smell’, red, stinging eyes and skin irritations.

Three SwimLine systems are installed in total to support the competition pool, community pool and splash pad. The systems utilise Hanovia’s Photon single or multi-lamp medium pressure chamber and automatic wiper technology to provide robust and effective UV disinfection. The wavelength output of the SwimLine’s lamp is optimised specifically for the removal of chloramines.

By better controlling chloramines, the UV systems also produce high quality pool water, reduce corrosion of metal structures and create a healthier environment for bathers. The systems provide effective disinfection from threats like cryptosporidium or Giardia, which are resistant to chlorine, thus giving bathers and operators safe and crystal-clear waters.

First battery-less Off-Grid Solar Inverter for air conditioners.

CyboEnergy has released a family of off-grid and on/off-grid CyboInverters that can run Inverter-Air-Conditioners (IAC) without batteries. New product spec sheets are released and downloadable from their website.

Rotary Encoders with increased efficiency.

The new BlueBeam technology for incremental rotary encoders with optical sensing principle is a spectacular innovation. BlueBeam is essentially specially developed blue-light LEDs, which Pepperl+Fuchs uses for the first time in the new ENI58IL incremental rotary encoders, thereby offering performance features that have so far only been possible in high-performance special solutions.

The blue light from the new emitter LEDs exhibits a decreased diffraction compared to a longer-wave infrared light of the same gap width and can therefore depict sharper images. Combined with modern sensing chips, which have finer and thinner structures, the penetration depth of the blue light into the chip is shorter or more energy rich. This increases the efficiency factor of the light source so significantly that the sensing chip can generate much sharper contours. The result is a higher resolution, a significantly improved signal amplitude, and considerably reduced edge jitter. This means, for example, that the tolerances of the phase position A to B are reduced to well below 10 %, which is more than double the signal quality compared to values that are otherwise common on the market and achievable with infrared technology.

The more reliable scan rate also results in a considerably higher resolution. In this way, the new BlueBeam technology in the ENI58IL rotary encoders guarantees absolute accuracy, even in the highest speed ranges of up to 12,000 rpm. The maximum output frequency of the ENI58IL is a remarkable 400 kHz—up to 50% higher than standard rotary encoder variants. The highly precise BlueBeam technology offers the highest signal quality of incremental rotary encoders that are available on the market. In applications, this helps to reduce the tolerances and to improve the efficiency factor.

Large scale containment valves.

Powder containment and aseptic transfer valve specialist ChargePoint Technology has invested in new manufacturing machinery at its facility to meet increased demand for larger diameter valves for use in large scale drug manufacturing that requires containment.

The new 5-axis machine is the first of its kind in Britain and forms part of a wider £1million investment into advanced manufacturing capabilities at the company’s facility in Liverpool (GB). It will enable ChargePoint Technology to speed up the production and delivery of larger diameter valves up to 350mm (14”).

The investment has been made in response to growing containment demands that are being driven by growth within therapeutic areas, including oncology and hormonal drug products. This is leading to increased volumes of high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) being used in the production of tablets, capsules and other solid dosage forms.

Tony O’Sullivan, chief commercial officer (CCO) at ChargePoint Technology, commented: “We are seeing an increase in demand from solid dose manufacturing companies, including big pharma firms and CMOs in the US and Europe, for large scale containment valve solutions.

“Our new machinery enables us to manufacture larger diameter valves, directly addressing this market need. In addition, our in-house manufacturing strategy provides us with absolute control over the quality of the final product so our customers can rest assured that they receive high-performing and reliable technology.

As part of the investment, a new automated washing plant will be used to ensure effective and repeat cleaning of parts with higher throughput capacity, while a new 3-axis coordinate measuring machine (CMM) will also allow for high precision measurement and scanning of critical valve components in-house.

ChargePoint Technology intends to invest further in manufacturing capabilities at its facility over the next three years. In particular, it plans to continue to evolve its product design using the latest manufacturing methods to provide further advancements in valve technology.

30 years 'setting parameters instead of programming" in automation!

COPA-DATA will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its founding on September 1, 2017.

With the vision of making automation in industry a hands-on and enjoyable experience, Thomas Punzenberger founded Ing. Punzenberger COPA-DATA GmbH in 1987 in Salzburg. What began as a small start-up is now a company which boasts international success, with subsidiaries, distributors, partners and customers based all around the globe.

Since its foundation, COPA-DATA has dedicated itself entirely to technology. By the end of the 1980s, the brothers Thomas and Alexander Punzenberger recognised the potential software systems offer to industry – and to the energy industry in particular.

“Right from the start, our aim was to develop automation software which was to be better and simpler than any other system on the market,” explains CEO, Thomas Punzenberger. “At that time, many advised us against establishing our system on the basis of Microsoft Windows, because this was not common practice in the industry. Our concept of  'setting parameters instead of programming' was also met with a great deal of scepticism at the begnning. But our success proved us right. Both decisions have contributed significantly to our growth over the last 30 years.”

Software “made in Austria”
As a privately owned Austrian family business, COPA-DATA is independent of external investors and stock markets and can therefore trade with flexibility, agility, and autonomy. Although more than 90 percent of the turnover is generated through exports, the zenon software is developed exclusively at the company's headquarters in Salzburg. From here, the product is distributed via eleven subsidiaries, 16 distributors, and around 200 partner companies around the world.

With the 30 year anniversary fast approaching, it is fitting that COPA-DATA recently appointed a larger management team of three people at the beginning of the year. This will prepare the company well for the future. In terms of both its turnover, which stands at 31.4 million euros (2016), and number of employees, of which there are presently around 230 worldwide, COPA-DATA has set itself an ambitious course for growth over the next five years.

Pioneer of the digital Smart Factory
With its high-performance software systems, zenon and straton, and a growing network of professional partner companies, COPA-DATA now supports companies in the automotive, energy & infrastructure, food & beverage, and pharmaceutical sectors as they undergo a digital transformation to the Smart Factory. This extends from traditional automation projects for visualising, monitoring, and controlling machines and equipment, right up to cloud-based Industrial Internet of Things solutions for cross-location data analyses or predictive maintenance.

Top connector supplier of 2016.

Crouzet Automatismes awarded its top suppliers of the year during a ceremony held in late 2016. The 2016 awards were given out by Florence Coiffet, Crouzet’s purchasing director, who also presented the results and named SOURIAU as the year’s top connector supplier.

For this first edition of its supplier awards, Crouzet Automatismes set up a scoring system that took into account a number of key parameters: on-time delivery performance (OTDP), product quality (PPM), and a score that rated the quality of each supplier’s technical, commercial, and logistical support. SOURIAU beat all the other suppliers in its category with a final score of 90 out of 100.

Hermetic connectors for aeronautical applications
SOURIAU was awarded for the hermetic version of its Series 851 and 853 circular connectors delivered to Crouzet. These connectors are fitted on 98% of position sensors used by Airbus, Airbus Helicopters, and Turboméca.

Ability to handle a large number of orders and meet delivery times
SOURIAU delivers between 15,000 and 20,000 connectors to Crouzet’s Valence facility each year. Most orders are for 40 to 50 connectors apiece, which requires having a logistics system that is flexible, highly sophisticated, and able to deliver products regularly. The Supplier Logistics and Quality Performance score of 96 out of 100 obtained by SOURIAU for all of 2016 is testament to the efficiency of its logistics department. In addition, the company received an excellent quality score of 87 out of 100 in Q4 2016.

Strive to do even better
“We are extremely proud of being the very first recipients of this connector award. Needless to say, our goal is to sustain this high level of service whilst increasing our market share. And we can achieve this goal because we have the right products,” says Gilles Rémond, key sales account manager for the engine manufacturing and equipment team assigned to Crouzet Automatismes. “We are also going to build partnerships between our R&D teams and those of Crouzet, just like Ms Coiffet wishes.”

Communicating with BACnet or KNX.

Two new gateways connecting factory automation equipment to building automation systems – Anybus Modbus to KNX gateway and Anybus Modbus to BACnet gateway, have been released by HMS Industrial Networks. The new gateways enable industrial devices using Modbus to communicate on building systems using KNX or BACnet.

As BACnet and KNX are increasingly being used in buildings and infrastructure installations, there is an increasing demand for integrating industrial devices that communicate on Modbus into these networks. Therefore, HMS now presents Modbus-to-KNX and Modbus-to-BACnet gateways, which act as translators, allowing Modbus RTU, ASCII and TCP-devices to show up as individual KNX or BACnet-compliant devices in a building automation network. This enables central KNX/BACnet control and supervision of Modbus devices such as drives, HVAC controllers and measuring equipment in building installations.

Making system integration easier
“These new Anybus gateways give system integrators and facility owners more flexibility as they can now integrate Modbus devices in KNX or BACnet systems as well,” comments Christian Bergdahl, Product Marketing Manager at HMS. “The gateways are also a good fit for machine builders who want to offer their products to the Building Automation market. Building Automation is a fast-growing sector and we see a lot of demand for connecting industrial devices to building systems for supervision and control. Accordingly, we are very happy to be able to offer these two gateways, adding to the over 300 Anybus gateways already available for system integration.“

How the gateways work
The gateways offer a very straight-forward integration process. Modbus RTU slaves are connected to the serial port of the gateway, while Modbus TCP devices are connected to the Ethernet port. On the KNX or BACnet side, the gateways appear as simulated devices in the KNX or BACnet system.

Configuration is made in the Windows-based Anybus Configuration Manager (MAPS) tool. Commissioning and troubleshooting is also made also using this tool.

Multi concentric contact connectors.

The S and E Series Multi concentric contact connector is a new range of products from Lemo, dedicated to setups where connectors need to allow some rotation. Applications include petroleum downhole drilling systems and turret applications.

These precision engineered connectors include multiple concentric electrical contacts. The number of contacts range from 4 to 10, available in various shell sizes.

The contacts are designed for low speed rotation, they can last up to 10000 rotation cycles. This product is available both in the S series and E series (IP68) version.

Drive system configuration tools.

NORD Gear has recently released its new online product configuration tool that covers practically all of the information, add-on options and selection criteria required to size, specify, purchase and integrate the manufacturers broad range of geared motors, motors and drive electronics.

Smartphone or desktop users visiting their website can follow an intuitive process, with ample help callouts, tooltips and illustrations that progress the user from initial performance, product family and environmental requirements to complete ready-to-order product selection - with PDF data sheet downloads and a variety of NORDCAD compatible 3D models and dimension sheet downloads (Step, Sat, Iges, Dxf etc.). When selection is completed the ‘Request Quote’ feature includes provision for optional notes and application specifics for fast-track pricing through direct email contact with the NORD application engineering team.

The fully revised online configuration software expands to options such as mounting design, gear box options and lubrication for geared motors or choice of fieldbus network, integral features and accessories for drive electronics. Even gearmotor paint specifications are explored and listed for consideration. Motor power ratings for geared motors range from 0.12 to 200 kW whilst the output torque spans 10 Nm to 100,000 Nm. Unlike many competitive drive configurators available on the market, the specific performance ratings include the precise value for Service Factor, Radial and Axial Loads for much more defined application sizing. Design engineers, machine builders and system integrators who wish to explore the innumerable features of the new software are encouraged to experiment as there is no obligation to complete enquiry forms before use.

Once a specific product type has been selected, the comprehensive data driven software automatically adds available features through a series of tick boxes whilst ‘Read More’ tips indicate alternative available options. Throughout the selection process ‘Information Icons’ can be clicked for detailed descriptions - many with images or graphical illustrations that clarify criteria such as mounting position, mounting design, shaft style, materials and more. As the user moves through the process, ‘Warning triangles’ indicate which specification elements need to be addressed to complete the selection.

The comprehensive range of NORD DRIVESYSTEMS products that are accessible through the configurator includes, but is not restricted to, BLOCK helical inline, parallel shaft, helical bevel and worm geared motors; NORDBLOC.1 helical inline and helical bevel geared motors; and UNIVERSAL SI and UNIVERSAL SMI worm geared motors. Capacitive proximity switches.

With its new range of capacitive products, Leuze electronic is introducing contactless, wear-free switches which are resistant to electromagnetic influences, interference and contaminants in the air such as dust.

The capacitive switches are available in cylindrical or cubic designs with flush and non-flush mounting options to suit the widest range of applications. Due to their semiconductor technology they have an extremely long life expectancy, regardless of the detection and switching frequency. Whether solid, liquid or granular - capacitive sensors are capable of detecting various objects independently of their material and shape, without contact and without reaction.

They are particularly suitable for detecting objects in harsh and dirty environments due to their IP67 housing. Because of their ability to "see through" certain materials they are particularly suited for use in the packaging industry, detecting products in outer packaging and behind container walls, checking and monitoring fill levels for completeness.

Changes at the board!

The board of directors of Kennametal Inc., has appointed Christopher (Chris) Rossi as president and chief executive officer and has named him a director. Chris succeeds Ron De Feo whom the board has appointed executive chairman of the board. Both appointments are effective August 1, 2017.

Rossi previously served as the chief executive officer of Dresser-Rand at Siemens from September 2015 through May 2017. Prior to that, Rossi held numerous leadership positions at Dresser-Rand Group Inc., its affiliates and predecessor companies since he joined in 1987, including executive vice president of global operations, vice president of technology and business development and executive vice president of global aftermarket sales. Rossi holds a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and an MBA in corporate finance and operations management from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business.

High Power Regenerative DC Load.

The ELR9000 HP Series of regenerative, programmable electronic DC loads has been introduced by Intepro Systems. This latest version of their ELR Series is designed to accommodate three-phase mains between 360V – 528V AC. The increased power density of HP Series units provides load ratings of up to 15kW in a single 3U rack-mounted instrument. A master-slave bus can be used to connect as many as 16 units in parallel to test loads of up to 240 kW. A unique feature of the ELR 9000 HP Series is an integral, grid-synchronized inverter designed to return up to 94.5% of the load test energy back to the grid. 
“The wide input voltage of the new ELR 9000 HP Series of electronic DC loads is especially important to our customers who have manufacturing facilities in multiple global locations,” said Gerard Sheehan, Intepro's Chief Technical Officer. “In addition, the regenerative output is even more valuable in these higher power density units, eliminating the need for expensive cooling systems used by conventional air- and water-cooled loads to dissipate energy as heat.”

The ELR 9000 HP Series offers four common regulation modes: constant voltage, constant current, constant resistance and constant power. The FPGA-based operational controls include a function generator and a table-based regulation circuit for the simulation of non-linear internal resistances. Intepro’s PowerStar 6 software package enables the creation of test routines using a drag-and-drop menu where coding can be performed without programming.

Acquisition to strengthen digital grid portfolio and focus.

ABB to acquire the mission-critical communication business of the KEYMILE Group to strengthen its communication networks portfolio.

The acquisition will bring with it key products, software and service solutions, as well as research and development expertise. These will further enhance ABB’s digital offering, ABB Ability, by adding extremely reliable communications technologies that are essential to maintain today’s dynamic and complex digital electrical grids. The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2017. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the deal.

Users driving digital transformation.

We always enjoy these user-group events because they offer the opportunity for Editors/Journalists to meet those who use equipment rather than those who make the instrumentation. Their focus is not necessarily the same as that of the manufacturers. We have been attending Emerson events (#EMREX) for many years now and they do have a special atmosphere. Indeed the user groups of each manufacturer have a different feel and in some ways present the ethos generated by the ethos of the supplier company.

TFT LCD Modules.

Diamond Electronics has introduced new 2.4" & 2.8" TFT LCD Modules from Winstar Display Co. Ltd.* The WF24E and WF28E modules are small format TFT displays with full colour 240 x 320 RGB TFT LCD modules and have diagonal sizes of 2.4 & 2.8 inches respectively.

Research for new tesla coil sesigns.

Thomson Industries has donated a high-precision ball screw assembly to The Geek Group National Science Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to help develop revolutionary designs of Tesla Coils (TC). An ambitious R&D program has been initiated there to discover new uses for the TC with help from a new automated process for winding coils.

Thomson was selected because of their top-notch application engineering support and breadth of product offerings, which enabled delivery of an optimal complete ball screw assembly. That Thomson ball screw assembly will help The Geek Group’s high-energy engineering team convert from typical manual winding to a much faster, more accurate automated process for winding thousands of coils required to conduct their experiments.

A Thomson customer support engineer guided The Geek Group engineering team in selecting the exact configuration to best match their needs. The product selected was a quick-install ball screw assembly that avoids any precision problems that may result from assembling components on site. The final configuration consisted of a Thomson FSI Style ball nut along with an eight-foot-long ball screw just under an inch in diameter.

"We set our IRC team on the task of finding the best linear motion technology in the industry,” said Chris Boden, CEO of The Geek Group. “The team, composed of a couple hundred experts from many science and technology disciplines, analysed about a dozen different products and concluded that only the Thomson drive could do exactly what we needed and exactly how we wanted to do it”.

The TC production program has already begun, and The Geek Group has plans for experimenting with larger coils in the future.
