Industrial cybersecurity in the US national strategy.

A Bloomberg LIVE conference in Houston, (TX USA), was addressed by Patrick J. Gouhin, Executive Director and CEO of the International Society of Automation (ISA).  He spoke on the future of cybersecurity in the US oil and gas sector, urged energy executives to take action now to protect their facilities and operations from cyberattack.

“Given the increasing number of cyberattacks on oil and gas facilities, the importance of these facilities to the economy and national security, and the fact that there are effective cybersecurity standards for the energy industry available today, the time to act is now—not years in the future,” he emphasised, before an audience of approximately 100 senior technology executives and US government officials.

Gouhin participated in a panel session that examined: the need for solutions that can both prevent a cyberattack from occurring and mitigate the damage if one does occur; and the future of cybersecurity strategies and defenses in the oil and gas industry given the absence of mandated standards and regulations. 

He pointed to ISA’s series of industrial automation and control system (IACS) security standards— adopted internationally as ISA/IEC 62443—as a flexible framework for preventing and limiting potentially devastating cyber damage to the industrial systems and networks used in oil and gas facilities and other critical infrastructure.

Developed by leading international cybersecurity experts from industry, government and academia, ISA/IEC 62443 addresses industrial cybersecurity vulnerabilities across all key industry sectors and is regarded as the world’s only consensus-based series of IACS security standards.

IACS, such as supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA), are relied upon to monitor and control the operation of industrial machinery and associated devices. Because most IACS are not designed to ensure resilience against cyberwarfare, an IACS cyberattack can impair and disable safe operations of industrial facilities. The consequences—which can include plant shutdowns, widespread power blackouts, explosions, chemical leaks and more—can place national and economic security as well as lives, personal safety and the environment at risk.

ISA/IEC 62443 enables owners and operators of critical infrastructure to achieve and maintain IACS security improvements through a lifecycle that integrates design, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement.

ISA’s expertise in industrial cybersecurity standards has been honed through experience. Gouhin pointed out that ISA has been developing industry standards for more than 67 years, with 150 different standards in its portfolio, representing the knowledge of more than 4,000 industry experts worldwide.

Aiding US voluntary plan.
He explained that while the US does not legally require implementation of industrial cybersecurity standards and best practices, the government has developed a voluntary plan to follow. The plan, known as the US Cybersecurity Framework, serves as a how-to guide for American industry and operators and owners of critical infrastructure to strengthen their cyber defenses.

Representatives of both ISA and its affiliate, the Automation Federation, served as expert consultants to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)—an agency of the US Department of Commerce—as it coordinated the development of the framework. The ISA/IEC 62443 series of IACS security standards are key components of the framework recommendations, which were made public in early 2014.

ISA’s leadership in industrial cybersecurity also prompted the US Army National Guard to select ISA as an industry partner. Last year, ISA provided control systems security training at the National Guard’s Cyber Shield 2016 exercise at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. More than 900 soldiers, airmen, Marines, sailors and civilians representing 47 states and territories participated at the event to assess their skills in responding to cyber-incidents on the National Guard computer network.

Furthermore, the Automation Federation is the host organization for the LOGIIC (Linking Oil and Gas Industry to Improve Cybersecurity) Program, an ongoing collaboration of major oil and natural gas companies and the US Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate. LOGIIC undertakes collaborative research and development projects to improve the level of cybersecurity in critical systems of interest to the oil and natural gas sector.

Rotary angle measurement.

Efficient automated label printing.

The new Data Automation app from Brady Workstation uses already available data to automatically create identification labels for components, cables, products and packages.

Brady Workstation Data Automation is an application that, once set up, receives data from databases such as ERP, LIMS or SAP systems to automatically print the right identification labels. The app eliminates the need to manually copy or retype data that are already available in company systems, which saves time and reduces the risk of typing errors. Data Automation maps selected data to label formats created in Brady Workstation and sends the label directly to pre-selected printers for completion. The app also informs users when their selected Brady printer needs a new label cartridge or ink ribbon to complete the job.

Circular connectors.

Harting has expanded its family of M12 PushPull circular connectors with a number of new versions designed to meet the growing needs of today’s railway sector.

The railway transportation market is continuing to grow steadily, both for long-distance travel and for urban area rail networks. Trains are also being equipped with modern information systems and entertainment media, which calls for on-board electronics with more space-saving solutions.

The new models in the M12 PushPull connector family meet these requirements by offering new housing and connector configurations. Until now, this connection has been offered only in straight male versions with A, D and X coding, but the range has now been rounded out with new housing shapes and female versions.

In keeping with these additions, there will also be a device-side flange socket. Like all new Harting M12 flange sockets, it is suitable for the M12 PushPull devices but is also reverse compatible with the traditional screw locking connection.

In order to alleviate the tight conditions aboard trains where space is at a premium, all M12 PushPull codings are available in an angled housing form. Side cable exit permits the distance of the housing door to the switch or switches to be reduced.

Wireless gas detector with long life battery.

United Electric Controls has a WirelessHART gas detector that can monitor presence of harmful gases for more than five years without a battery replacement. The new Vanguard WirelessHART gas detector reduces monitoring costs and increases safety by eliminating the need for costly and fixed wiring.

Potential applications
Once on a wireless network, the Vanguard detector can serve many gas monitoring functions, including the following:
• Wireless remote and local gas detection, such as tank farms, oil and gas production facilities, refineries, pipelines, abandoned wells and waste treatment plants.
• Temporary situations in which the cost of setting up a wired solution is completely unfeasible, such as a maintenance turnaround, natural disaster, security breach or plant expansion.

They developed the Vanguard detector in response to the market need for a cost-effective way to add multiple gas measurement points. Innovative new servomotor technology expands further.

AMP (Applied Motion Products Inc.) has launched EtherCAT® communications versions of its innovative StepSERVO™ closed loop stepper technology products.

Available with full support from Mclennan, AMP’s European distribution partner, the range covers three EtherCAT network intelligent drives with continuous output current of 3, 5 and 10 Amps together with 14 matched StepSERVO stepper motors from NEMA size 11 to 34. The venue is the historic Castello di Belgioioso. It is believed to have been constructed for Galeazzo II (1320 – 4 August 1378), who had it built on the extensive landholdings of his family (Visconti - sometime rulers of Milan) in the second half of the 14th century. This historic monument now offers a stunning setting for public and private events, including weddings and company parties.

Industrial software roadshow for Cork.

Wonderware Ireland is hosting a special event at Fota Island Resort, Cork (IRL), to give manufacturers and system integrators an exclusive look at the company’s new developments.
Taking place on the 29th March 2017, the Next Generation Roadshow will explore Wonderware’s latest innovations, as well as providing delegates with a greater understanding of the future of the industrial landscape and how they can ensure they are prepared for it.

The main event will run from 8:45am until 12:55pm, before heading into the afternoon hands-on session which will run until 5:00pm. The whole day is free to attend. Delegates must register in advance.
The day will begin with a look into the digitisation advancements within industrial automation, before discussing the OT (Operational Technology) networking landscape and managing operational Big Data.

Wonderware Ireland will also introduce its Next Generation SCADA - their upcoming release developed to provide greater simplicity, flexibility and scope. The Next Generation SCADA’s improvements include an enhanced UI visual experience with “out-of-the-box” content and process visualisation standards, web-based access and a heightened ability to access and aggregate IIoT data.

An optional afternoon session will then see Systems Architects take attendees through a practical workshop. This will allow them to get hands-on with the technologies that are bringing connected and future-proof industrial environments into fruition, before finishing with an opportunity to discuss issues one-on-one with Wonderware’s team of technical experts.

David Staunton has been appointed as director of global managed services with Zenith to help meet increased demand for its automation and manufacturing execution system (MES) services.
