Secure remote connections to the network edge.

WeConnect delivers easy to use and reliable connections to industrial equipment.
WeConnect is a new solution that Westermo has developed to allow connectivity to remote networks using the internet. Clearly security and reliability are critical for this type of service, but even more important is the ease of use as the beneficiary of this service will not necessarily be an IT expert.

WeConnect creates a secure network between remote assets using strong encryption techniques, typically found in the financial sector. Using it a PC, smartphone, or tablet becomes part of the remote network as if it were actually at that location. For example, a service engineer can use the everyday industrial software application and connect from the desk to the PLC, HMI or any other type of device that is on the remote network. With an easy way to remotely access devices, time, money and energy on costly site visits can be saved.

Set-up is easy and just requires an internet connection of any kind. It does not matter what type of SIM-card is available, nor if there is ADSL, VDSL2, cellular or even a satellite connection; as long as the internet can be reached. As the Westermo routers create the connection to WeConnect themselves there is no need to have any public IP addresses, or create holes in the external firewall; perfect if your remote asset is on an existing factory Ethernet network.

They have designed WeConnect specifically for the industrial market and one example of this is the ability of WeConnect to cope with identical IP addresses on every remote site. The user just clicks on the active site in the web-portal and the relevant traffic from the user’s PC will be forwarded to that particular site. This setting is unique per user so that multiple technicians can be logged into different, or the same, sites.

With WeConnect Westermo offers reliable connectivity when it is needed. Part of this is due to the fact that it uses one of the most reliable global platform providers on the market, making it a very scalable and multi-resilient solution. The other benefit of this solution is that it can be configured to provide separate secure networks for each customer with no IP address restrictions or risk of data leakage from another user.

Range of detector switches.

An extended product range of detector switches is now available from knitter-switch.

Detector-switches are used for recognition of variation or manipulation of movable or removable parts. This can be caps, covers, or connections. For example they are used for printers to notice empty paper tray. Or they are responsible to recognize any manipulation at the smoke detector.

The switches of the series DT and DTS are available in various configurations: normally open or normally closed (NO or NC), horizontal or vertical, SMT or through hole technology. They comply with highest requirements: for operating temperature up to 85 C and up to 3.000.000 operations.

The detector switches – as well as the complete wide range of standard DIL, tact, rotary encoder, toggle and push-button switches are available directly from knitter-switch and a number of distributors throughout Europe.

Wireless nominations being evaluated!

The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute is currently evaluating candidates for the 2016 ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation Award. 

The award was established to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of industrial wireless communications, specifically efforts that help to broaden the industry’s understanding and application of industrial wireless technology.

High power modular drives.

Control Techniques has extended its range of high power modular drives. Both its Unidrive M and Powerdrive F300 variable speed drive ranges are now available in the larger frame size 11, providing a flexible method of building compact, reliable high-power solutions.

Paralleled together, Unidrive M can control asynchronous and permanent magnet motors in systems up to 2.8 MW (4,200 hp). The new frame 11 is a 250 kW (400 hp) module that allows system builders to create high power solutions with the smallest number of components, keeping both footprint and costs to a minimum.

Unidrive M differentiates itself on performance with extremely fast current control algorithms and high switching frequencies. Active Front End (AFE) solutions deliver unparalleled torque precision and power quality.

The Unidrive M modules can be paralleled into a wide range of flexible solutions to solve all system needs including Active Front End and multi-pulse rectifier configurations. They can be controlled by Control Techniques’ Unidrive M600, M700, M701 and M702 controllers.

Positioning drive for manufacturing systems.

The EMCA positioning drive from Festo, consists of a maintenance-free and wear-resistant brushless DC motor with integrated power and control electronics. The integrated drive system is compact, avoids long motor cables, improves electromagnetic compatibility and reduces installation workload and space requirements, while built-in monitoring functions ensure safety and reliability.

Designed for industrial use in demanding manufacturing environments, applications include machines, devices and systems used in materials transport and conveying, printing, packaging and labelling, as well as textiles and electronics manufacturing. Its compact and high performance design have been recognised with a Product Design Award from one of the world's most celebrated and valued design competitions, the iF Design Awards.

The EMCA is equipped with a 24 V DC power supply and senses absolute position using a single-turn encoder as standard, or optionally via a multi-turn displacement encoder with buffering. An integrated holding brake is optional, as are a range of external gear units. Free to download Festo Configuration Tool (FCT) software makes parameterisation and commissioning quick and easy via an Ethernet interface, with 64 freely programmable position sets. Available in two motor lengths and power classes, the EMCA can deliver peak torque of up to 0.91 Nm, has a maximum rotational speed of 3,500 RPM and can reach peak power output of up to 200 W. The motor housing provides IP54 degree of protection as standard, with IP65 available as an option, for direct installation in the system. The EMCA also supports the safety function, "safe torque off (STO)", ensuring there is no risk to the user’s system from the motor continuing to rotate in case of emergency.

The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute has announced that Yokogawa Electric Corporation has successfully achieved ISA100 Wireless certification for its latest ISA100 Wireless Stack implementation, the F9092RB. The ISA100 Wireless certification provides assurance that the devices will interoperate in any ISA100 Wireless compliant network.

The F9092RB represents several improvements over Yokogawa’s most recently certified ISA100 Wireless stack implementation, the FN110. It is now interoperable with any ISA100 gateway, and it can now more easily integrate with other sensor vendor’s devices. View the certification here.

Both the F9092RB and the FN110 are built to be used as drop-in modules, easily extending wireless features to field devices. The high-performance, built-in wireless communication modules are compact, lightweight, and offer excellent radio sensitivity with low power consumption.

Ultra-miniature, high-precision pressure and temperature transducer.

The Paine 310-38-0050 Series Transducer, introduced by Emerson,  provides increased reliability when making pressure and temperature measurements in downhole oil and gas drilling and production operations. The transducer has the smallest footprint available with an outside diameter of just .93 centimetres (.37 inches) to save critical downhole tool space.

Downhole drilling operations must measure pressure, temperature and other variables to optimise the drilling process and ensure safety. These measurements are typically made with a variety of downhole tools, either mounted just above the drill bit to provide continuous measurement while drilling, or as separate tools inserted into the drill hole on a periodic basis. Once drilling is complete and production begins, these measurements are needed to optimise throughput, maximise uptime and ensure safety.

In all of these applications, space is at a premium and high reliability is required. The environment is extremely harsh with high temperatures and pressures, corrosive drilling fluids and high vibration. Rugged components with small form factors are required to support smaller tool sizes, along with increased pressures and temperatures as holes become deeper.

To address these issues, the Paine 310-38-0050 transducer provides both temperature and pressure measurements in the smallest and most rugged form factor possible. It supports measurements up to 25kpsi (1723 BAR) and temperature up to 425F (218C) to cover the wide range of downhole operating environments.

The 310-38-0050 transducer provides well operators with critical pressure and temperature data for smoother and more efficient downhole operations with increased reliability and reduction of downtime. It improves upon prior solutions by offering a much smaller from factor while still providing the required measurements.

Software for 3D Data Exchange.

The current version of the conversion software “3D Evolution 4.0 SP2” makes it possible for the first time to automatically take over material specifications during the JT data exchange.

The SP2 version of the universal converter “3D Evolution 4.0” from Core Technologie offers innovative optimisation of the workflow during data exchange: When generating JT/PLMXML files the complete material specification is now automatically taken over. 3D Evolution is a conversion software for multi-CAD environments that enables a loss free data exchange for all major systems and formats, such as Siemens Nx, Catia, Solidworks, Inventor and Creo as well as Parasolid, Acis and STEP.

The latest version of the innovative conversion software is a huge timesaver for users especially in case of large assemblies with several hundred components and different materials.

The current material table in the supplier portal is used as a text file template for the conversion process. Versatility, Capability and Economy in Industrial Process Monitoring.

A significant upgrade to United Electric Controls' One Series line of explosion-proof, programmable transmitters and switches has appeared. The new line compresses all of the functionality of the preceding line into only five models while adding new operational, programming and diagnostics capabilities.

United Electric Controls One Series instruments provide unique alternatives to both conventional mechanical switches and transmitters for controlling operations such pumps and compressors, lubrication oil monitoring, hydraulic pressure, filter status and other industrial applications based on temperature or pressure. The new One Series line offers these advantages by providing switch only, transmitter only and hybrid transmitter-switch models.

New application versatility
Customers choose from among the following new One Series instruments based on their requirements for integrated switching and sensing, intrinsic safety, power level and power source.

  • For integrated switching and transmitter, model 1XTXSW provides a loop-powered 24 VDC HART enabled smart-transmitter, with two programmable set point fail-safe solid state relays rated at 0-280 VAC/VDC @ 0.3 A.
  • For high voltage, low current switching only, model 1XSWHL provides a 2-wire input powered switch for 110 and 230 VAC and 125 VDC logic solver inputs, with a programmable set point switch rated at 70 – 240 VAC/VDC at 0.1 A max.
  • For low voltage, low current, intrinsically safe switching only, model 1XSWLL provides a 2-wire input powered switch for 24 and 48 VDC logic solver inputs, with a programmable set point switch rated at 7.8 – 50 VDC at 0.1 A max.
  • For high voltage, high current switching only, model 1XSWHH provides a 4-wire externally powered programmable set point switch rated at 70 – 240 VAC @ 0.15 - 10 A
  • For use as a transmitter only, model 1XTX00 provides a loop-powered 24 VDC HART enabled smart transmitter compliant to the NAMUR NE 43 standard.

Both of the 2-Wire input powered switch models mentioned above (model 1XSWLL and 1XSWHL) utilize existing wiring and control schemes and can provide a drop-in replacement for mechanical switches. No wiring or control system programming changes are required, providing easy and cost-effective plant upgrades.

New operability
All One Series models have extensive diagnostics, programmability and trip management capabilities. Configurable I Am Working (IAW™) self-diagnostics provide piece of mind that the instrument is functioning properly by communicating with the control system using a dedicated discrete fail-safe-open output. The integral digital process display shows what is happening in the process at a glance. Powerful plugged port diagnostics flag potentially dangerous sensor clogs and memorizes the highest and lowest process variables for process troubleshooting and learning.

A programmable set point and deadband provides versatile, accurate and repeatable alarm and shutdown switching using the integral keypad. HART® enabled models provide full access and control of all transmitter and switching functions using any registered HART communicator. A programmable trip delay, which holds off the trip decision for tenths of seconds up to several minutes, provides operators time to gather more data before initiating a shutdown. Nuisance trip filtering eliminates unwanted nuisance trips and unnecessary alarms; and an electronic trip counter records trips for up to two relays to assist with process adjustments and troubleshooting.

Safe disconnect in accordance with IEC 62626-1.

Two safety switches (load disconnect switches) from R. Stahl, Sers 8146/5-V37 and 8150/5-V37,  give users a wide range of products that comply with IEC/EN 62626-1, class 1.

Specifically applying to the forced electrical disconnection of safety switches, this standard has come into effect in December 2014. It stipulates requirements for encapsulated load disconnect switches up to 1,000 V AC that are used to disconnect electrical equipment, such as machines and equipment, for the purpose of maintenance and cleaning. The new requirements go far beyond those in IEC/EN 60947-3. The IEC/EN 62626-1 distinguishes between switching devices for general use (class 0) and those for rough, heavy-duty conditions (class 1).

It is advisable to use class 1 switching devices in hazardous areas. Series 8146/5-V37 and 8150/5-V37 switches are built into robust and corrosion-resistant enclosures made of GRP or stainless steel. They come with flameproof-enclosed 3- or 6-pole switch contacts and are certified for use in zones 1 and 2, 21 and 22. The product range includes switchgear for rated operational currents between 10 A and 180 A and an operating voltage between 230 V and 690 V. Their motor switching capacity is equivalent to AC 3 and AC 23 according to IEC/EN 60947-3.

A 20 ms leading auxiliary contact ensures a motor switch-off even when used with frequency converters. The integration of the auxiliary contact into the load switch allows for operating only one rotary actuator, resulting in improved usability. The load disconnect switches provide IP66 ingress protection and are designed for a temperature range of -40 °C to +70 °C.

In addition to the forced opening of the main contacts, easy handling and a special safety mechanism ensure maximum operating safety: the cover is locked in "off" position, the switch handle can be locked with three padlocks. Machine drives in hazardous areas can therefore be stopped quickly and safely to facilitate cleaning a plant, repair operations or other service work, without needing a trained electrician.

Industry 4.0 & IIoT papers!

Harting has published two new ‘whitepapers’ for businesses planning to implement ‘Industry 4.0’ methods and ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ networks.

The first paper, by Dr Karsten Walther and Dr Jan Regtmeir, makes the case for virtualisation using Linux Containers.

The second defines the practical uses of Linux Containers and describes how to implement the technique using Harting’s MICA (Modular Industry Computing Architecture).

2-wire loop powered operating device for process analysis sensors.

SMARTMAC 200 W is a 2-wire loop powered operating device with HART 7 communication to the SMARTPAT series just introduced by Krohne . The target industries for SMARTMAC include all industries that use SMARTPAT sensors or accessories: the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food & beverage sectors as well as power plants, semiconductor and water/wastewater applications.

SMARTPAT is a series of process analytical technology, its highlight are the process analysis sensors with integrated transmitter technology: each sensor is directly connected to the process control system via 4…20 mA/HART without the use of an external transmitter. Nevertheless, there is still a demand for a convenient operating device on site. Therefore, SMARTMAC 200 W was developed as an optional 2-wire loop-powered operating device.

With SMARTMAC 200 W, SMARTPAT sensors can be read, calibrated and configured “online” at the measuring point. It features HART 7 communication and shows clear and configurable diagnostics according to NAMUR NE 107. With the replacement function, the connected SMARTPAT sensor can easily be exchanged as all sensor settings can be copied for the new sensor, including 4…20 mA parameter and TAG identification.

USB data connectors.

The latest addition to Cliff Electronics rapidly expanding range of XLR-Format Feedthrough Data Connectors is a USB Type - C format socket. This new high speed connector offers system integrators and panel builders a number of useful features.

The Cliff USB Type - C format socket offers greater flexibility and smaller form factors than previous generations of USB connectors and provides designers with an ultra-slim USB-C connector reducing the number of cables required for system interconnection. The new connector is capable of supporting higher data speeds of up to 10 Gbps, data compatible with USB 3.1. It is rated up to 100W for power supply delivery or charging portable devices. USB Type - C connectivity offers end users the potential to reduce the number of sockets per device and is forecast to be the future connector of choice for many electronic devices currently requiring multiple sockets for power, data and video connections.

Their growing range of feed-through connectors  are packaged in the widely used 24mm diameter XLR connector format and are available in black plastic or with a rugged die cast aluminium fascia finished in nickel or black to enhance the high quality, high performance and prestige image of this new product range.

Other models in the range provide Digital and Optical Feed-Through connectivity in formats including USB3 to USB3 in all gender changing configurations - A-A, A-B and B-A. Also available are all popular data and Ethernet connectors including USB 2.0 and 3.0, LC and SC fibre (Duplex & Simplex), UTP and FTP RJ45s in both Cat6 and Cat5e (shielded and unshielded), USB “gender” changers, Toslink, RCA Phono and HDMI and blanking plates. Further options will continue to be introduced throughout 2016 and custom design enquiries are welcomed.

All versions, metal and plastic, share the same features and dimensions and offer a complete range of very cost effective audio, data, and fibre connectors, all of which can both front or rear mounted into industry standard 24mm XLR connector mounting holes. The new FT Series are simple to mount into any panel designed to accept XLR connectors including instrumentation, control and rack panels, wall-plates, etc. For ease of assembly the Cliff FT Series are available with standard or countersunk mounting holes. Bezels are available in 7 colours to identify the function of FT connectors when fitted to a control panel

The FT Series offers true feed-through connection, allowing standard cabling to be used to connect at both front and rear, eliminating the need to solder or terminate the connections and simplifying and speeding up assembly.

Cliff’s FT series has already found widespread use in a multitude of system integration applications for custom I/O solutions. Typical applications include broadcast, AV installations, systems integration, home theatre, automation, solar power and a growing range of industrial applications including instrumentation, industrial control and data acquisition.
