Measuring CO2 Concentration up to 50,000 ppm.

The modular CO2 transmitter EE870 from E+E Elektronik now measures CO2 concentration up to 5% CO2 (50,000 ppm). The extended measuring range makes the EE870, consisting of CO2 probe, conversion board and connection cable, even more versatile.

The interchangeable CO2 probe EE871 with auto-calibration uses an infrared measuring principle (dual wavelength NDIR operation principle) that is particularly insensitive to pollution. Aging effects are compensated automatically, resulting in excellent long-term stability. Thus the CO2 transmitter is ideal for demanding applications.

The multi-point CO2 and temperature adjustment ensures high accuracy over the entire temperature working range of -40...60 °C (-40...140 °F). Additionally, the IP65 probe enclosure with interchangeable PTFE filter offers excellent protection against pollution. Therefore, the CO2 probe can be used in harsh environments such as in agriculture (stables, hatchers, incubators).

The compact design, the M12 connector and the optional mounting flange allow for fast installation or replacement of the CO2 probe. An optional radiation shield is available for outdoor applications.

The measured data range of up to 5 % CO2 (50,000 ppm) is available on the analog current or voltage output and on the Modbus RTU interface of the conversion board. An optional kit facilitates easy configuration and adjustment of the EE871 probe.

Photochemistry and Photophysics examined.

The first annual Edinburgh Instruments’ Lectureship in Photochemistry and Photophysics at Duke University (NC USA) was held April 29th, 2016, with great success.

The plenary speaker, Prof. Richard Eisenberg of the University of Rochester, presented his talk, titled “Fuel from Water: The Light-Driven Generation of Hydrogen.” The lecture was attended by approximately 100 faculty, students, and researchers from Duke University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University, along with a post-lecture “meet-the-speaker” event allowing attendees to interact and chat with the speaker and each other over pizza and snacks.

The annually held event, sponsored by Edinburgh Instruments and Duke University, and organised by Professor Michael J. Therien, looks to become the leading annual photochemistry lecture series in the United States and is open to the public to attend.

The 2017 speaker for the event will be Professor Harry B. Gray, from California Institute of Technology.

Thermal imager + Multimeter.

Thermal imagers are invaluable to help quickly troubleshoot electrical equipment, panels, and transformers but electricians and maintenance technicians often do not have access to one when they need it. Fluke has introduced the 279 FC TRMS Thermal Multimeter, the first test tool to integrate a full-featured true RMS (TRMS) digital multimeter (DMM) with a thermal camera in one device to speed troubleshooting. It is also a member of the Fluke Connect® family of wireless test tools.

The Fluke 279 FC allows technicians to quickly and safely check for hot spots in fuses, wires, insulators, connectors, splices, and switches with the imager, and then troubleshoot and analyse issues with the DMM. By combining two powerful test tools into one, electricians and technicians can carry fewer tools and have a higher level of confidence they have the tools handy to solve problems.

This thermal multimeter features 15 electrical measurement functions including AC/DC voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitance, diode test, min/max and frequency. The optional iFlex® clamp can wrap around conductors and wires in tight, hard-to-reach spaces and expands its measurement capabilities to include AC current up to 2500A. The 3.5inch (8.89cm) full-colour LCD screen makes for easy, clear viewing of images.

The wireless 279 FC is part of Fluke Connect - a system of wireless test tools that communicate via the Fluke Connect app, or Fluke Connect Assets software, a cloud-based solution that gathers measurements to provide a comprehensive view of critical equipment status - allowing technicians to record and share both thermal images and electrical measurements in real time via their smartphones or tablets and automatically upload them to the cloud. Wireless module with Merged Serial and Ethernet.

The WNM Wireless Network Module from Moore Industries has been redesigned with a new, sleeker housing and now incorporates both Serial and Ethernet communications in one model. Originally released in 2011, this has been an accurate and reliable solution for sending process signals between remote field sites. It provides a low-cost wireless communications link between field sites that are in rugged or impassable terrain, with a single unit transmitting for up to 30 miles and the ability to act as a repeater for a virtually unlimited transmission range.

The bi-directional WNM employs Spread Spectrum Frequency Hopping technology to avoid interference problems caused by crowded radio spectrums. This technology allows multiple radio networks to use the same band while in close proximity. Operating at standard operating frequencies of 902-928MHz or 2.4-2.4835GHz, the WNM does not require a regulatory license and can typically be installed without performing costly RF site surveys.

When it is set in the Smart Switch Ethernet (SSE) mode, the WNM enhances the speed and reliability of data packet transmission by determining the most efficient path of broadcast (including direct to a single radio or to some or all radios in a network) on a packet-by-packet basis.

The unit is ideal for use with the Moore Industries NCS NET Concentrator System®, as well as other SCADA and distributed I/O systems. As a result of its redesign, the WNM now supports data communications networks that use Ethernet and serial (RS-485) communications in one model. In each WNM network, one module is set as a Master. This can be set to communicate with a single WNM remote unit in a Point-to-Point architecture or multiple WNM remote units in a Point-to-Multipoint architecture.

The modules are designed for long-distance data transmission; 902-928MHz units can transmit up to 30 miles, while 2.4-2.4835GHz units have a transmission range of up to 15 miles. The range can be extended indefinitely by using multiple WNM units as repeaters to relay signals. This also allows for the creation of WNM networks when a direct line of sight cannot be established.

It is easy to install and use, as it can be factory-configured to fit user specifications before being shipped. In addition, free PC configuration software allows end users to perform on-site configuration, parameter changes and add WNM modules to a network.

The WNM uses 128-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption, 32-bit CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error detection and ARQ (Automatic Resend Query) for robust and secure communications. The industrial DIN-rail mount metal enclosure also ensures that the WNM can be used in rugged environments, including ambient temperatures from -40°F to 167°F (-40°C to 75°C) and relative humidity of 5 to 95 percent.

Peristaltic metering pump enhanced.

Using PPCL’s equation-less, no-maths visual technology, Geometric Process Control (GPC), in the alarm review increases effectiveness, producing limits that already consider process operation and identifying early in the process issues that are usually only seen after the new limits have been put in place. This allows necessary changes to be investigated months earlier, while producing a set of limits consistent with this operation. These methods also increase the speed of the review, allowing smaller teams to perform most of the work independently and providing a common framework for communication, dramatically improving productivity.

Most approaches to alarms fail to consider process performance and capability. This leads to unacceptable operator performance and impaired operation or safety. Including historic process data in the alarm rationalization process is required to avoid these pitfalls. The size of the required datasets, and the difficulty of visualizing, let alone interrogating, this data using traditional methods has led us to adapt the parallel coordinate projection as the enabling technique for seeing the relationship between alarm limits and operating history, operating envelopes and operator response.

IS1+ Remote I/O system communicates ticks approval.

The latest generation of explosion-protected Remote I/O systems from R. Stahl, IS1+ for installation in zone 1 and zone 2 or Division 1 or Division 2, enables fast communication via Foundation Fieldbus High Speed Ethernet (FF HSE).

As the first product in its class, IS1+ has been acknowledged with the official "tick mark" for a FF HSE device following testing and registration by the FieldComm group. Featuring a transmission rate of up to 100 Mbit/s, the HSE standard has been designed by the Fieldbus Foundation – now a member of the FieldComm Group – especially with Remote I/O, wireless gateways, and similar applications in mind. FF HSE has more recently been further augmented by F-ROM (Foundation for Remote Operations Management) technology. F-ROM features a number of enhancements, which are all also supported by IS1+. These include special "RIO Function Blocks" for an effective transmission of large amounts of data, "Association Blocks" for comfortable offline configuration as, and special "HART Transducer Blocks", which – for the first time ever – enable an integration of HART field devices into FF architectures.

Remote I/O solutions with F-ROM technology are ideally suited to supplement fieldbus installations with smart H1 field devices. Using F-ROM-enabled Remote I/Os, conventional and HART field devices can be integrated into fieldbus installations alongside H1 devices. As a result, the installation effort is significantly reduced. In addition to FF HSE and F-ROM, IS1+ supports other Ethernet-based protocols such as Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET for cutting-edge, fast communication in process plants with hazardous areas. Users also continue to benefit from the general advantages of the IS1+ system, namely hot-swapping capabilities for all modules in Zone 1 and Division 1, multi-functional I/O modules and preventive maintenance messages according to NE107. Moreover, R. Stahl offers a standard warranty extension for three years free of charge on all IS1+ systems.

Wireless rotating torque sensor.

The Basic Line Torque Sensor from Kistler InstrumentsType 4520A Torque Sensor, uses FM wireless technology to transmit the signal from the rotating shaft and so eliminates the signal distortion and loss inherent in slip-ring sensors. 
The maintenance free, long term reliability advantages of the contactless signal transmission do not come at a premium price but at around the same cost as slip-ring types.

The Kistler Type 4520A, a strain gauge torque sensor for use at speeds up to 10,000 rpm (ten thousand rpm), is available in ten ranges from 1 to 1,000 Nm all with ±10 V analogue signal output, a TTL speed signal at 60 pulses/rev, an overload capacity of 150% and an external 100% range check input are all standard. Moisture verification with NDIR measurement devices.

Pyroelectric detectors are used in gas analysis. Each gas can be detected using a very specific wavelength - the so-called absorption wavelength.

Moisture is often tested at the wavelengths 1.94 μm and 2.9 μm; however, in this case, the absorption wavelengths of CO2 overlap the signal: with these wavelengths, the moisture of the gas mixtures can actually only be determined using complex measurement equipment. With the right filters and a suitable light source it is also possible to achieve a reliable measurement with simple NDIR measurement devices.

Laser Components brings three new filters on the market that are selected in such a way as to significantly reduce the crosstalk to other gases to achieve uncomplicated measurements with NDIR measurement devices.

  • For the measurement of methane (CH4): lCWL = 7.91 μm ±160 nm

Accurate monitoring of indoor air quality.

Commissioning and maintenance of dew-point transmitters.

Michell Instruments has upgraded its diagnostic tool – the Universal Communications Kit – to enable users of their Easidew and Pura ranges to carry out on-site checks and reconfigure their dew-point transmitters simply and easily.

The upgraded tool comes with new application software which is backwards compatible with previous versions. This means users can use the upgraded tool with older transmitters, making it easier for service engineers who will not need to carry different pieces of kit.

The communications kit allows users to check and configure transmitters via application software installed on a PC. This allows maintenance engineers to:
  •       Digitally measure and display moisture and temperature readings for on-site transmitter spot-checking
  •       Reconfigure the transmitter output units, range and fault settings to match requirements of the process


The complete diagnostic tool is packaged in a convenient carry case and includes the software, USB cable and transmitter docking station. It is powered from a PC USB port, which, in turn, powers and receives a digital signal from the Michell dew-point transmitter.

Intelligent inventory management!

Anglia Components has launched a new intelligent inventory management service offering vibrant electronics manufacturers a flexible, instantly accessible inventory of commodity components on an invoice at usage basis to support their growth.
