Steam conditioning valve for Europe.

Fisher™ TBX combines pressure and temperature control in a single valve; helps avoid costly damage, and prevents start-up delays, excessive noise and vibration

Emerson Process Management has introduced to Europe the Fisher™ TBX steam conditioning valve, which combines precise pressure and temperature control in a single turbine bypass valve. The Fisher TBX is designed to optimise operating performance and reliability in the most severe steam applications, avoid potential damage to steam turbines or boilers, prevent start-up delays, and increase plant efficiency.

Turbine bypass applications in cycling power plants demand the highest levels of valve reliability and performance. The Fisher TBX meets those expectations with technology to solve noise, vibration, sticking, leakages and pressure/temperature control challenges. Its self-diagnostic capability helps to maintain peak performance and prevent unexpected problems.

“Increased energy costs and the desire for more efficient cycling power plant operation requires better control of steam conditions,” said Benoit Wagner, Europe Engineering Director of Emerson’s Fisher Valves and Instruments business. “The Fisher TBX has been designed to enable efficient control of steam pressure and temperature, providing optimised performance supporting the daily cycling of a power plant.”

The rugged cage-guide design of the Fisher TBX enables it to handle full main steam pressure drops, while Whisper Trim™ technology eliminates the risk of excessive noise and vibration, which could cause structural damage and performance degradation. The valve’s proven and well-established Whisper Trim III cages and WhisperFlo trims help to attenuate noise by up to 40 dBA.

The Fisher TBX uses a thermally compensated hung trim design which accommodates rapid changes in temperature - as experienced during a turbine trip - to enable smooth, continuous operation. The cage is hardened for maximum life and can expand freely during thermal excursions. This prevents the valve plug from sticking and therefore avoids delays in turbine start-up. To prevent leakages affecting steam production when the turbine is operating, the Fisher TBX uses Fisher Bore Seal Trim technology, which achieves tighter shut-off.

Atomisation and vaporisation are key elements in any steam conditioning application. For efficient and effective temperature control, the Fisher TBX incorporates a manifold of variable geometry type AF nozzles which inject a fine mist into the downstream flow pattern. These nozzles are placed strategically, based upon extensive computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis, and their efficiency has been validated by field performance feedback. By reducing both temperature and steam pressure, the valve protects the reheater tubes, condenser and piping.

The typical Fisher TBX valve assembly includes a Fisher FIELDVUE™ DVC6200 digital valve controller. The FIELDVUE instrument’s diagnostic capabilities enable the valve to be monitored remotely and help maintain peak performance, without surprise failures. By comparing the present valve/actuator signature against previously stored signatures, operators can spot emerging performance problems, pinpoint a probable cause and take corrective action before the process is affected, potentially without leaving the control room.

Self-contained measurement camera.

The new TrueChrome Metrics camera from Stemmer Imaging provides fully integrated digital image capture and measurement for micro and macro scientific and industrial imaging applications with no need for a PC.

By plugging a mouse into the camera and connecting the HDMI camera output to a monitor, a wide range of multiform measurement tools allows measurements to be made on the high quality images produced. The camera is capable of delivering measurements with a resolution of 10 nanometres to provide outstanding metrology capabilities in the most demanding situations.

High quality images are generated by the 2.3 MPixel Sony Exmor CMOS sensor, which delivers live colour images at 1080p 60 fps to the connected monitor. This allows the user to smoothly manipulate live images without any monitor lag. Up to 6 MPixel still images and Full HD video sequences can be recorded directly and replayed from a connected SD card along with measurements. An image compare mode also allows for side-by-side comparison of live and previously stored images.

With exposure settings from 1 ms to up to 10 seconds and 20 levels of gain adjustment, the camera can be used for a host of applications including low light fluorescence imaging. An incredibly efficient 3D noise reduction system overcomes any increase in noise associated with longer exposure times to guarantee sharp images containing plenty of detail.

Automatic optimisation of camera settings optimises image quality whatever the application. Exposure time, saturation and automatic white balance produce high quality images with minimal need for manual adjustment whether for bright field bio imaging or dark field birefringent crystal imaging. Full manual control is available should it be needed.

The extremely powerful built-in measurement functionality includes: freehand lines, rectangles, polygons, circles, bicircles, angles, point-line distance and much more. In addition to the ability to measure point-line distance, angles, the length of curves and lines, the camera can measure the perimeter & area of enclosed features such as: rectangles, polygons, and circles. Results can be exported as Excel or text files to the SD card.

The camera can be readily calibrated and up to 10 calibration files can be saved for different microscope or lens configurations. Quantitative measurements can be made in µm, mm and cm to support both micro and macro applications.

The embedded user interface is incredibly easy to use. There are only two icons on screen, one for image capture and the other for the settings menu. The measurement menu appears simply by right clicking anywhere on the live image.

For users who prefer integrated PC control instead of stand alone operation, the camera can also be connected and controlled directly to a computer via a USB2.0 cable and is supplied with a professional imaging software application that provides complete camera control, advanced image processing functions such as high dynamic range, focus stacking and image stitching, as well as the full range of image measurements, archiving and management.

High current 4mm plugs and test leads.

JPR Electronics has announced the availability of the Schützinger GmbH range of products, including the 4mm high current lamella-basket plugs, widely used in test and measurement and instrumentation applications. pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation in Industry 4.0.

CyboSoft has released a Real-Time pH Process Modeling and Control Simulation Software package. It is the first in CyboSoft's virtual plant software family to help engineers learn how a pH process behaves, and how to effectively control this extremely nonlinear process to comply with EPA wastewater discharge codes and save chemical reagent.

CEO Dr. George Cheng said, "We are entering the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, where everything is supposed to be 'smart'. Ironically, about 90% industrial wastewater pH processes are still controlled by on-off Bang-Bang control, resulting in chemical reagent wastes, equipment corrosion, and environmental pollution. "Most process models are presented as mathematical equations or formulas, which are important but have limited usage. A real-time process model can be used as a virtual process to simulate a real process with minimal setup time and cost. Using a virtual plant software tool to solve real problems is a powerful and cost-effective way to help build a Smart Industry," Dr. Cheng added.

CyboSoft's pH process models are delivered as VIs (virtual instruments) in LabVIEW. The user can design and test their pH control systems using the pH process models running in real-time. For instance, a pH process model can run in a PC with real-time interface to a popular pH controller on the market or to an existing pH controller in service. The control results can be compared with the MFA pH control results obtained in MFA control simulations. The user can then take the results, estimate the chemical reagent savings, and show the potential return-on-investment (ROI) when applying for budget to buy the proper pH controller or control software to improve pH control performance.

Spring 2016 instrumentation training courses in USA.

L-101 Level School – Introductory
This introductory level course will start by providing maintenance and engineering personnel with a basic understanding of numerous level technologies. This basic portion will focus on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer's equipment. Following this introduction, we will proceed with in-depth training on Time of Flight (ToF) technologies that include a variety of radar types as well as ultrasonic level transmitters. This will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training.

L-101/L-102 Level School – Introductory/Level School - Advanced
Take a deep look into level measuring technology and learn about proper configuration, calibration and troubleshooting techniques in this comprehensive training course.

L-104 Free Space and Guided Wave Radar Level School
This is an introductory course (8 hours) for Free Space and Guided Wave Radar Level for maintenance and engineering personnel. We will dedicate a half day to each technology to give you a basic understanding of these level technologies. The class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training on a PTU® (Process Training Unit).

C-101 Pressure, Temperature and Calibration School
This introductory course will by provide maintenance and engineering personnel with a basic understanding of numerous pressure, temperature and calibration technologies. This basic portion will focus on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer's equipment, as well as the skills needed to set up and maintain such equipment. Introductions and lectures on the technologies will be followed with in-depth demonstrations and hands-on training exercises.

F-103 Coriolis School
This Coriolis flow course (8 hours) will start by providing maintenance and engineering personnel with a basic understanding of the Coriolis principle. This basic portion will focus on concepts applicable to virtually any manufacturer's equipment. Following this introduction, we will proceed with in-depth training on density and concentration measurements. This class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training in our PTU® (Process Training Unit).

DC-101 Field Device Tooling
After completing this course, participants will understand what Field Device Tooling means, what can be the scope and how it can be used to improve a process. Maintenance and engineering personnel will understand the basic concepts and lay out of FDT frames. Students will then be given detailed instruction of proper DTM maintenance to keep software running smoothly.

Engineer brings FEA expertise to resistor manufacturer.

To mark another successful year, power resistor manufacturer Cressall Resistors has appointed Damiano Natali as research and development and finite element analysis (FEA) engineer. Natali relocated from Genoa (I) to join the Leicester-based company (GB) after working as a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engineer for three years. He also has a PhD in Fluid Dynamics and Environmental Processes from the University of Genoa.

Since joining the team in November 2015, Natali has already developed a complex piece of R&D software that allows the department to accurately record test voltage waveforms. The software increases the productivity of the testing process, enhances the reliability of the outcomes and increases the precision with which Cressall meets customer specifications. The software, coined by Natali as CR Lightning also allows Cressall engineers to quickly verify that tests comply with BS EN 60060 requirements.

In a constantly evolving marketplace, ensuring its product range is both cost-effective and flexible enough to satisfy its customers' technical and commercial requirements is one of Cressall's main focuses. To stay ahead, the resistor manufacturer recently invested in advanced software packages, including Ansys Workbench. This, along with the guidance of Cressall engineers, will help Natali develop Cressall's innovative products even further, as well as optimising their existing product range.

    VA purgemeters with surface passivation for trace-level analysis.

    Optional surface treatment for all wetted parts to eliminate surface adsorption of chemically active compounds in analyser feed

    Krohne now offers the option of surface passivation for trace-level analysis for its variable area flow meters DK 32, DK 34 and DK 37.

    Trace-level analysis is used for providing evidence of very small concentrations in the range of ppm (parts per million) to ppb (parts per billion). Here, it is very important that none of the particles to be detected are already adsorbed in the sample feed line as this would lead to a delayed or even wrong analysis result. Examples are the measurement of H2S content in natural gas or oil, mercury, or NOx/SOx flue gas analysis in various industries.

    To avoid adsorption, sample feed lines, fittings and valves can be surface passivated. This can now also be applied to the DK 32, DK 34 and DK 37 all-metal purgemeters that are used for adjustment and monitoring of the sample flow to the analyser.

    Before being assembled and calibrated, all metal components in contact with the medium such as cone, float, valve components, etc., receive a SilcoNert 2000 inert silicon coating, a patented surface treatment at a temperature of 400°C / 752°F. The same is possible for wetted metal components of DK 46, DK 47, DK 48 and DK 800 glass devices.

    Biopharma alliance announced.

    Zenith Technologies and GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences business have announced a collaboration to support biopharmaceutical manufacturing deployment.

    As part of the partnership, Zenith Technologies’ methodologies, systems and libraries will be offered as a service to GE Healthcare’s clients in bioprocessing. The combined offering is aimed at helping biopharmaceutical manufacturers increase productivity, improve efficiency and reduce costs.

    The two companies will integrate process control systems, manufacturing execution system (MES) solutions and other supporting technologies with GE Healthcare’s start-to-finish technologies and solutions for the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

    Gasmet Technologies has acquired Quantitech Limited. Gasmet’s products are employed globally in regulatory monitoring, process control and environmental/safety applications, and Quantitech has been its sales and service partner in Britain and Ireland since 1995.
