Intelligent drive with integrated motion controller. #Technosoft #PAuto

TECHNOSOFT has released iPOS4808 MY-CAT-STO, an intelligent drive with integrated motion controller offering 1 kW of peak power in a compact and flexible design.

Conceived as a plug-in solution for multi-axis systems requiring accurate position control and an EtherCAT interface, the iPOS4808 MY-CAT-STO intelligent drive offers Safe Torque Off functionality via a dedicated HW implementation.

This allows users to reduce the system’s cost, while increasing the safety level of their application.

Due to its innovative motor control architecture, the iPOS4808 represents a universal drive solution for any motor that fits its power ratings – 48 V; 8 A/20 A. Either brushed DC, brushless DC, stepper or linear motors can be controlled by the drive that supports as well a variety of feedback types ranging from incremental TTL or sin/cos encoders to absolute SSI or BiSS position sensors. One drive for any motor technology brings a big advantage in terms of reducing the stock items as well as the implementation time, due to a unique user interface for all axes.

Another advantage is represented by the plug-in capability of the product that offers a large flexibility in terms of integration into the user’s motherboard — where the size, shape and connectors can be customized to respond exactly to the application requirements.

The iPOS4808 MY-CAT-STO is designed for high-end applications (e.g., dual-loop control), where its advanced control architecture, integrating up to 9 digital filters, makes the difference in terms of motion control performance.

Condensate monitor.

Mountable on pipes and flat surfaces

The condensation monitor is an electronic Hygrostat, from B+B Sensors,  which is designed to sense dew formation or beginning of water condensation on cooled objects. As soon as the measured value of surface humidity exceeds a certain limit (approx. 94 % RH), it opens the relay contact and trips the static switch contact (safety function). For example, this signal can be used for switching on a heater.

With the new measurement philosophy and application of a special sensor with logarithmic characteristics, it is now possible to regulate very close to the dew start point. With the help of this technology, now the maximum cooling performance of the ceilings can be achieved, without the risk of condensate formation.

During product development, reliable mode of operation was the most important criterion. The circuit is protected against overvoltage, reverse polarity and faulty connections. In addition to the humidity sensing element, which reacts to the critical air humidity values below the condensation limit, there is a safety circuit which detects the dew occurence and independently trips the static power circuit. With the optimised AC-circuit technology, the sensor experiences even a short time contact with water without getting destroyed due to electrolysis effect.

A sinter filter over the sensor element protects it from accumulated dust and ensures many years of operation without cleaning or maintenance.

The condensation monitor is available in two different variants:

The model with attached tubular sensor can be directly mounted on the inlet of the cooling panels with minimum fitment expenses. The sensor with aluminium profile is fitted on the tube and fixed with the enclosed assembly strap. The wiring expenses are also very less. The device isprovided with a mains Iead and plug, which is only to be connected.

Peristaltic metering pump enhanced and redesigned.

The FLEXFLO® Peristaltic Metering Pump from Blue-White, has a re-designed that greatly increases both performance and strength.

The re-design of the head and tube assemblies helps provide more precise chemical feed. Model numbers are visibly stamped on the PVDF pump tube adapters, for easy re–order.

The peristaltic metering injectors are suited to chemical feed demand up to a maximum feed output of 124GPD/8.45LPH; and working pressures reaching 100PSI/6.9Bar.

Model A-100N is compatible with a wide range of water treatment chemicals. With no valves to clog, these pumps are well-suited for use with many gas forming chemicals.

FLEXFLO® Pumps feature Blue-White’s exclusive built-in Tube Failure Detection system, (Patent No. 7,001,153 and 7,284,964). If non-compatible chemical is detected in the head, the pump will automatically shut off, and will not restart until that chemical has been removed.

FLEXFLO® is designed to be compatible with Blue-White’s Micro-Flo flow verification sensor with select digital models accepting 4-20mA, 0-10Vdc inputs for eternal speed control.

Scanning accessory for spot pyrometers.

Fluke® Process Instruments has introduced the SpotScan™ line scanning accessory for its family of best-in-class spot pyrometers. Compatible with the Endurance™, Marathon, and Modline® 5 and Modline 7 Series of infrared (IR) noncontact temperature measurement sensors, the accessory features an innovative scanning mechanism that enables users to gather temperature data over a larger area on the target.

The SpotScan line scanning accessory helps optimize the performance of IR thermometers in applications ranging from metals processing and induction heating, to carbon graphite production. It is especially well-suited for web and conveyor hot spot or cold spot monitoring.

With the SpotScan accessory, industrial facilities can continue to utilize the advanced optics of their Fluke Process Instruments IR temperature sensors to achieve small spot sizes on the measurement target, but also “spot sweep” over the target to see a larger area—thus obtaining additional information on critical production processes. Users can see a hot spot over a larger area and continuously monitor the analog output for temperature variations that exceed defined limits.

The SpotScan accessory allows plant operators to employ signal conditioning sensor capabilities to obtain temperature information in a variety of different ways. For example, use of the “peak picker” function helps identify hot spots over a larger area. The averaging/response time functions provide average temperature over an extended range. In either case, operators benefit from an expanded view and increased awareness of process conditions.

The SpotScan accessory is available with options for sighting the IR instrument and periodically checking sighting accuracy. Onboard controls make it easy to manipulate the end or center positions of the scan, as well as its frequency. For a sensor equipped with a laser, the user can simply turn the unit on to see exactly where the sensor is aimed. For units equipped with through-the-lens sighting, scanning at the end points can be stopped to make necessary aiming adjustments.

The SpotScan line scanning accessory utilizes the existing sensor DC power supply. Its durable IP65 enclosure is designed to withstand ambient temperatures up to 60°C (140ºF), and an air purge option is available for use in dusty or dirty environments.

Miniature proportional valve.

The small and highly accurate proportional valve offers users an easy-to-integrate solution on a broad range of pressure and flow control applications.

Emerson is introducing its Preciflow 12.7mm miniature proportional valve by ASCO Numatics. The new proportional valve features one of the smallest footprints on the market combined with highly accurate flow control – making it ideal for a broad range of applications, particularly those in the analytical and medical industries.

“Complete with RoHS compliance and a pressure range of -0.9 (vacuum) to 10 bar, our compact Preciflow 12.7mm valve provides medical equipment manufacturers with a versatile product suitable for a range of applications.” said Alain Crampon, Analytical and Medical Business Development Manager for ASCO Numatics. “In addition, thanks to its small size and light weight, the valve is easy to integrate into existing systems, and operation can be customised according to customer requirements.”

The new proportional valve integrates key features that result in reduced wear and tear, considerably increasing its life-span and ensuring its accuracy over time. This includes two internal flat springs that allow the core to float freely, minimising friction during operation.

With typical hysteresis rated at 5%, Preciflow 12.7mm provides accurate and repeatable control. Its suitability for oxygen service use makes it an ideal solution for gas chromatography and mass spectrometry applications, and its low power consumption offers added value to end users.

Humidity & air velocity calibration at the highest level.

E+E Elektronik maintains the national standards for humidity and air velocity in Austria as a designated laboratory of the Federal Office for Metrology, BEV (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen). Recently, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) authorised E+E Elektronik to use the CIPM MRA logo (International Committee for Weights and Measures - Mutual Recognition Arrangement) on its BEV/E+E calibration certificates.

Only National Metrological Institutes (NMI) and their designated laboratories, which are the highest metrological authorities of a country, are permitted to use the CIPM MRA logo. The prerequisite for this is that their Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) data is listed in the BIPM Key Comparison Database (KCDB). A certificate issued by a laboratory under the CIPM MRA is accepted by assessors from Conformity Assessment Bodies with the highest level of confidence.

As designated laboratory of the BEV, E+E Elektronik is an implicit cosignatory of the MRA. The E+E calibration laboratory undergoes regular audits by international experts, participates in international measurement comparisons and established a quality management system certified according to ISO 17025.

E+E Elektronik offers calibration services for humidity, dewpoint, air velocity, gas mass flow, temperature, CO2 and pressure. Calibrations are carried out either in the designated laboratory (NMI) or the accredited OEKD calibration laboratory. Additionally, the E+E service department performs in-house or on-site ISO calibrations according to the E+E standard.

Bub-1GHz wireless leader has new MD.

Low Power Radio Solutions (LPRS) has announced the appointment of Nick Pummell as Managing Director.

Pummell joins from Alpha Micro Components, a successful independent franchised distributor of components for Telematics and Machine-to-Machine (M2M). He brings over 12 years’ experience in strategic business development and partner acquisition, and will play a key role as LPRS strengthens its focus on expanding its product portfolio.

As MD, Pummell will take charge of the overall business and commercial offerings, and as well as expanding the product portfolio, will also drive market penetration.

Nick has many years' experience of introducing wireless network integration to OEMs, design houses and engineers, and has particular interests in Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications.

He comments, “I am really excited to join the LPRS team and continue to build on its success to date”.

Former MD Barry Gillibrand will be stepping aside as Pummell takes over all operations. Gillibrand comments, “This is an exciting time for LPRS. Lonnie Anthony has been appointed as Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the U.S. business of Ion Science.

Prior to Ion Science Inc, he was Regional Sales Manager at TSI Inc, specialists in scientific precision measurement instrumentation. Earlier roles include International Territory Manager at Moldex-Metric and Safety Sales Specialist at Airgas.

Fluke has introduced a high-end, higher resolution model to its latest TiS Performance Series of infrared cameras. The new TiS75 offers manual focusing, capturing professional quality images on its 320 x 240 pixel, 3.5 inch screen.

Absolute pressure sensor with temperature probe.

The new M6 miniature absolute pressure sensor from Kistler Instruments incorporates a PT1000 temperature probe and integrated signal conditioning in a compact package weighing less than 12g.

Available in three pressure ranges; 5, 10 and 20 bar with temperature compensation up to 150°C and an exceptionally short body length of 24.4mm, the new sensor is ideal for challenging applications in very confined spaces. Commissioning made easy!

Emerson Process Management has introduced Smart Commissioning, a technology-enabled process that drastically reduces automation commissioning time and effort. USB Type-C receptacles.

Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the USB Type-C receptacle from TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity. This new mid-mount connector provides data, power, and audio/video connectivity and transmission in a single solution. The receptacle is fully compliant with USB Type-C specifications and is designed to be small enough for handheld devices yet robust enough for industrial applications.

TE’s USB Type-C receptacle, available from Mouser Electronics, features a reversible mating interface designed to accept a plug in any direction, enabling easy, reliable mating. The connector supports a variety of protocols and, with the use of adapters, is backwards-compatible to HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort and other types of connections from the single USB Type-C port. The connector supports scalable power charging, delivering up to 100W at 20V, and meets USB 3.1 protocols, giving it high throughput speeds up to 10Gbps plus backward-compatibility with USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 2.0.

TE’s new USB Type-C connector features enhanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding on the receptacle shell to help eliminate unwanted EMI leakage and provide enhanced performance over similar legacy products. It also offers additional connector board retention features compared to the industry standard footprint to provide enhanced reliability and ruggedness. The receptacle is suitable for a variety of applications, including factory automation, power chargers, medical devices, automotive infotainment systems, smartphones and tablets and wearable devices.

Ex LED tubular lights.

The new generation of R. Stahl's LED-based tubular light fittings for use in hazardous areas (Ex zones 1, 2, 21 and 22) combine excellent energy efficiency with great usability and easy handling. These very compact tubular, machine and inspection lights (6036, 6039 and 6149/2 series, respectively) are low-maintenance products with a very long service life even in extremely harsh environments, including marine applications. Fully living up to their "Ex 4.0" concept, they feature a variety of regional and sectoral certifications that facilitate almost universal use throughout the world. The luminaires provide IP68 ingress protection, are shock-proof and vibration-proof and withstand even extreme ambient temperatures that range from -55 °C to +70 °C, with exact specifications depending on the model.

Due to their slim, lightweight design, 6036 and 6039 series lights for general lighting purposes or for use as machine lights can be easily installed even in hard-to-access locations. Compared to conventional linear luminaires, superior illuminance is ensured by these very efficient high-performance LEDs: 30 four-foot 6036 series LED-based tubular light fittings provide approximately 500 lx, enough to replace 35 linear luminaires fitted with two 36 W fluorescent tubes each, or 48 conventional box-type units retrofitted with LEDs. The total power consumption of the LED tubular lights is only about half as high, and the specific power per 100 lx is only 1.5 W/m². 6039 series machine lights weigh less than 1.5 kg and provide a very uniformly illuminated working area due to a wide beam angle of ±60°. They consume less than 15 W of power and achieve a luminous flux of 1,000 lm. The flicker-free LED light provides enhanced safety especially near rotating equipment. Glare is reduced by a diffuser.

Type 6149/2 inspection lights complete Stahl's user-friendly portfolio of compact lamps. These robust, very lightweight portable lamps also feature excellent lighting characteristics with a luminous flux of 600 lm and a wide, low-glare beam angle. They are available with different rated voltages and an optional wire guard. The lightweight products' real-life durability in rough environments is also captured on video by the "R. Ashtead Technology’s facility in Hertfordshire (GB) is now an approved Service Centre for the iPEK range of high-quality pipeline inspection systems, providing repair and maintenance for a number of iPEK Systems, including the Rovver®, Rovion® and Agilios™ crawler and push-rod cameras.

7inch TFT display module.

KOE has announced the introduction of a new compact 7.0-inch TFT display module. The TX18D204VM0BAA features Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), IPS (In-plane Switching), LVDS data interface, LED backlight and an extended operating temperature range.

The slim 7.0-inch display module has a thickness of just 4.0mm and mechanical outline dimensions of 169.0mm (w) x 103.0mm (h). A pixel density of 314ppi (pixels per inch) is achieved with a pixel pitch of 0.081mm (w) x 0.081mm in an active display area of 155.52mm (w) x 87.48mm.

Implementing the latest IPS (In-plane-Switching) technology the Full HD display features exceptional colour image consistency over 170° vertical and horizontal viewing angles. A contrast ratio of 800:1 and a brightness specification of 600cd/m² ensure excellent optical performance and bright, concise display images. The white LED backlight is specified at 40K hours to half brightness lifetime.

Electromechanical relays are ideal for limited space installations.

IDEC Corporation has added the 14mm-wide RV8H compact relay family to its existing interface relay line. These electromechanical relays are ideal for panels with limited room as they provide up to a 40% reduction in required DIN rail track space as compared to standard ice-cube relays, and feature the industry’s lowest height requirement as they are only 70mm high.

RV8H relays work particularly well in higher load switching applications, industrial automation panels with high I/O content, and commercial HVAC panels. In these and other applications, an RV8H relay is typically installed between an output from a PLC or other controller and the load to increase switching capacity and protect the output from damage. These relays are rapidly replacing traditional 5 to 10A general purpose plug-in relays due to their smaller size and lower cost

The 14mm-wide RV8H compact relay family includes SPDT and DPDT models, and the DPDT models are supplied with gold-plated contacts. SPDT models are rated up to 16A and DPDT models are rated up to 8A. All versions are available with AC or DC input, with input voltages from 5 VDC to 240 VAC.

The relays are available pre-assembled in a DIN-mount socket, and this universal AC/DC socket includes built-in surge suppression and a green LED Indicator. The entire socket and relay assembly is UL listed, and a release lever is included for easy locking and removal of the relay.

The 14mm-wide RV8H compact relay family features high dielectric strength and impulse withstand voltage, and all DC input relays are protected from reverse polarity. Either screw type or spring clamp terminations can be specified. The operating temperature range is -40ºC to 70°C, and all versions are RoHS compliant.

Sound measurement pioneer celebrates!

Gunnar Rasmussen founder of G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration, celebrates his 90th birthday on 23 November 2015.

As an engineering student Gunnar Rasmussen already showed great promise, and shortly after his graduation he was hired by the Danish audio pioneers Brüel & Kjær. In the 1950s the company sent Gunnar Rasmussen to the United States to promote its products and manage the after-sales service. The inquisitive microphone specialist also took the opportunity to get acquainted with America’s futuristic technologies and to forge ties with a wide range of industries.

World class accuracy and durability
The fast growing American automotive, aerospace and consumer industries in the 1950s had a continuous demand for more and better acoustic measurement microphones. Through his intense involvement in all kinds of acoustical measurement projects, Gunnar realised that the microphones available at that time needed some serious improvements. After returning to Denmark, he set out to develop a new generation of microphones using the most advanced materials and assembly techniques. The outcome was a new, revolutionary and simple design, which for the past 60 years has been preferred for all types of professional acoustic measurements and has been internationally standardized.

G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration
At the age of 67 where most people are heading for retirement, Gunnar Rasmussen left founded G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration in 1994. Starting out as a small family business, run by Gunnar Rasmussen and his wife Hanna Hertz, the new company quickly grew into a respected and leading manufacturer of measurement microphones, turning many of its founder’s so-far unexploited ideas and inventions into commercial successes. Today, the company offers more than 100 different microphones types, employs 90 people, and has offices or affiliates in approximately 40 countries worldwide.

Gunnar Rasmussen’s and Hanna Hertz’ sons, Per Rasmussen and Peter Wulf-Andersen now play key R&D roles at G.R.A.S. Sound & Vibration, while Lars Kjærgaard, who joined the company in 2011, has been serving as CEO since 2014. As Chairman, Gunnar Rasmussen continues to inspire with his extraordinary vision and guiding principles for the company.

Honors and accolades
He was appointed as chair of the ISO committee, made a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and he received the Danish Design Awards for his design of measurement microphones and sound level meters. The famous conductor Leonard Bernstein turned to Gunnar Rasmussen for help producing a better recording microphone for classical music. Gunnar Rasmussen earned a CETIM award and the IEC Award. In 2008 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievements in Acoustics award by the European Acoustics Association. However, Gunnar Rasmussen does not dwell much on accolades. On the contrary, he seems to be looking ahead to solve the next problem.

Market volatility boosts NDT instrument rental resources.

Despite challenging times in the oil and gas sector, rental equipment specialist Ashtead Technology has continued to invest in its fleet of inspection instruments; adding over £150k (€214k) worth of equipment.

“Energy is a major market for Ashtead Technology,” says NDT Market Manager Steve Drake. “Lower oil and gas prices have forced companies in this sector to reduce capital budgets, but a high volume of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) work is necessary to maintain high value assets. A depressed energy market therefore creates an opportunity for instrument hire because renting helps to avoid capital costs whilst minimising operational costs.
“We have responded to this demand by ramping up the investments that we are making in test and inspection equipment, much of which has been purchased in response to specific requests from customers.” 

Recent examples of Ashtead Technology’s investments include the Olympus HydroFORM and RexoFORM Scanner Kits which use phased array (PA) for the detection of wall-thickness reductions due to corrosion, abrasion, and erosion. With its unique design, the RexoFORM can be used on pipes of different diameters with no need for multiple curved wedges. The Phoenix Swift scanner was purchased to meet a customer’s specific needs; a compact single axis, magnetic wheeled scanner, it can be used with both Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD) and PA probes, making it ideal for weld inspection. A range of other Phoenix scanners are also now available for hire, including the Tracer, which with two wire encoders, calculates and outputs accurate X-Y positional data for C-scan inspections without the constraints of a scanning frame. For difficult to access areas, the pocket-sized ToFD Caliper is ideal for inspecting welds of any orientation on 3” pipes up to flat plate. For those customers that require fast, continuous ultrasonic corrosion mapping, the Sp-Arc scanner measures wall thickness continuously along small bore ferritic pipes for unlimited lengths.

Conventional UT flaw detectors and probe kits are also available to support a wide variety of weld inspection and corrosion mapping work.

RVI investments include the Olympus IPLEX RT Videoprobe, which has a 7.5m long, 6mm diameter scope, making it ideal for the internal inspection of engines, aircraft components, turbines and process plant. For applications requiring a waterproof camera and/or an extended cable length, the Wohler VIS350 is ideal for wastewater pipe inspection and other difficult to access locations such as gas flues, ventilation systems and hollow areas.

Summarising, Steve Drake says: “These investments demonstrate our commitment to the Ashtead Technology NDT Centre of Excellence; offering customers a wide choice of the latest technology supported by a high level of technical support. On the rare occasions when the ideal equipment is not available from our rental fleet, we will always consider making further purchases, so that every customer is able to use the best possible technology for their specific application.”

Collaboration to drive biopharma manufacturing efficiency.

GE Healthcare’s Life Sciences business and Emerson Process Management have announced a collaboration aimed at increasing productivity and improving efficiency in the production of biopharmaceuticals such as monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. 

The two companies will collaborate to integrate Emerson’s DeltaV™ distributed control system with GE Healthcare’s enterprise offerings and start-to-finish technologies for the global biomanufacturing industry. The first DeltaV-driven GE Healthcare installation, which is expected to be complete before the end of the year, will be a FlexFactory™, GE’s integrated manufacturing platform based on single-use technologies.

Biopharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly looking to automate production processes, driven by the industry need to increase efficiency and reduce costs. GE’s start-to-finish portfolio of single-use bioprocessing technologies already allows manufacturers to reduce set-up times and increase manufacturing flexibility. Emerson’s DeltaV system, which uses predictive technologies to connect people, processes and production, enables remote monitoring and control from multiple locations across a company’s network and is already widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. The DeltaV system will be offered as an automation control platform for GE’s single-use bioprocessing offerings.

Waterproof push button and rocker switches.

CHERRY Industrial Solutions KC, KF and KD round waterproof switches meet IP65 specifications and provide a cost-effective switching solution for the many applications requiring protection from water and dust ingress. 

Typical applications include on and off-road vehicles, industrial handling and agricultural equipment, medical systems, powered garden tools, lawnmowers and garden sprayers.  Three product families are available: the KD and KC series of round rocker switches and the KF switch series for products requiring a pushbutton solution. 

The KC series switches are IP65 rated and designed to a fit panel cut-out of 20.20mm diameter. Illuminated and non-lighted versions are available with a black actuator and housing for the non-lighted version and red actuator with black housing and red lens for the illuminated version.  This series of single-pole, single-throw (SPST) function switches offers multiple termination options.  Electrical ratings include 16A @ 125VAC, 10A @ 250VAC, 20A @ 14VDC, 10A @ 28VDC and an EN61058 rated version in 10(4)A @ 250V.

KD series switches are available in two versions: DPST (double pole, single throw) and DPDT (double pole, double throw).  Featuring snap-in mounting to fit the same aperture sizes as the KC series, they can be supplied as illuminated or non-lighted versions and are rated for DC and AC loads to 16A @ 125VAC, 10A @ 250VAC, 20A @ 14VDC and 10A @28VDC, all models have quick connect 0.187in (4.76mm) terminals.

For applications requiring a round pushbutton switch rather than a rocker, the KF series is offered in five different versions, both SPST and DPST and both types of switch can be supplied lit and unlit as required. Maintained-action and momentary switching is a further option. The KF series has quick-connect 4.76mm terminals and is IP-65 compliant. Electrical ratings are: 20A @ 14VDC and 10A @ 28VDC, and in UL 1054 ratings of 10A @ 125VAC and 6A @ 250VAC, 1/2HP and 125/250VAC are also available. 

All three switch families have a rugged design for industrial and outdoor applications offer a mechanical life of 100,000 cycles and a long electrical life of between 6,000 and 25,000 cycles.

Delivering new benchmarks in dynamic performance and accuracy, Queensgate’s NPC-D-5200 is a digital controller for use with the company’s highly advanced closed loop piezo actuators and stages.

Queensgate, a Elektron Technology brand, pioneered the use of capacitive sensors to provide precise positional feedback in closed loop; the NPC-D-5200 incorporates a precision capacitive measurement circuit and is updated with the stage position 120000 times per second, delivering high positional accuracy at speed. It has the capacity to address a broad spectrum of highly demanding alignment and metrology applications. By employing proprietary low noise technology, stage position noise has been reduced so that in the majority of implementations it is just a few tens of pm.

The NPC-D-5200 controller has a compact (268mm x 194mm x 70mm) and lightweight (1.7kg) construction. It incorporates serial (RS232), USB 2.0 and Ethernet interfaces, so that connectivity options are not restricted and system flexibility is maximized. The unit has an operational temperature range that covers 10°C to 40°C.

Automation concept for paddle mixers cuts electricity costs.

The biogas plant operated by AgriGen Limited in Britain supplies around 5000 households with power and heat. Technology from Siemens used to control and automate the plant has enabled a 50 percent reduction in the plant’s electrical energy consumption.
Ingenious twist!
To implement the new plant operated by AgriGen, a consortium comprising large-scale agricultural businesses based in Suffolk (GB), Siemens joined forces with Thöni, an Austrian industrial group specializing in the generation of bioenergy. Designed to generate biogas, the plant uses a special method developed by Thöni. This involves continuously filling fluid and solid matter into a wet fermenter, which is at the heart of natural gas production technology, with the aid of a special feeding technique. The liquid substrate is fed into the fermenter by a pump and renewable resources are added by means of a solids loading device. To enable precise monitoring and simple automation of the plant, Siemens supplied the Simatic S7-300 controller, Simatic ET200S distributed I/O and visualization software WinCC V7.0. The I/O and Sinamics frequency converter are linked via Profibus. Precise height, pressure and temperature measurements are performed using the radar level transmitters Sitrans LR200, Pointek CLS300/500, Sitrans P DSIII and Sitrans T from Siemens.

The plant’s ingenious twist
The unusual feature of this plant are the specially designed paddles used to keep the material moving and well homogenized. This prevents sediment settling on the floor of the fermenter and stops any potential suspended particles forming floating layers, so creating the optimum conditions for biological decomposition of the materials. The paddle mixers are driven by a planetary gear and Sinamics G120 frequency converter. The smaller propeller mixers are also fitted with Sirius 3EW40 soft starters. The optimum automation concept in combination with the patented paddle mixer has reduced the plant’s electricity consumption by 50 percent.

Development kit offers introduction to RFID systems.

Harting have introduced a new introductory kit for engineers who are looking to implement RFID solutions.

Designed specifically to help new users understand the ease and flexibility of configuring RFID solutions, the development kit contains everything they need to get started. Potential users can configure their own applications, as well as familiarising themselves with the functionality and terminology used.
