Diaphragm valve with pneumatic actuator.

GF Piping Systems has added the new diaphragm valve type 604/605 with integrated pneumatic actuator to its product range. This long runner – available beginning of October 2015 – combines compact design with best flow performance for an economic price-performance ratio.

A spokesperson for te company stated, "Open your application in water treatment, the chemical process or other industries for the diaphragm valve type 604/605 and you will be astonished what this small valve can handle."

The valve’s compact design fits standard installation lengths. Its integrated pneumatic actuator with quick opening and closing times enables more than one million closing cycles over its long service life. That is what GF Piping Systems calls a durable hard worker. The valve is flexible in its operating modes and offers fail safe to close (FC), fail safe to open (FO) and double acting (DA) options.

The actuator housing can be opened quickly for service due to the central housing nut. The connection with the valve body is full plastic without any metal parts.Therefore all materials have the same temperature expansion coefficients which prevents leakages and avoids re-torqueing of screws. Thanks to the optimized linear flow characteristics the kv value is up to 30 percent higher than with comparable valves. The valve is available in DN15 with the pressure rating of PN6.

Heat monitoring system to portfolio added to range!

As part of its on-going growth plan and commitment to working with well-respected manufacturers and high quality products, world leader in occupational health and environmental noise and vibration monitoring instrumentation, Svantek has joined forces with LSI Lantem to become distributor in Britain for the Italian company’s newly-launched Heat Shield.

The compact system is designed to help reduce the risk of overheating whilst working in hot environments such as bakeries and foundries, where the use of ovens and furnaces mean that heat stress is a constant concern for employees.

"The last piece of puzzle" in diagnosing & correcting faults in rotating equipment!

Emerson Process Management has enhanced its portable CSI 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer with a wireless interface to popular laser shaft alignment tools. This advance reduces two burdens − equipment and time − for operators performing vibration analysis and corrective tasks in the field.

The CSI 2140 already offers four-channel plus phase data collection to save time and effort, advanced vibration analysis that embeds expertise in the tool, and multi-plane balancing to correct imbalance in industrial fans. By adding a wireless link to laser fixtures, Emerson further streamlines the work process. Using the CSI 2140, personnel can perform route-based vibration data collection; analyse the root cause; and align the machine − all in one trip. At the same time, they can identify and solve machinery faults to prevent any unplanned downtime.

Tom Nelson, CSI 2140 senior technology manager at Emerson, defined the addition of alignment as, “the last piece of the puzzle to deliver a single, superior tool for diagnosing and correcting faults in rotating equipment.”

The shaft alignment option for the CSI 2140 uses the familiar, intuitive Emerson interface to guide technicians through a three-step process that quickly achieves precision alignment. The laser fixtures employ a unique Sweep technology to measure misalignment easily, even in tight clearance applications. An advanced option monitors the corrective machine moves in vertical and horizontal directions simultaneously. All data collected with the CSI 2140 can be uploaded wirelessly to a single database using the AMS Suite: Machinery Health™ Manager software. This enables the maintenance team to collect data, analyse problems, and document results in parallel.

Current clamp meter!

Fluke has introduced a Current Clamp Meter measuring up to 2000A DC that wirelessly relays measurements to other Fluke Connect™ enabled master units at a safe distance. The Fluke a3003 FC Wireless DC Current Clamp Meter is a fully functional current clamp meter. With its extra-wide jaw, it easily clamps around large conductors in utility, rail, marine, mining, or other heavy manufacturing industries where large DC currents or large current carrying cables are typically found.

Their a3003 FC Current Clamp Meter measures DC currents from 10A to 2000A. Its extra wide jaw size of 64mm enables the measurement of large-diameter, high-current conductors. Supplied with a convenient magnetic hanging strap for safe working and recording over time, the current clamp features a logging function for the recording and saving of up to 65,000 measurements.

The Fluke Connect system allows maintenance technicians to wirelessly transmit measurement data from Fluke test tools such as the a3003 FC to their smart phone for secure storage on the cloud, thus enabling access by any team member in the field. Maintenance technicians make better, faster decisions when they have field access to maintenance records and when they can review measurements in real time with team members and supervisors who may be in different locations. Fluke Connect facilitates access to records by all team members wherever they are and at the same time increases the safety of technicians working with energised equipment.

The Fluke a3003 FC Current Clamp Meter is suitable for field maintenance engineers, industrial technicians and maintenance managers working in utilities and power generation, heavy industry (such as steel mills, electroplating and mining), and with large motor and DC control systems and UPSs.

The Fluke Connect app can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. More than twenty Fluke tools connect wirelessly with the Connect app, including digital multimeters, infrared cameras, insulation testers, process meters, and specific voltage, current and temperature meters.

Industrial Ethernet switches with PoE+.

Harting has extended its Ha-VIS eCon range of industrial Ethernet Switches by incorporating high-performance Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) for the supply of power to industrial devices such as vision camera on production lines.

The new devices offer a complete integrated solution for stable, high-bandwidth data communication and reliable power transfer in a single device, while reducing cabling effort and costs at the same time. With a data transfer rate of 1000 Mbit/s simultaneously on all ports and with the support of PoE+, the Ha-VIS eCon series enables the efficient and future-proof design of equipment, systems and plants.

Over and beyond the PoE/PoE+ standard, Harting is also offering the new switches with an integrated DC/DC voltage converter. In this case the switches can be supplied with 24 V instead of the 48/54 V usually required. This provides users with more flexibility in the connection of end devices and the expansion of the network, saves on components such as power supplies, and reduces assembly time and space.

Thanks to their compact dimensions, the Ha-VIS eCon family of switches of will fit into any user application. The eCon 2000 range of flat switches has up to 16 Fast Ethernet ports while the eCon 3000 slim design range has up to 10 Fast Ethernet ports to offer economical and industrial options to expand network infrastructures. Full Gigabit switches are available with up to 7 ports for applications with high data throughput. With over 200 switch models, users can select the combination of performance characteristics and port configuration that fits their particular requirements.

System-wide automation development software.

The speed and efficiency of industrial control and machinery automation projects is enhanced significantly with a major new release of ABB's integrated development toolsuite.

Automation Builder 1.1 provides an integrated development environment for solutions using the spectrum of automation components - including PLCs and safety PLCs, motion controllers, drives, robots and HMIs - substantially reducing software complexity and cutting time to market and cost of ownership.

"Software complexity is the number one project issue today for most automation OEMs and system integrators. Automation Builder gives automation developers and owners the means to simplify control engineering and standardize on a single development platform for all projects - regardless of scale," says Armin Wallnhoefer of ABB.

Among many new features, the latest release of ABB's software extends the data exchange capabilities with electrical planning and engineering software, with a new bi-directional interface to the widely-used EPLAN Electric P8. Electrical automation and PLC design data may be imported, modified and transferred back to the electrical CAD environment - eliminating any need to manually enter data and thereby ensuring synchronization of signal identification between the two software environments.

The release now includes a comparison function that allows engineers to see what might have changed since they last looked at a project, and the ability to use profiles of previous development tool versions for compatibility.

Support for new hardware includes the ability to program the latest member of the well-known AC500 PLC family - the PM595 CPU - programming ACS880 IEC61131-3 programmable drives and the DCT 880 thyristor power controller, and developing motion control systems with ABB's new MotiFlex e180 servo drives or the ACS580 general-purpose drive.

Another important new element of the software is the introduction of an easy-to-use download and licensing system. ABB offers three licensing options: a basic version suitable for first time PLC users and engineers working on smaller-scale automation, motion and drive projects - this is available at no cost; a standard version which supports integrated engineering of advanced and complex systems including the use of safety PLCs; and a premium version.

The premium version incorporates C/C+ programming tools, E-CAD interfaces and other high level features for optimal productivity and easy collaboration, and simpler management of engineering data on large-scale projects involving thousands of I/O points.

With Automation Builder 1.1, users may also automatically update the suite of software tools to the latest versions using a 'one click' mechanism, and a single license covers all of the software packages included.

ABB has also introduced many usability improvements to further enhance the user’s productivity. These include simplified drop-down menus, drag-and-drop features on the object tree, an improved device repository with search and filter functions, a powerful list editor for AC500 I/O mapping, and a re-worked help system - to name a few.

Software development is the most expensive element of the vast majority of automation projects. By providing a unified development environment for the complete scope of automation projects, ABB is helping application experts, software and hardware engineers to focus their time and effort purely on developing the application, and not waste time on the myriad of interfacing issues that can arise when building solutions using many different types of automation devices. ABB estimates that the Automation Builder environment can reduce development engineering effort by around 30% for medium complexity projects, and deliver even higher savings on large-scale projects! This is particularly the case for projects involving many different types of automation components.

Automation Builder provides powerful PLC development resources in the form of the standards-compliant IEC 61131-3 development environment, and ABB's Panel Builder tool for creating HMIs. The software suite also includes tools for configuring and programming the latest generation of ABB’s safety PLCs - the AC500-S family - the RobotStudio tool for simulating and programming ABB robot applications, and the Mint WorkBench tool with its pre-built and tested libraries for programming ABB’s servo drives.

Weighing terminals!

Siemens is upgrading its weighing technology portfolio to include two complete packages for standalone applications: The new weighing terminals Siwarex WT231 for non-automatic scales and Siwarex WT241 for belt scales combine weighing electronics and touch panel in a single unit. The two new weighing terminals can be set up as a standalone solution with the utmost speed and simplicity, and using an RS485 Modbus RTU interface they also allow integration into any commonly used control environment.

OTT Hydrometry has appointed NVM Ltd as exclusive distributor for Ireland. Based in Drogheda, NVM will be responsible for sales and service in Ireland with immediate effect.

Motor protection relays!

WEG has launched a new series of highly versatile and efficient electronic motor protection relays to help engineers cut stock management costs and simplify design processes whilst ensuring high reliability according to international standards. The RW_E relays offer a wider adjustment range to suit a broad spectrum of motor powers and deliver 87% less power dissipation than conventional thermal devices, therefore providing enhanced energy efficiency, while ensuring the motor’s smooth running and enabling users to reduce maintenance costs and total cost of ownership.

The RW_E relays’ wide current adjustment range of 1:5 ratio between the lowest and highest settings allows the relays to cover an extensive variety of motor powers at rated operating voltages up to 690 VAC. This enables original equipment manufacturers to reduce their stock of spare parts and associated warehousing costs and invest less time in designing machinery to accommodate different relay models.

The relays are just as easy to use as bimetallic motor protection relays, and feature manual or automatic reset after tripping. Trip classes 10, 20 and 30 for normal and heavy-load starting can be set easily on the front panel. The relays also include temperature compensation, which ensures consistently high trip accuracy from -20°C to +60°C without any restrictions.

The relays provide the highest levels of reliability worldwide and are manufactured and tested to the IEC/EN 60947 international standard (DIN VDE 0660) and UL 60947-4-1A (UL508) certification for the North American market. The RW_E electronic motor protection relays can be combined directly with WEG's CWM and CWB contactors to configure compact and reliable motor starter sets.

Flowmeter has no metals in the fluid path.

The F-462N Series flowmeters from Blue-White, feature metal-free wetted parts, making them ideal for use in many ultrapure applications, where contact with metal could contaminate the fluid.

Constructed of molded Polysulfone, F-462N meters offer better resistance to high temperatures and pressures, as well as many harsh chemicals, than most plastic flowmeters.

Maximum fluid temperature is 200 degrees at 0 psi. Maximum working pressure is 150 psi/ 10.3 bar at 70 degrees F/ 21c. An optional splash shield is available.

The high capacity F-462N utilizes precisely engineered ridges molded into the meter body, which guide PTFE floats. Calibration range is 2.0 to 80 GPM/8.0 to 300 LPM.

Additional features include: Polysulfone 2” F/NPT fittings with FKM O-Rings and half union adapter connections, socket fusion fittings are also available. Permanent direct reading scales are easy to read.

"New benchmark for standard valves!"

Festo has launched a new entry-level standard valve range, the VUVS series.  The new valves are robust and durable, providing a long service life, and are extremely easy to mount, enabling machine builders and engineers to enhance the design of their systems.

The VUVS valves have very high flow rates for their size, of up to 2,000 l/min with an operating pressure up to 10 bar, ingress protection to IP67and are available in optional ATEX variants. The valve range starts at 1/8” ports in a 20mm body and are simple to fit on any machine. They are ideal for vacuum and low pressure applications such as simple clamping and locking operations in semiautomatic assembly, as well as larger production lines across all industries.

Valve deliveries improved!

Effective immediately, Badger Meter has established a new lead time of two weeks for Research Control® Valves (RCV) within their broad standard offering – a reduction of more than 50 percent.

For many years, lead times for RCV valve products ranged from four to six weeks. Over the past year, Badger Meter has made major customer-focused investments in its Tulsa, Oklahoma facility where RCV valves are manufactured. Through these investments, Badger Meter has optimized its inventory, enhanced its machining capability, improved its system infrastructure, and increased its staff to ensure our new two-week standard lead time.

"Our goal in reducing the standard offering to two weeks is to leverage our proven valve solution with an incredible delivery time," said Brian Kettner, marketing manager. He added, "Badger Meter's dedication to the RCV product line will help our customers get what they need, when they need it."

Valve products outside of the standard offering are available with lead times ranging from two weeks or more. Non-standard products are also eligible for "Hot Shot" expedited shipment for customers who need custom valve products within a shorter lead time.

The new version of Softing's dataFEED OPC Suite supports the direct import of symbols from Siemens TIA Portal projects.

The new dataFEED Exporter tool, which is now part of Softing's dataFEED OPC Suite (V 4.03) allows importing symbols from Siemens TIA Portal projects (version 13 or 13 SP1) for a direct OPC Namespace configuration. The OPC Client applications receive the information for symbolic addressing from the dataFEED OPC Suite’s integrated OPC- or OPC UA Server and can use the symbolic names to access the data items of the respective data blocks. Reliable moisture readings at sub ppm levels.


Michell Instruments has launched its latest quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) moisture analyzer for demanding process applications, where reliable and accurate readings of low moisture levels are critical.

QCM is a well-established technology, often specified for gas and petrochemical processing applications. Michell’s QMA601 process moisture analyzer uses the latest generation of this technology, which gives it a lower detection limit of 0.1ppmV and an upper range of 2000ppmV.

The QMA601 also features a built-in auto calibration function – traceable to NPL and NIST – where an integral moisture generator provides a reference which is used to verify the measurements to ensure user confidence. In addition to this, precise temperature control of the moisture generator, sensor and flow control devices keeps the analyzer stable independent of changes to the ambient conditions.

The analyzer is easy to install, use and maintain. It features a full-colour touch-screen interface which allows interrogation and operation in situ, with no need for a hot-works permit. All data logging and readings are easily visible, and the main display also incorporates real-time trend graphing and alarm indicators.

Field service is also uncomplicated: the desiccant dryer is easy to remove and replace on the sampling panel. The moisture generator has an average life span of 3 years before replacement is required and the analyzer will therefore perform reliably for many years with just basic maintenance and housekeeping. A full range of service spares are also available.

The analyzer is fully certified for use in hazardous areas around the world, with accreditations from ATEX, IECEx and cCSAus.

Containing wireless in process applications!

An increased customer demand for equipment housings to contain wireless process monitoring equipment in outdoor environments has been remarked on by Intertec. The company attributes this partly to increased use of industrial wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, but mainly to the growing industry awareness that the glass-reinforced polymer (GRP) composite material it uses for all its protective enclosures is electromagnetically transparent.

Until recently, process industry take-up of WSN technology has been relatively slow, possibly because competing wireless standards have made systems designers wary of making the wrong choice. However for mainstream industrial process applications, the field has now narrowed to just two standards – WirelessHART and ISA100.11a. Both standards define secure, self-healing wireless mesh technology operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, using IEEE 802.15.4 standard radios. ISA100.11a systems use Internet protocols and are designed for multiple wireless communications purposes, while the simpler WirelessHART systems are primarily intended only for use with process instruments; they are also backward compatible with wired HART devices, which are used extensively within the process sector for remote data acquisition.

Intertec has long been aware that one of the many benefits of its GRP composite material is electromagnetic transparency – it produces a wide range of frangible environmental protection cabinets and shelters for radar and instrument landing systems at airports which are designed not to reflect or interfere with radio signals. The housings are also used extensively for cellular and satellite communications applications, as well as satellite navigation systems; the GRP material causes no measurable loss of received or transmitted RF signals, so the equipment antennas can be contained within the enclosure. However until now, Intertec has not actively promoted the fact that the non-metallic construction of its products is also ideally suited to field-based 2.4 GHz wireless sensor networks, especially for applications where external antennas are inadvisable because of their susceptibility to accidental damage.

According to Intertec’s CEO, Martin Hess, “More and more process industries are starting to deploy wireless field instrumentation, although at this stage it’s only for monitoring and diagnostics – I think that it will still be a long time before wireless is used for process control purposes. Having said that, the technology offers huge benefits for companies with large remote data acquisition needs, completely eliminating the cost and inconvenience of cables. We believe that our GRP composite enclosures provide plant engineers with a future-proof path for WSN technology – even if they choose to install cabled instruments today, by selecting the right type of enclosure at the outset they will make it easy to deploy wireless instrumentation whenever they wish, without having to change the entire installation.”

A number of Intertec’s customers, as well as manufacturers of wireless process monitoring automation, have started to evaluate the electromagnetic performance of its GRP-based enclosures for housing field-based WSN equipment. Initial results are very promising: third-party tests involving a WirelessHART gateway and a WirelessHART field device, both with built-in antennas and sited in different rooms, found that when the field device was placed inside a standard Intertec instrumentation enclosure it continued to function properly, with no measurable loss of signal.

The tests were conducted using a model from Intertec’s Multibox range, but the same results are likely to be obtained from many of the company’s enclosures that use a similar form of construction, including its popular Diabox range. Both types of enclosure are moulded from hot-pressed GRP. They are optionally available in ATEX-compliant antistatic versions for use in hazardous environments and can also be fitted with an internal layer of polyurethane foam for additional thermal insulation – all of the materials are electromagnetically transparent and have no effect on signal reception or transmission.

Many of the leading wireless process monitoring instruments on the market, including a number of pressure, flow and level transmitters, offer the option of local (on-instrument) or remote antennas. However, if the instrument needs to be housed in some form of enclosure to protect it against a harsh environment, this choice will not be available if – as is commonly the case – the enclosure is made from a metal such as steel or aluminium; its RF shielding effect will necessitate use of a remote externally mounted antenna to secure adequate signal strength. Aside from incurring additional implementation costs, use of an external antenna also involves drilling an extra hole in the enclosure – probably in its top, which is potentially the worst place for leaks – and leaves a delicate structure open to physical impact.

Intertec manufactures all its protective enclosures for field instrumentation from proprietary GRP, either in the form of a single layer or a multi-layer composite containing one or more cores of special insulating and/or fire resistant materials. As well as being electromagnetically transparent and an excellent electrical insulator, the material has multiple advantages for plant designers seeking to protect field instrumentation against environmental effects, especially for long lifecycle applications and where harsh media or severe local climatic conditions might be encountered. GRP is inherently inert and immune to damage from most common chemicals and petrochemicals. It has a similar strength to steel, but weighs about four times less, and will not corrode in the presence of salt – which is why it is increasingly becoming the enclosure material of choice for offshore and coastal oil and gas applications. GRP also has low flammability and is self-extinguishing, as well as having a very low thermal conductivity that makes it easier to implement efficient, condensation-free enclosures.

Line voltage regulator!

Economic and environmentally friendly solution for voltage control contributes to the evolution of smarter and greener grids

ABB has launched its line voltage regulator (LVR) product family for distribution networks that will boost reliability as grids receive more electricity from renewable energy installations.
Low Voltage model

Increasing amounts of energy from renewable resources, especially wind and solar, lead to more dynamic and intermittent power entering the mix. This can result in instability and frequent variation of voltage levels in the distribution network, which can pose a risk to electrical equipment if beyond the maximum allowable level set by regulators. The line voltage regulator is designed to help manage these variations and adjust the voltage accordingly.

ABB offers line voltage regulators for medium-voltage (MV) and for low-voltage (LV) grids. The MV regulator is available for ratings up to 8 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) and the LV regulator for ratings up to 250 Kilo Volt Ampere (kVA), and both allow the voltage to be adjusted by up to +/-10%. Both products are designed for quick installation and have low energy losses.

“This latest line voltage regulator can automatically adjust the voltage based on the actual load or generation mix in the distribution system, addressing a key stability challenge posed by the increasing amount of renewables entering the power network,” said Bernhard Jucker, President of ABB’s Power Products division. "It can make an important contri-bution in the evolution of smarter and greener grids. This development is in line with our Next Level Strategy, and addresses the dynamics of the evolving power grid.”

ABB developed the LVR in conjunction with Germany’s “Networks of the future/Smart Country” initiative. It has worked with the German utility RWE AG to test it on distribution grids in Germany, as well as separately in Switzerland where since 2014 it has been successfully smoothing out the typical voltage fluctuations generated by a solar power station in a rural area.
