The new release will also include support for Android-based mobile tablets, as well as continued support for Apple iPads and iPhones.

Wheel guided, belt-driven units.

Thomson Industries has released a new video to introduce the benefits of the WH SPEEDline wheel guided, belt-driven units. The units are ideal for high speed (10m/s max.)  and long stroke (11m max.) applications which may also require multiple orientation or multiple axis configurations. The SPEEDLine WH40 positioning slide is a miniaturized linear drive unit designed for extremely small and compact dimensional applications.  Built with a low coefficient of friction, these slides make it easy to fit smaller motors.

Kyle Thompson, Product Line Manager at Thomson in North America who is featured in the video, explains how WH linear units can perform at higher speeds because they do not use the re-circulating bearing elements found in round or profile rail bearings. H-type wheel guides used in combination with 60 Case® shafting enable higher speeds and provide the stiffness required to handle moment loads.

Kyle uses the WH80 unit to demonstrate the speed of operation but the range is also available in 50mm and 120mm profile widths to suit application requirements. The WH series is ideal for high throughput applications such as packaging, filling and dispensing, material handling and factory automation.

Entry-level version of volatile organic compound (VOC) monitor.

Ion Science has launched its TigerLT handheld volatile organic compound (VOC) monitor. This entry-level photoionisation detector (PID), which offers worldwide Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, is a streamlined, low cost version of the company’s well proven Tiger model.

Ideal for conducting environmental surveys, the handheld TigerLT incorporates Ion Science’s market-leading PID technology with advanced patented fence electrode system. This three-electrode format ensures increased resistance to humidity and contamination for ultimate reliability and accuracy in the field, as well as considerably reducing drift issues and extending run time.

With a detection range of 0.1 - 5,000 parts per million (ppm) utilising a standard two-point calibration protocol, Ion Science’s robust TigerLT also offers an unrivalled industry response time of just two seconds and equally quick clear down.

Both simple to operate and service, the new TigerLT has been specifically developed by Ion Science to allow the operator easy access to the lamp and sensor in minutes, and for the safe replacement of batteries in hazardous environments. The intrinsically safe instrument also meets ATEX, IECEx, UL and CSA standards.

Industry First Simultaneous Forward and Reverse Sweeping VNAs to Variety of Measurement Applications

The ShockLine™ family of affordable vector network analyzers (VNAs) from Anritsu, has been expanded with the introduction of the Performance ShockLine MS46500B series. Delivering an unprecedented level of value and performance, including best-in-class dynamic range and maximum output power, the new MS46500B series lowers cost-of-test and speeds time to market in numerous testing applications up to 8.5 GHz, including designing and manufacturing mobile network equipment, mobile devices, automotive cables, high-speed data interconnects and system integration components.

The MS46500B series is comprised of the 2-port MS46522B and 4-port MS46524B models, and expands the ShockLine family to a broader spectrum of RF test applications. Each instrument features an independent source per VNA port, and all the sources can sweep at the same time for measurement of forward and reverse s-parameters simultaneously. This unique Simultaneous Sweep feature allows 2-port measurements to be conducted twice as fast and 4-port measurements 4x as fast. With shorter test times, the MS46500B series significantly improves throughput in manufacturing environments.

With its industry best dynamic range, low trace noise, and fast sweep speed, the MS46500B series addresses the S-parameter and time-domain measurement requirements of a complete range of passive device applications. Faster frequency and time domain measurements can be achieved with a time domain with time gating option. In this configuration, the 4-port MS46524B VNA can conduct single-ended, mixed-mode, and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) measurements on multiport and differential devices.

The MS46500B series is housed in a 3U high chassis to fit in conventional rack systems and the VNAs short depth allows more bench space for cabling and the DUT. The MS46500B VNAs use industry standard LAN communications for robust remote control in production test environments.

ShockLine software also provides a powerful graphical user interface (GUI) for manual test and engineering use. When attached to a user-supplied touchscreen monitor, the full-featured GUI provides comprehensive capabilities, including network extraction, embedding/de-embedding networks, and time domain with time gating. Developing and troubleshooting test programs are made easier, due to advanced marker and limit lines features.

In addition to the MS46500B series, the ShockLine family consists of the MS46121A 1-port USB VNAs, MS46122A 2-port USB VNAs, and MS46322A Economy ShockLine VNAs. ShockLine VNAs eliminate the need to buy expensive instruments for simple S-parameter measurements, and employ multiple architectures that reduce manufacturing costs, enhance calibration stability and minimize measurement uncertainty.

New LWIR thermal imaging camera for harsh industrial environments.

Operating over a wavelength range of 8 to 14 µm the new Serval camera from Stemmer, produces high resolution images at 640 x 480 pixels and 50 Hz high frame rate. The Gigabit Ethernet interface is fully compatible with the GigE Vision standard for high data transfer rates over distances up to 100 metres. With 75 mK NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference), high sensitivity for small signals is guaranteed.

The compact Serval camera measures just 55 x 55 x 130 cm (depending on lens) and is characterised by its rugged design. The IP-67 design includes a front window protection to allow operation for case temperatures between 0˚C to 60˚C. The front window protection is provided complete with air purge to avoid the need for expensive cleaning or replacement of the lens. This means maximum operation time even in dust-loaded atmospheres. The design eliminates the need for a large third party enclosure and an extensive thermal calibration. This leads to a cost-effective compact vision system and an early time to market. The camera also offers a variety of configurations with a specific athermalised fixed lens and optional IP67 cabling, sun shroud and I/O interface board.


Thermal imaging (LWIR) cameras are widely used in the automotive, food or electronic industries. The new Serval camera is designed for long-term stable and reliable operation under difficult ambient conditions. It therefore provides system integrators in this highly specialised field with a new solution in terms of easy and maintenance-free installations as well as excellent performance.

New handling system.

A new large scale handling system, the EXCH handler, which provides advanced dynamic positioning and motion control in pick and place, cutting and assembly applications has been launched by Festo. It delivers fast throughput with improved energy efficiency and, as a result, enables users to optimise their process times and reduce operating costs.

The EXCH handler is scalable up to 2.5m in the x-axis and 1.5m in the y-axis, which is more than double the working area of typical tripod handling systems, and provides machine builders and systems integrators with a reliable, high performing system for their machine. It can carry out full circular interpolation, for tasks such as cutting complex shapes or depositing a profiled bead of glue.

Its parallel kinematic system is extremely energy efficient. As the system features only a static motor on each axis, which both apply torque directly to the moving product; it can position larger payloads more quickly than standard Cartesian positioning systems where the motor and axis mass has to be added to the payload.
The gantry is available in two sizes, EXCH-40 and EXCH-60, which can reliably move payloads of 4kgs and 6kgs respectively whilst delivering an impressive up to 100 picks per minute. The system can be easily mounted vertically or horizontally, providing horizontal applications with fast positioning speeds of up to 5m/s, and high acceleration up to 50m/s2 and vertical applications with speeds of up to 4m/s, and acceleration up to 30m/s2. The gantry can also be simply coupled with an electric or pneumatic axis in the z dimension for a rotary / lifting module in 3D applications.

The system is exceptionally easy to set up and it can be ordered complete with a CMCA control cabinet which can control up to six axes. It is delivered as a ready-to-install, complete system, fully assembled and wired, in only three weeks.

The EXCH handler is ideal for applications such as high speed palletising, pick and place, laser and vinyl cutting, in end-of-line packaging and light assembly. Industries include packaged goods in the food and beverage industry and general assembly of car parts in the automotive industry.

Active temp sensors HVAC and Building Technology.

The new temperature sensors from E+E Elektronik are now also available with 0-10 V or 4-20 mA outputs. The active sensors extend the portfolio of the Austrian sensor specialist in the field of HVAC and building technology. The compact, innovative housing and mounting concept with protection class IP65 / NEMA 4 facilitates extremely simple and fast installation of the sensors.

The range includes duct mounted types, sensors for wall mounting indoors and outdoors, a strap-on sensor for mounting on ducts and pipes, and a version with remote probe. Special immersion wells with innovative mounting spring turn the duct versions into immersion sensors for temperature measurement in fluids.

The sensors offer outstanding accuracy and a wide temperature range. The measured values are available at a 0-10 V or 4-20 mA output. The factory scaling is freely selectable and can be subsequently changed by the user by means of an optional configuration kit and free configuration software.

The clever housing design offers a considerable advantage when it comes to installing the sensor. Thanks to the external fixing holes, the device can be mounted with closed cover, which keeps the electronics protected against construction site pollution.

The new temperature sensor series from E+E Elektronik rounds off their existing product range of transmitters for humidity, CO2 and air velocity, thereby offering an extensive sensor package for HVAC and building technology.

Optical test system.

Yokogawa has expanded its AQ2200 Series Multi-Application Test System (MATS) with a range of optical attenuation and switch modules for applications involving GI50 multimode optical fibre.

Multi-mode optical fibre has a much larger core diameter than single-mode fibre, which simplifies connections and allows the use of lower-cost electronics such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) which operate at the 850 nm and 1300 nm wavelength. It is ideally suited for communication over short distances, such as within a building or on a campus.

Because of its superior bandwidth compared with copper cables, GI50 multimode fibre is rapidly becoming the preferred worldwide communications medium for short-reach, large-capacity, high-speed transmission systems in applications such as data centres. As a result, there has been an increased demand for instruments to test associated equipment such as SP4/SR10 optical transceivers and IP routers and hubs, and the new additions to the AQ2200 Series have been developed specifically to address this market.

The AQ2200 Series is a modular optical test platform with a wide selection of modules to allow the optimal configuration of test solutions in the design and manufacture of optical components and network systems. The system is available with two different frame controller platforms with three or nine slots for connecting modules, allowing users to select the optimum configuration for the intended measurement application.

A single MATS frame, which is programmable and remote-controllable, can handle multiple applications simultaneously, allowing different users to control the modules with savings in cost. The fast response of the instrument makes it an ideal tool in a manufacturing environment.

Yokogawa offers a wide range of hot-swappable modules for the AQ2200 Series, including variable optical attenuators (with or without built-in power meters), high power and multi-channel power meters, high-stability laser sources and switches in a variety of channel counts.

Domed top column load cell.

High-contrast mono LCD touch displays with colour option.

Varitronix has announced the availability of a range of High-Contrast Mono LCD Touch Displays with the option of adding Colour Filters. The displays use Improved Black Nematic (IBN) technology to provide a very high contrast ratio of around 1000:1 with extremely low bleed-through of light around the edges of the ON segment characters and graphics. IBN is a Negative Mode Transmissive LCD technology for low to medium multiplex applications.

Colour filters can be customer-specified to provide areas of bright, coloured characters on a black background. As an alternative option to colour filters, tri-colour backlights can be specified to highlight the display status with differing colours.

IBN technology offers a stable optical performance and wide viewing cone over a typical operating temperature range of -30 to 85 deg C and typical drive conditions of 1/9 Duty, 1/4 Bias. The Varitronix range of High-Contrast Touch Displays are manufactured to very high quality standards, providing durability and long-life. The IBN technology is already widely used within the Automotive sector for dashboard and HVAC applications where clarity of information over a wide viewing cone is paramount. In-Chassis PROFIBUS® Interface at the price of a Gateway.

The convenience and functionality of an in-chassis PROFIBUS® interface is available at the cost of a gateway from ProSoft Technology. The PROFIBUS DPV1 Master and Slave modules for CompactLogix™ provides this and more.

The Master module integrates with RSLogix™ 5000 using a sample Add-On Instruction, which reduces its configuration time.

The Master module’s Autoscan feature helps reduce configuration and startup times by scanning the PROFIBUS network and uploading the slave devices’ addresses and configuration information so the user doesn’t have to manually input the information. The Master module also enables asset-management software to remotely configure, commission, maintain and diagnose your fieldbus devices over their entire lifecycle.

The Master module’s SD card allows the user to store configuration files, which can be used for disaster recovery.

Connector series for food and beverage industries.

The new Han® F+B connector series from Harting features a design that is optimised to meet the hygienic requirements of the food, packaging and beverage industries.

The new range has been developed specifically to withstand the ambient conditions encountered in the splash zone (Zone 2) as specified by the EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) guidelines. In particular, it meets the requirements for large radii and smooth surfaces free of spaces or gaps which might trap dirt or food particles and contaminate the plant with bacteria.

A polypropylene plastic coating is used which provides protection to IP level class IP69K. It is approved by the FDA (US Food & Drug Administration) and is resistant to ECOLAB certified cleaning materials and processes, which include high-pressure and steam cleaning using aggressive acid or alkaline cleaning agents.

The Han® F+B connector is offered with a choice of 25 different contact inserts for interfacing bus systems, signals and power contacts at currents of up to 40 A. For power transmission, contacts terminated by crimp, Quick Lock, axial screw and normal screw terminals are all available.

Digital gas detector!

The OLCT 10N from Oldham, is a digital detector designed for commercial or industrial use in ATEX zone 2 environments or areas without explosion hazard classifications.

Designed to detect explosive gases (CH4, H2, C3H8 and C4H10), toxic gases (CO, NO, NO2, H2S and NH3) or oxygen, the OLCT 10N now includes an infrared sensor for detecting CO2 in three different ranges: 0-5000 ppm, 0-5% vol. and 0-100% vol.

Associated with the MX43 controller, the OLCT 10N makes electrical installation easier with a fieldbus network that allows for up to 30 detectors to be connected on the same line!

Reducing communication costs for upstream oil & gas applications while ensuring highly reliable monitoring and control

Yokogawa has released an enhanced version of the STARDOM™ network-based control system. The new STARDOM version features enhancements that reduce communication costs and ensure highly reliable monitoring and control. These enhancements meet a variety of needs in upstream oil and gas development and production.
Development background
STARDOM network-based control systems consist of FCN/FCJ autonomous controllers and either a VDS or FAST/TOOLS SCADA server. FCN/FCJ controllers are ideal for the monitoring of oil and gas field installations, pipelines, and other widely distributed facilities that rely on satellites and other types of communications platforms for the transmission of data. In addition to eliminating communications delays and achieving high quality communications, the companies that operate such facilities are seeking to reduce communications costs by limiting the volume of data that needs to be transmitted.

1. Unsolicited response support
Personnel in central monitoring rooms rely on process data to monitor and control production facilities in the field. As all the process data are sent to the SCADA server at regular intervals, communications costs are high. To address this and other needs, the FCN/FCJ controllers now support the DNP3 unsolicited response function and thus are able to immediately transmit only the most essential data to the SCADA server in the central monitoring room. Without impacting the reliability of monitoring and control, this reduces the amount of data that needs to be transmitted and helps to hold down communication costs. DNP3 is an open communications protocol ideal for use with facilities that are distributed over a wide geographic area.
2. Expanded support of standards for gas well applications
Differential pressure meters are widely used to measure gas flow rates. Depending on the mechanism that is employed to create the pressure difference, a variety of formulas developed by organisations such as the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), American Gas Association (AGA), and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC) are used to calculate the gas flow rate. With this new STARDOM version, the FCN/FCJ controllers now support certain gas flow rate calculations based on the globally popular ISO5167 standard. The FCN/FCJ controllers already conform to the standards developed by the American Gas Association (AGA) that have been widely adopted in the Americas. With this added capability, the STARDOM controllers now support a greater variety of gas flow rate control applications.
3. Strengthened security measures
As the use of standard port numbers with a communication protocol leaves SCADA systems more vulnerable to unauthorised access, it is becoming a common security practice to restrict which port numbers can be used. Accordingly, Yokogawa has strengthened the communications function of its FCN/FCJ controllers to enable the selection of network port numbers based on the Modbus/TCP communication protocol, which is widely used in industrial networks. This functional enhancement makes it possible for users to configure their systems in accordance with their security policies.

High quality test leadsets and accessories.

Cliff Electronics is now supplying an extended range of test leads and accessories direct to end users via major distributors and electrical wholesalers nationwide.

Standard Test Leadsets manufactured by the company cover a very wide range designed for specific end users including Installation contractors, portable appliance testers (PAT), repair and calibration practitioners, PV and solar installers and are supplied in long-lasting vinyl storage pouches.

Their electrical test product range includes leads, probes, sockets, crocodile clips and accessories for OEMs, engineers and technicians and support a wide range of test, design, calibration, repair and installation applications. Cliff offers a very successful total design and manufacturing service for OEM test meter manufacturers including customised branding and labeling if required.

The latest introduction to the Cliff test product range is a new Crocodile Clip rated at 1kV at 20A for connecting test equipment to high voltage systems. The new crocodile clip can be supplied separately or combined with a standard or custom OEM Test Leadset. Cliff’s existing wide range of standard crocodile clips includes types for telecoms and data test applications, including BON and 2mm products.

Three phase utility grid simulator.

Intepro Systems has introduced the PAS-F Series of programmable three phase utility grid simulators. The PAS-F system combines utility grid simulation and regenerative bi-directional AC source that is capable of both sourcing and sinking the full current load from the device under test (DUT). With power levels ranging from 45kVA to 1.6MVA, the series is capable of testing the largest of dispersed energy inverters.

When testing dispersed energy products, such as PV inverters, energy storage systems and wind turbines, the traditional test set up requires a load bank in parallel with the DUT and AC source. The PAS-F system does not require the parallel load. Instead, full DUT current is sunk into the AC source and 92% of the power is regenerated back to the utility grid, saving energy and reducing system-cooling requirements.


The PAS-F system offers fully adjustable output voltages (up to 305 V line-to neutral, 528 V line-to-line) and frequency (40-70 Hz). It features embedded low-voltage-ride-through (LVRT) test windows to allow for simple programming of compliance routines, including the new 10% LVRT requirements. The DSP-based controller allows for independent phase angle, voltage and phase imbalance control to meet requirements, such as IEEE1547, where multi-phase inverters must be tested on an individual basis and all phases simultaneously. The PAS-F system can also be used as a reference AC source for use in UL1741, IEEE1547, BDEW (Germany) and CEI0-16 (Italy) compliance testing.

A new evaluation platform for MEMS and environmental sensors, created by linking the Cinterion® Concept Board by Gemalto to an STMicroelectronics NUCLEO expansion board has been introduced by Anglia Components.

Using source code supplied by Anglia, designers can request measurements such as temperature, humidity, pressure, co-ordinates and g-force from the on-board sensors using SMS communication or AT commands. The suite supports customers with the evaluation and design process by providing the tools and open source software required to facilitate further development using Java® as the design environment.

The Gemalto Cinterion Concept Board was specifically developed as an incubator to open up the creation of innovative Internet of Things M2M based systems to the huge and very innovative Java development community. The Board provides a simple environment that offers the developer everything that he or she needs to quickly transform exciting ideas into market ready M2M applications. The Board includes the powerful Cinterion M2M module offering global 2G and 3G cellular connectivity.

Anglia has harnessed the Concept Board to X-NUCLEO-IKS01A1, a motion MEMS and environmental sensor expansion board from STMicroelectronics. The board is designed around high performance STMicroelectronics accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, humidity, temperature and pressure sensors.

Anglia has created a live online demonstration of the concept. An introductory video introduces the main features of the board, and illustrates the simple steps involved in connecting the hardware, getting the software running and controlling the boards using an SMS interface.  The video also illustrates the main features of the Gemalto Developer Zone, and its SensorLogic cloud based enablement platform, each offering a wealth of resources to speed the developer to a fully working design. With its Expert Logger, Delphin Technology introduces a new generation of data loggers that combine the latest communication technology with advanced measurement technology. The device is being launched in three versions, capable of processing 16, 32 or 46 analog input channels. Up to 8 digital inputs/outputs and one SDI12 interface are also available depending on the version. The main areas of application include product testing, environmental measurement technology, laboratory data acquisition, research and development, and trials and testing.

All analog inputs are galvanically isolated from each other. A 24-bit A/D converter ensures fast, precision sampling rates of up to 50 measurements per second per channel. The devices are maintenance and noise free due to the absence of electromechanical components (such as relays) that are prone to wear and tear.

All Expert Loggers are equipped with internal 4 GB memories that can independently store up to 100 million measurement values with date and time stamps. pH/ORP measurement.

A scalable, integrated system that improves maintenance efficiency

The SensTation pH/ORP measurement system from Yokogawa, is a scalable and integrated solution that combines the unique capabilities of the SENCOM pH/ORP sensors and the SMARTDAC+ data acquisition and control system. This solution eliminates the need for a pH/ORP transmitter and allows users the choice of any of the paperless recorders in the SMARTDAC+ series, each of which can connect to up to 16 sensors. In addition to supporting a wide range of analytical and data control applications, this solution improves maintenance efficiency.

Development background
Liquid analysers are used in the oil, petrochemical, iron and steel, electric power, water supply, wastewater treatment, and many other industries. These analysers are necessary to control the quality of raw materials and products, monitor reactions, and manage water treatment. Conventional liquid analysers are composed of a sensor and a transmitter that converts the sensor's analogue signals into digital signals for transmission over communications networks and the real-time display of data.

Data acquisition systems are often used in plants to collect and log data from liquid analysers. In 2013, Yokogawa released the SENCOM series of pH/ORP sensors, which are able to process digital signals and store calibration data and other types of information in digital form. This eliminates the need for a transmitter and allows direct connections with PCs and other digital devices. SENCOM sensors come with a communication interface and custom-made pH/ORP display templates for use with the SMARTDAC+ recorders.

What's in a name?
SENCOM takes its name from the phrase "SENsors with COMmunication", which emphasises the data storage capability of these sensors. Yokogawa Electric Corporation and its subsidiary Yokogawa Europe B.V. The AT-7000-EUR Advanced Wire Tracer with new features and technologies that simplify wire tracing and breaker identification has been introduced by Beha-Amprobe® . The tracer, available in two different kits, combines a receiver and powerful transmitter to locate energized and de-energized wires, breakers, and fuses.

The AT-7000-EUR features the new Smart Sensor™ patented sensor array combined with an advanced signal processor that measures small changes in the detected signal multiple times per second for unmatched precision and ease of use for tracing energized wires in walls, floors, and ceilings. Wire orientation and direction, which are displayed on the large, dynamic LCD color display, are accurate within two inches (5 cm).

Variable speed drive solutions for furniture!

A leading furniture testing specialist is now among the increasing number of industrial companies benefitting from variable speed drive solutions from Emerson.

To meet these challenges, Advanced Furniture Testing developed specialised machines for tests that include chair back durability, drop impact and load ease, multi-task furniture, dual arm durability and universal cyclic testing.

For a brand new multi-axis chair testing machine, the company is now using the Control Techniques Unidrive M range of drives. The drive’s precise control and accuracy was identified as critical for a brand new machine designed to test chair strength and rigidity.

The machine is designed to complete multiple, repetitive cycles of pulling on the back of the item and pushing on its seat. The pull is completed using a motor that controls an electromechanical actuator, while the push on the seat again is completed using another electromechanical actuator that pushes a load on to the seat. Millions of cycles can be performed to replicate the sit, lean and recline process.

Advanced Furniture Testing ensures each test is performed to the highest level of accuracy and repeatability. The company’s machines use load cells to ‘close the loop’ between the machine and the product under test.

In practice, this means that Advanced Furniture Testing does not just trust a theoretical load applied with a pneumatic cylinder to a pre-set air pressure, for example. Nor does it apply a cyclic dead weight load that may oscillate wildly and apply more loading cycles. Instead, electromechanical actuator/servo systems are deployed similar to those used by industrial robots. This strategy helps to apply a load within two per cent accuracy, far exceeding BIFMA standards which require five per cent accuracy.

The Unidrive M700 drives used on the new machine control the motors, which in turn control the electromechanical actuators. Unidrive M700 offers comprehensive position feedback and high performance control of dynamic permanent magnet servo motors, as well as on-board Ethernet, which gives Advanced Furniture Testing more flexibility, remote programming and data logging.

The drive is paired with a Control Techniques MCi210 machine control module, which adds a powerful, second on-board microprocessor for high performance IEC 61131-3 based machine control.

Intelligent RFID transponder incorporates monitoring functions for sensor data

Harting has enhanced its RFID Embedded Transponder (ETB) with a range of extended functions including the ability to monitor and transmit sensor data. As a result, it becomes possible for an object or component that is equipped with an RFID transponder to determine and wirelessly transfer not only its own ID, but also its current status with the help of connected sensors. This supports the Internet of Things principle in which passive devices can communicate with one another.

The integrated UHF (ultra high frequency) technology embedded in the transponder performs, in effect, as a direct control system, and allows mobile parts that do not have their own constant energy supply to be monitored comprehensively.

This passive mode of operation, in which the system on the transponder side functions without an energy source, is a major advantage of UHF-based control systems. The system obtains its energy from the RFID reader device, and powers the RFID transponder via the transmitted radiation - which in Europe lies in the frequency band from 865 to 867 MHz. Communication between reader and transponder also takes place via these radio waves. The transponder can address external sensors and transmit data to the reading device over a range of up to 3 m.

The Ha-VIS RFID ETB 86v1 transponder is equipped with up to four digital inputs that can be securely read and evaluated with the help of an EPC Class 1 Gen 2 compatible RFID reader.

Energy innovation centre selects!

Autoscribe’s Matrix Gemini Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) has been selected for use in WMG’s Energy Innovation Centre. WMG is one of the world’s leading research and education centres, and is also one of the seven world class centres of industrial innovation that make up the High Value Manufacturing Catapult project. This was set up in order to accelerate new concepts through to commercial reality and in doing so provide a catalyst for the future growth and success of manufacturing in Britain.


The centre provides the facilities to undertake a wide programme of tests on battery technologies from cell to pack level for both private and commercial projects. The majority of work involves testing Li-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles and all-electric vehicles, although other battery technologies are tested. Matrix Gemini was chosen because of the flexibility of configuration, and all system changes and developments are being handled internally by WMG’s Energy Storage and Management Research team using the One Time™ Configuration Tools. Typical tests include: ageing tests, thermal testing and abuse and vibration testing, with results collated and returned to clients.

With around 2000 sample items in store and a few hundred in active testing, approximately 1TB of data is created each year and can be in many forms, such as proprietary databases, images and video. The test results are stored externally and Matrix Gemini is able to track metadata that points to the raw data so that test results can be tracked.

Siemens has expanded its portfolio of rugged network components with the Ruggedcom RSG920P – a high port density Ethernet switch designed to operate in harsh environments with widely varying climatic and environmental conditions.

Withstanding extreme temperature, vibration and shock the device offers high reliability for industrial applications such as transportation systems and oil and gas applications. With 20 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the Ruggedcom RSG920P is suitable for applications that require high bandwidths and is ready to accommodate future network expansions. Four SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable) slots provide flexibility in uplink distances and bandwidth options with support for Gigabit as well as Fast Ethernet fiber SFPs.

The small form factor of the Ruggedcom RSG920P provides the capacity of a 19” switch and allows deployment in space limited cabinets. Due to its small size, the switch can be mounted directly on a DIN-Rail. Storing application data, firmware and device configuration for commissioning and field maintenance is simple with the Micro SD card slot.

With 4 Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) interfaces supplying up to 120 watt (30 watt per port) of power, the Ruggedcom RSG920P can accommodate various PoE devices such as PTZ (pan–tilt–zoom) cameras, intercom devices, Wireless LAN Access Points and Bluetooth sensors. The Smart Power Management for PoE gives higher priority to the most important devices in a network when power demand exceeds supply.

The Ruggedcom RSG920P helps meet the growing demand for Ethernet in roadside and wayside cabinets by eliminating the need for multiple switches. Customers can reduce cabling costs and simplify camera, radio and peripheral device connectivity by supplying power and Ethernet over one cable.

The Ruggedcom RPS1300 is the companion power supply of the Ruggedcom RSG920P, capable of providing enough power for all 4 Power-over-Ethernet ports simultaneously, even when operating at 30 watt per port.
